LibGuides 2 Team Meeting - April 22, 2015

Exponential Growth: Using Springshare Web Tools to Open Up a World of Collabo...
RILINK began using Springshare's LibGuides in 2012 to build an organizational website and provide professional development to members on using LibGuides. Over time, RILINK expanded the use of LibGuides across member schools for collaboration and resource sharing. A timeline shows that between 2012-2015, RILINK provided training sessions and webinars to help members implement LibGuides and prepare for migrating content to the version 2 platform, which became available to all RILINK members in January 2016.
LibGuides @ Your Library
LibGuides are a user-friendly, web-based tool that combines all the advantages of wikis, blogs, and social networking in one package. Designed especially for libraries, they allow even techno-timid library staff to create their own web content and showcase library resources. Learn how Omaha Public Library staff has used this tool to create webpages on every possible subject, from genealogy to homelessness, without ever taking a programming class.

We took an evidence-based approach to design its guides based on iterative testing and data from Springshare and Google Analytics. I share what user data showed and how it led to a consistent look and feel.

With every person only a Google search away, its important for all professionals to develop an effective online presence in order to demonstrate their skills beyond the traditional resume. For colleagues, potential employers and future collaborators, your online presence provides an opportunity to take a closer look at your experience, view your portfolio and get to know you. Developing an digital identity that is true to who you are and manageable can be a challenge – having a strategy is key. This presentation will provide steps for creating an online identity, including improving your social media presence and developing an online portfolio. This presentation will provide ideas for both developing and refining your personal digital brand. Through exemplars and best practices, attendees will leave with tips and tools for creating your best online self.

Numerous studies exist on how and to what extent course instructors in higher education are embedding or directly teaching writing, learning and research skills in their courses (Cilliers, 2011; Crosthwaite et al., 2006; and Mager and Sproken-Smith, 2014). Yet, disparity within the literature demonstrates that there is no consistent approach to the scaffolded development of these necessary skills within courses, programs, disciplines, or across disciplines. Preliminary research has also revealed that professor communication of expected or required student skills is often limited or unclear (McGuinnes, 2006).
Through a collaborative research project at the University of Guelph, we employed a multidisciplinary and multi-skill approach to explore the intersection between professor articulation and student interpretation of academic skills. Through this research, we have identified that, in the teaching and learning in third year university courses, discrepancies exist
a. between the learning, writing and research skills professors expect students to possess and the skills students think they possess when they enter the course;
b. in professor articulation of skills they will teach in their course and which skills they expect students to develop outside of class time;
c. in the skills students seek to develop based on their interpretation of the course outline; and
d. in students’ ability to identify necessary skills before and after taking these courses.
Based on these findings, we recommend that a curriculum-based approach to understanding the skill development needs of students can assist in bridging the gap between professor expectations and student interpretations of skill requirements.
Throughout this research presentation, we will present an overview of our research project; present our key findings; offer initial interpretations on student understandings of course outlines; demonstrate the value of cross-unit and cross-departmental collaborations; and offer recommendations and potential areas for further research. An investigation into student use of LibGuides: do they want fries with that?...IL Group (CILIP Information Literacy Group)
This document summarizes a study conducted by Jo Keleher at CQUniversity Australia that investigated students' use of LibGuides. The study found that 69% of students surveyed had consulted LibGuides, with many finding the resources helpful for their research skills and learning. However, some students also provided negative feedback. While initial statistics on LibGuide usage suggested high use, the survey found that students struggled the most with understanding assignment tasks, developing search terms, and evaluating information critically. In conclusion, LibGuides were found to provide value to students' learning, but there is still room for improvement in the resources.Migration Debrief
The UMD Blackboard to Canvas Migration Team debriefed on their four phase process to migrate over 23,000 course spaces from Blackboard to Canvas. Phase 1 involved planning and needs analysis from December 2011 to February 2012. Phase 2 finalized migration strategies and timelines from June to July 2012. Phase 3 migrated all courses in phases based on terms from July 2012 to March 2013. Phase 4, currently in progress, addresses lingering issues and supports faculty rebuilding efforts from October 2012 to June 2013. Key lessons learned included allowing ample migration time, solid communication, phased migration, and ensuring ongoing support for faculty.

DISC 2015 has a plan to award excellent poster session submissions to encourage young scholars and their advisors.
Workshop and/or tutorial proposals are welcome. Contact DISC 2015 organizing committee for the details.
Publication
Through a separate peer-review, the papers presented or illustrated as a poster in DISC 2015 will be selected for internationally renowned (e.g., SSCI listed) journals.

Current Practices around RDM Training in Europe
This document summarizes current practices and issues around research data management (RDM) training in Europe. LibreUmbria, a migration romance
The LibreUmbria project aims to widely adopt the LibreOffice productivity suite across regional and local governments, schools, and authorities in the Umbria region of Italy. Financed by the Umbria region and managed by the Consorzio SIR Umbria consortium, the initial phase involved the Umbria region, SIR, local health authorities, and educational institutions. The project uses a five-part methodology focusing on team engagement, tasks, communications, training, and tools to transition users to LibreOffice through training, customized extensions, and community building. The ultimate goal is to create a LibreOffice user community across the different organizations.

Mobile first in a conservative company - UXLx 2014
Euroconsumers, a non-profit consumer rights organization, decided to adopt a mobile-first strategy for their website to prioritize mobile users. They partnered with an external UX consultant, Giles Colborne, to help with the process over 6 weeks through 3 iterations. The teams worked remotely and in person in multiple cities, creating prototypes with wireframes, user testing, and refinements. This resulted in a fully designed prototype for the Belgian website. The process helped gain business buy-in, user focus, and efficiency for future projects. Lessons included the value of a user-centered process, cross-team involvement, commitment from all parties, and the benefits of both remote and in-person work.

The library team used a user-centered approach and decision framework to prioritize and design the learning objects, which helped raise their profile as eLearning librarians. James Molloy presented on managing an e-learning project at University College Dublin (UCD) Library to develop reusable learning objects to support student learning. Due to restructuring, the library reduced face-to-face instruction and increased online learning objects, tutorials, videos and guides. The library strategic plan called for exploiting e-learning technologies through production and promotion. An e-learning team was formed to investigate opportunities, develop online supports for information skills, and increase knowledge of e-learning tools. The project aimed to provide scaffolded, engaging learning for students through theory and practice-based, customizable content and active discovery experiences.
