This presentation provides a description of the IPM project in Alabama that is based on technology convergence in the digital age. This presentation also discusses some of the major findings of the two-year insect survey project that demonstrated that sustainable agricultural practices in the long run can reduce insect outbreaks and need for corrective action. The presentation was delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America 2010, San Diego, CA.

Mankind is facing an enormous challenge of food insecurity. By the year 2050, the population of the world is projected to increase by 35% to a whopping 9 billion; and an almost doubling of global food production is needed to feed the planet. This additional food for humans and farm animals has to come from the existing land, through maximization of genetic potential and relatively quickly. This demand for unprecedented productivity in agriculture needs to be realized in the presence of growing challenges of climate change, shortsighted land-use practices and increasing cost of agriculture despite the rate of improved adoption of technology in crop breeding. Recent advances in our understanding of genes and genomes combined with development of novel tools in biotechnology will play a vital role in accelerating efforts in plant breeding. Genomics assisted breeding assists the breeders in precise selection to enhance the effectivity and enhancement of the precise selection to develop a new cultivars.

Covance was approached by a European company producing a standard herbicide for maize who had been asked by the regulator to conduct a study to provide data to refine the small mammal risk assessment. The concern was not only the residue on the maize, but also on the weeds that the herbicide targeted at the time of application.

The potential for crop wild relatives (CWR) to contribute to crop improvement is growing due to improvements in information on species and their diversity, advancements in breeding tools, and the growing need for exotic genetic diversity to address compounding agronomic challenges. As wild plants, CWR are subject to a myriad of human caused threats to natural ecosystems, and their representation ex situ is often far from comprehensive. Ex situ conservation of many of these wild plants is also technically challenging, particularly in an environment of insufficient resources. Enhancing conservation, availability, and access to CWR requires a spectrum of action spanning basic and applied research on wild species to inform on-the-ground collecting, ex situ maintenance, and germplasm utilization. The development of effective information channels and productive partnerships between diverse organizations are essential to the success of these actions. Here we report on a spectrum of CWR activities involving broad partnerships, at three levels: a) the collaborative compilation and distribution on over 5 million occurrence data records on the CWR of major food crops, b) the analysis of conservation concerns and genetic resources potential of the CWR of potato, sweetpotato, and pigeonpea, and c) ongoing efforts to map the diversity and conservation concerns for CWR in the USA. Although differing in scales and depth of collaborations, the success of these initiatives are largely due to commonalities in research orientation, e.g., inclusiveness, offering clear incentives for involvement, and service providing to the crop science community.

The crop wild relatives of potato have been largely and successfully used in breeding to acquire agronomical attributes that can help the cultivated potato to be more resistant against pest, diseases and extreme environmental conditions. Assessing the representativeness of these species in genebanks, is a fundamental step to secure these genetic resources for plant breeding and future availability of this crop.

Next steps It now takes 27 minutes to verify 950,000 records, 177million would be 83 hours (3 ½ days) Identify terrestrial plant species and separate them from sea species Use a georreferencing algorithm to: Correct wrong references Incorporate new location data to those with NULLlat,lon Interpret 2nd & 3rd-level administrative boundaries and use them too Implement environmental cross-checking (outliers)

Conclusions A coordinate can tell us a lot, and answer a number of interesting research questions, solve a lot of problems Agricultural world sadly behind the mainstream biodiversity world Data not online, not available Databases not connected Quality of coordinate data is critical: We need the concept of precision included We need fields such as location descriptions, and administrative 2nd and 3rd level descriptions for georeferencing We need effective two way communications for verifying, correcting and assigning coordinates from nodes to indexes and vice-versa Economy of scale
