CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
In these days, smartphones are really important. People start to ran away from computer
such as (Laptops and PCs) to do most of their work on their smartphones. You can write a
document and print it out using your smartphone, also you can keep in touch with your friends
and family using the social apps on your smartphone. Also you can take an amazing picture with
your smartphone camera. If you are a developer, now you can write your code with your
smartphone. So we can say that in these days, you can do almost anything with your smartphone.
There are two smartphones operating systems in the market Android and iOS, which I’m going
to do my study about those two.
Android started in November 5, 2007. And it’s continually developed by Google Inc. and
the Open Handset Alliance. Android is a free open source operating system, and until todays
Android has a 14 versions, which is as listed below:
# Version Name Release Date # Version Name Release Date
1 Alpha September 23, 2008 8 Honeycomb February 22, 2011
2 Beta February 9, 2009 9 Ice Cream Sandwich October 18, 2011
3 Cupcake April 27, 2009 10 Jelly Bean July 9, 2012
4 Donut September 15, 2009 11 KitKat October 31, 2013
5 Eclair October 26, 2009 12 Lollipop November 12, 2014
6 Froyo May 20, 2010 13 Marshmallow October 5, 2015
7 Gingerbread December 6, 2010 14 Nougat August 22, 2016

iOS started in March 6, 2008. And it’s developed by Apple Inc. This operating system is
only exclusive to Apple smartphone, and until now there is 7 major versions as listed below:
# Version Name Release Date # Version Name Release Date
1 iOS 4 June 22, 2010 5 iOS 8 Sept. 17, 2014
2 iOS 5 Oct. 12, 2011 6 iOS 9 Sept. 16, 2015
3 iOS 6 Sept. 19, 2012 7 iOS 10 September 13, 2016
4 iOS 7 Sept. 18, 2013
Both of those two operating systems are great, but each one of them has features that the
other doesn’t have. So in this research I’m going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages
of both of those smartphone operating system.
1.1.Statement of The Problem
Mostly people think that iOS is the best operating system for smartphone, while this not
100% true. iOS has a lot of features that makes it unique operating system, but defiantly not
the best. Because every operating system has its own flavor and own features, so maybe you
like iOS and maybe I don’t. It depends on our needs and life style. Also people always looks
for something that easy to use and stylish, but they don’t look into the specifications that they
need. In other words, most of the people who buys smartphones they don’t use all of the
smartphone features. Regarding to a study that has been made by Sean Poulter (2015) [6] “92
percent don’t use all of the features on their phone, with 30 percent admitting they aren’t
even close to using everything their phone is capable of”.
6

Android has a lot of features too, and it’s a unique operating system, since it can be
customized by developers and users depending on their needs, and it can be run on a lot of
devices. The loveliest thing about Android is the Android operating system is a free open
source, so anyone with a good knowledge can develop it. It started to be a smart phone
operating system but after while it turns to be used in a lot of deferent devices such as TVs,
cars head units, smart refrigerators and many more. But since it’s open source based system,
sometimes when you need to do something or when you ran into a problem, you may need an
expert to help you, or you need to figure it out yourself.
1.2. Purpose of This Research
The research is intending to explain the advantages in both of the operating systems and
their disadvantages, so people can know the different between these operating systems, and
to help them what to choose in the future.
1.3. Significance of The Research
This research goal is to prove that the Android operating system is not bad as many
people think, and to put each of those two famous operating system in perspective. So the
smartphones buyers, can have better understanding and having the ability to assess their
smartphones needs. Instead of just wasting money on smartphones that we're not going to use
most of its features.

LITERATURE REVIEW
The studies in this chapter that has been reviewed, is related to this research in strong
way. These studies have been done by highly expert scientists, so they’re results is very
considered in this research.
2.1. Studies
There is a study that has been done by Asokan (2013) discussing the advantages of
Android and iOS, specially focused on how those two operating systems handle browsing
webpages that use jQuery via their original web browsers. Also jQuery is a programing language
that help websites to be loaded faster on the browsers. So the researcher made an experiment
between those two operating systems by browsing some websites to check which one is faster.
The researcher found that iOS is faster in loading websites with 18.8 bytes/Sec than Android.
Study by Sheikh, Ganai, Malik and Dar (2013) comparing 2 smartphones operating
systems, Android and IOS. The study bases were on the platform, performance and the growth in
the smartphones market. The researchers analyzed the platforms of each operating system, and
they found all of those two systems each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It depends
mostly on the user’s needs whether they need an open source system without any restrictions or
not. Also the in the comparison of market growth of these two systems in this period (2010 -
2012) it seems to be that Android is changing in positive was every year with a percent of
104.1%.
8

Another study by Sharma, Beniwal and Arpita (2013) about the different mobile
technology and the difference between Android and iOS. The study explain that Android vendors
is handled by (Open Handset Alliance) while iOS’s vendor is (Apple). And for Android the
officially programing language that has been used is Java, while iOS mostly use Objective-C.
Also they’ve mentioned that the key to success in the phone market depends on the software
developers who is creating mobile apps that will enable the ecosystems which will allow access
to content, services and applications across many devices.
The goal of the study that has been done by Singla and Mendiratta (2014) is discussing
Android and iOS security and the way of how those operating systems will handle the security of
their applications as well. They mention that the security of any system is not a responsibility of
the developers only, it’s also responsibility of the users as well. Because users have different
needs of applications, so they only have the ability to install specific application or not. So users
must check if this app is safe or not. On the other hand, the applications stores should only allow
secured application to be published by verifying the application signatures and certificates.
A new study by Divya and KrishnaKumar (2016) which prove that Android operating
system is the most powerful system. Android can be run on computers, smartphones, tablets, TV,
refrigerators, cars head units and many more. While iOS can be run on iPhone, iPad and iPad
touch. Researchers said that Android it can be used as an educational tool, since it’s an open
source operating system. Also the market share for Android is about 48.8% while iOS is 17.2%.

CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
After going through 5 studies that has been done by other researchers, and after analyzing
the answers that I got from the survey. We can see that the previous studies show that each one
of those two operating systems has its own advantages and disadvantages. Android has a major
advantage which is it’s an open source, so anyone can develop it. Also it’s a customizable
system, users can customize it as they want, and it’s a multitasking operating system, you can do
multiple things at once. For the security it’s pretty good secured operating system. iOS has great
features too, it’s more stable than Android. Easy to use and well organized operating system, also
it’s pretty good secured system more than Android, since it’s not an open source system.
5.1. Discussion
The results of the survey were predictable actually, 60 percent of the users was using
Android which confirm the previous studies that says Android is the most popular smartphone
operating system. And then we have 50% users who bought their smartphone and knew about
most of its features, while the other 50% some of them knew a little bit about their smartphone
features and some of them just bought because it’s famous. Also in case of using most of the
smartphone features I found out that there is a small present about 20% users who doesn’t use
most of their smartphone features.
About 50% users say that Android is the most easier smartphone operating system in case
of use. Actually it does make since, Android has the ability to do single things in different way. I
mean you can for example send a text message using different apps. So you have many ways to
do one thing. iOS mostly doesn’t have this features, for example if you want to change the
17
Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved
ringtone from the default one to the one that you want, you need a special complicated way to do
it.
In the matter of Android operating system, I found that 80% users knew that Android can
be customized. So in my opinion at least 95% present should know about it, because it’s been a
long time since Android lunched and this long time should be fear enough for users to know
about this thing. Also it seems to be that many people think that Android can run not only on the
phone, but on Smart TV's as well. While a little percent knew that Android can be run on
different device (Car head units and Robots etc..). So this is actually confirming that many
people are just buying their smartphone without knowing about its own features and capabilities.
Regarding security, 65% users believe that iOS is very secured unlike Android, and 95%
users says that the security of the smartphone it does not depend on the operating system only, it
depends on the users also. So the percentage doesn’t make sense in my opinion. Because people
have wrong idea about Android, which is Android is not that secured, because they used to hear
that Apple Inc. take a strong action in the matter of their operating system. But the real thing is if
we took both those systems and test their security with their default apps and settings, we will
find both of them are secured. So the users’ choices to install this app or not is what makes the
system weak or not. And you can make Android strongly secured with some modifications since
it’s build based on Linux, and most of the banks and huge company in the world depends on
Linux.
Finally, 55% users think that Android is better than iOS overall. I agree with them
actually, I’ve used both of those operating systems and overall Android is always proving itself
with new technology and improvement in such a short time, unlike iOS which took long time to
catch up with Android features. For example, (Alternate Keyboards) this features Android has it
18
Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved
since the day its lunched, unlike iOS this features have been added to iOS from couple of years
ago. Also the removable storage (SD Cards) which is until today iOS doesn’t have this feature.
So until today there is no feature that iOS has and Android doesn’t have, all of the iOS features
are exist in Android.
5.2. Recommendations to The Study People
My recommendation to the people who are going to buy a smartphone in the future is to
go through the smartphone specification and asses their needs. If you need an open source
system where you can do whatever you want, and have the latest features with affordable price
then you should go with Android smartphones. If you want a smartphone that is almost ready to
use and you don’t want to configure anything or trying latest features, then you should go with
iOS.
3.3. Recommendations to Other Researchers
My recommendation to other researchers is choose their sample carefully, because I
made a mistake with the sample. Which is I should choose 10 users using Android and 10 users
using iOS to make sure that your results will be 100% accurate, but suddenly I didn’t pay
attention to this matter until the results of the survey came up.

  • 4. 4 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION In these days, smartphones are really important. People start to ran away from computer such as (Laptops and PCs) to do most of their work on their smartphones. You can write a document and print it out using your smartphone, also you can keep in touch with your friends and family using the social apps on your smartphone. Also you can take an amazing picture with your smartphone camera. If you are a developer, now you can write your code with your smartphone. So we can say that in these days, you can do almost anything with your smartphone. There are two smartphones operating systems in the market Android and iOS, which I’m going to do my study about those two. Android started in November 5, 2007. And it’s continually developed by Google Inc. and the Open Handset Alliance. Android is a free open source operating system, and until todays Android has a 14 versions, which is as listed below: # Version Name Release Date # Version Name Release Date 1 Alpha September 23, 2008 8 Honeycomb February 22, 2011 2 Beta February 9, 2009 9 Ice Cream Sandwich October 18, 2011 3 Cupcake April 27, 2009 10 Jelly Bean July 9, 2012 4 Donut September 15, 2009 11 KitKat October 31, 2013 5 Eclair October 26, 2009 12 Lollipop November 12, 2014 6 Froyo May 20, 2010 13 Marshmallow October 5, 2015 7 Gingerbread December 6, 2010 14 Nougat August 22, 2016
  • 5. 5 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved iOS started in March 6, 2008. And it’s developed by Apple Inc. This operating system is only exclusive to Apple smartphone, and until now there is 7 major versions as listed below: # Version Name Release Date # Version Name Release Date 1 iOS 4 June 22, 2010 5 iOS 8 Sept. 17, 2014 2 iOS 5 Oct. 12, 2011 6 iOS 9 Sept. 16, 2015 3 iOS 6 Sept. 19, 2012 7 iOS 10 September 13, 2016 4 iOS 7 Sept. 18, 2013 Both of those two operating systems are great, but each one of them has features that the other doesn’t have. So in this research I’m going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of both of those smartphone operating system. 1.1.Statement of The Problem Mostly people think that iOS is the best operating system for smartphone, while this not 100% true. iOS has a lot of features that makes it unique operating system, but defiantly not the best. Because every operating system has its own flavor and own features, so maybe you like iOS and maybe I don’t. It depends on our needs and life style. Also people always looks for something that easy to use and stylish, but they don’t look into the specifications that they need. In other words, most of the people who buys smartphones they don’t use all of the smartphone features. Regarding to a study that has been made by Sean Poulter (2015) [6] “92 percent don’t use all of the features on their phone, with 30 percent admitting they aren’t even close to using everything their phone is capable of”.
  • 6. 6 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved Android has a lot of features too, and it’s a unique operating system, since it can be customized by developers and users depending on their needs, and it can be run on a lot of devices. The loveliest thing about Android is the Android operating system is a free open source, so anyone with a good knowledge can develop it. It started to be a smart phone operating system but after while it turns to be used in a lot of deferent devices such as TVs, cars head units, smart refrigerators and many more. But since it’s open source based system, sometimes when you need to do something or when you ran into a problem, you may need an expert to help you, or you need to figure it out yourself. 1.2. Purpose of This Research The research is intending to explain the advantages in both of the operating systems and their disadvantages, so people can know the different between these operating systems, and to help them what to choose in the future. 1.3. Significance of The Research This research goal is to prove that the Android operating system is not bad as many people think, and to put each of those two famous operating system in perspective. So the smartphones buyers, can have better understanding and having the ability to assess their smartphones needs. Instead of just wasting money on smartphones that we're not going to use most of its features.
  • 7. 7 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW The studies in this chapter that has been reviewed, is related to this research in strong way. These studies have been done by highly expert scientists, so they’re results is very considered in this research. 2.1. Studies There is a study that has been done by Asokan (2013) discussing the advantages of Android and iOS, specially focused on how those two operating systems handle browsing webpages that use jQuery via their original web browsers. Also jQuery is a programing language that help websites to be loaded faster on the browsers. So the researcher made an experiment between those two operating systems by browsing some websites to check which one is faster. The researcher found that iOS is faster in loading websites with 18.8 bytes/Sec than Android. Study by Sheikh, Ganai, Malik and Dar (2013) comparing 2 smartphones operating systems, Android and IOS. The study bases were on the platform, performance and the growth in the smartphones market. The researchers analyzed the platforms of each operating system, and they found all of those two systems each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It depends mostly on the user’s needs whether they need an open source system without any restrictions or not. Also the in the comparison of market growth of these two systems in this period (2010 - 2012) it seems to be that Android is changing in positive was every year with a percent of 104.1%.
  • 8. 8 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved Another study by Sharma, Beniwal and Arpita (2013) about the different mobile technology and the difference between Android and iOS. The study explain that Android vendors is handled by (Open Handset Alliance) while iOS’s vendor is (Apple). And for Android the officially programing language that has been used is Java, while iOS mostly use Objective-C. Also they’ve mentioned that the key to success in the phone market depends on the software developers who is creating mobile apps that will enable the ecosystems which will allow access to content, services and applications across many devices. The goal of the study that has been done by Singla and Mendiratta (2014) is discussing Android and iOS security and the way of how those operating systems will handle the security of their applications as well. They mention that the security of any system is not a responsibility of the developers only, it’s also responsibility of the users as well. Because users have different needs of applications, so they only have the ability to install specific application or not. So users must check if this app is safe or not. On the other hand, the applications stores should only allow secured application to be published by verifying the application signatures and certificates. A new study by Divya and KrishnaKumar (2016) which prove that Android operating system is the most powerful system. Android can be run on computers, smartphones, tablets, TV, refrigerators, cars head units and many more. While iOS can be run on iPhone, iPad and iPad touch. Researchers said that Android it can be used as an educational tool, since it’s an open source operating system. Also the market share for Android is about 48.8% while iOS is 17.2%.
  • 9. 9 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY 3.1. Research Problem This research comparing the most two famous smartphones operating systems (Android and iOS), to correct some wrong ideas that people have about those two operating systems. Also to investigate whether users of smartphones are using most of their phone features or not, which will affect their buying decision in the future. 3.2. Research Questions - Which smartphone operating system is the best? - Do smartphone users know their smartphone operating system features well and use it? - Do they know the difference between the most famous smartphones operating systems in the market? 3.3. Population and sampling The sample will be focused on any person who is using smartphones in Saudi Arabia with an age starts from 15 to 35+. The type of the sample will be randomly, Also the number of sample will be 20 people only no more than that because it’s small study. 3.4. Instrumentation For this study I’m going to collect my data using survey method So I’m going to test the smartphones users’ knowledge about the smartphones operating systems, and to get the required information that will help this study to approve its points.

Preferred Smartphone Operating System In the last question of the survey, I found that 11 persons sees Android as a better smartphone operating system rather than iOS, while 9 persons sees iOS as a better smartphone operating system rather than Android.
  • 16. 16 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved CHAPTER 5 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS After going through 5 studies that has been done by other researchers, and after analyzing the answers that I got from the survey. We can see that the previous studies show that each one of those two operating systems has its own advantages and disadvantages. Android has a major advantage which is it’s an open source, so anyone can develop it. Also it’s a customizable system, users can customize it as they want, and it’s a multitasking operating system, you can do multiple things at once. For the security it’s pretty good secured operating system. iOS has great features too, it’s more stable than Android. Easy to use and well organized operating system, also it’s pretty good secured system more than Android, since it’s not an open source system. 5.1. Discussion The results of the survey were predictable actually, 60 percent of the users was using Android which confirm the previous studies that says Android is the most popular smartphone operating system. And then we have 50% users who bought their smartphone and knew about most of its features, while the other 50% some of them knew a little bit about their smartphone features and some of them just bought because it’s famous. Also in case of using most of the smartphone features I found out that there is a small present about 20% users who doesn’t use most of their smartphone features. About 50% users say that Android is the most easier smartphone operating system in case of use. Actually it does make since, Android has the ability to do single things in different way. I mean you can for example send a text message using different apps. So you have many ways to do one thing. iOS mostly doesn’t have this features, for example if you want to change the
  • 17. 17 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved ringtone from the default one to the one that you want, you need a special complicated way to do it. In the matter of Android operating system, I found that 80% users knew that Android can be customized. So in my opinion at least 95% present should know about it, because it’s been a long time since Android lunched and this long time should be fear enough for users to know about this thing. Also it seems to be that many people think that Android can run not only on the phone, but on Smart TV's as well. While a little percent knew that Android can be run on different device (Car head units and Robots etc..). So this is actually confirming that many people are just buying their smartphone without knowing about its own features and capabilities. Regarding security, 65% users believe that iOS is very secured unlike Android, and 95% users says that the security of the smartphone it does not depend on the operating system only, it depends on the users also. So the percentage doesn’t make sense in my opinion. Because people have wrong idea about Android, which is Android is not that secured, because they used to hear that Apple Inc. take a strong action in the matter of their operating system. But the real thing is if we took both those systems and test their security with their default apps and settings, we will find both of them are secured. So the users’ choices to install this app or not is what makes the system weak or not. And you can make Android strongly secured with some modifications since it’s build based on Linux, and most of the banks and huge company in the world depends on Linux. Finally, 55% users think that Android is better than iOS overall. I agree with them actually, I’ve used both of those operating systems and overall Android is always proving itself with new technology and improvement in such a short time, unlike iOS which took long time to catch up with Android features. For example, (Alternate Keyboards) this features Android has it
  • 18. 18 Copyright © 2017 Abdullateif Abdullkareim All Rights Reserved since the day its lunched, unlike iOS this features have been added to iOS from couple of years ago. Also the removable storage (SD Cards) which is until today iOS doesn’t have this feature. So until today there is no feature that iOS has and Android doesn’t have, all of the iOS features are exist in Android. 5.2. Recommendations to The Study People My recommendation to the people who are going to buy a smartphone in the future is to go through the smartphone specification and asses their needs. If you need an open source system where you can do whatever you want, and have the latest features with affordable price then you should go with Android smartphones. If you want a smartphone that is almost ready to use and you don’t want to configure anything or trying latest features, then you should go with iOS. 3.3. Recommendations to Other Researchers My recommendation to other researchers is choose their sample carefully, because I made a mistake with the sample. Which is I should choose 10 users using Android and 10 users using iOS to make sure that your results will be 100% accurate, but suddenly I didn’t pay attention to this matter until the results of the survey came up.
