This document describes the development of an Android app called the Miwok Language App. The app aims to help preserve Miwok, an endangered language spoken in California, by providing basic Miwok words, their English translations, audio recordings of the words, and images. Developing such an app could help with broader efforts to preserve endangered languages in India too. Key challenges in developing the app included lack of resources for the little-spoken Miwok language and creating audio recordings of the words. The app will feature sections for numbers, colors, family members, and phrases in both Miwok and English.

2. ABSTRACT
Miwok is an one of the highly endangered language spoken in California. So we want to develop an app for
the preservation of the Miwok language as in today’s world almost everyone has Smartphone and using
Smartphone we can teach people to learn and speak Miwok language , at their own pace and their
environment even without Internet . Miwok app is Android App which consists of basic Miwok words and
its English translation in addition with graphic icons and voice demo for its correct pronunciation.
By developing such application for the endangered languages, we can even give our help in the government
of India’s initiative for the preservation and the protection of the endangered languages of India(languages
like Handuri, Bellari etc).
This App is available free of cost and will always will be and help speakers of these endangered languages to
help spreading their language to the young speakers of the community ,with ease and using easy-to-
available technology.

4. Introduction
Miwok is a Penutian language of California. There are seven dialects of Miwok which are so distinct
from one another that most linguists consider them to be multiple languages, but since three of them
are no longer spoken and the other four are spoken by fewer than a dozen elders apiece, they are
usually discussed together. The Miwok languages are highly endangered, but some young Miwoks are
working to learn their ancestral tongues again.

Android Studio:Android Studio is the official Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
for Android app development, based on IntelliJIDEA.
VOICE RECORDER:Voice Recorder is free, full-featured, beautifully designed and easy to use
audio recording app for android.
ANDROID SMARTPHONE:In a nutshell, an Android phone is a powerful, high-tech
smartphone that runs on the Android operating system (OS) developed by Google and is used by a
variety of mobile phone manufacturers.
