Andrei Tarkovsky was a Russian filmmaker known for his experimental narrative techniques and theories of "sculpting in time" through the use of extremely long takes, slow camera pans, and very few cuts in his seven feature films from 1962 to 1986. Common motifs in Tarkovsky's films included running water, mirrors, reflections, and levitation, and he believed rapid editing detracted from immersive storytelling, instead favoring the expression of time through rhythmic long shots.
