The Romans created murals using small pieces of colored glass, stone, and other materials in mosaics. Unlike other times, Roman murals were primarily created inside buildings rather than on external walls. To make a mural, artists would design a piece of art, enlarge the outline by drawing it on square tiles, and use mortar to piece the tiles together, which was a long and laborious process without modern resources. Roman murals differed from other murals of the time in that they typically depicted everyday Roman life rather than focusing on religion and historical events.
