“When we build, let us think that we build
for ever….
….as we lay stone on stone,
….those stones will be held sacred
because our hands have touched them.”

5. If Walls Could Talk

Is non-profit film production

writes and produces short
documentary films about
unremembered and omitted
stories delving into the
history and cultural aspect
of bygone Derbyshire.
6. Lost Histories was set up to encourage and promote an
appreciation and understanding of art and heritage

8. If Walls Could Talk
Research:
I research each documentary
on subjects which I’ve read
about and interest me.
I research a subject widely,
after which I narrow the subject
further down and focus on a
particular story, which I
document using photography
and moving image.
9. If Walls Could Talk
Time scales:
From choosing a subject
to eventually shooting it
would take about one
year. I work on it during
my free time, always
shooting in an
aesthetically inspired,
quirk filled and touchingly
realistic manner.
10. If Walls Could Talk
Walls Could Talk project:
"If Walls Could Talk” tells the
stories of dry stone walls in
Derbyshire; how, why and
where they were built and
exploring how these walls can
communicate factually the
quirky tales of what are hidden
inside and beyond.
11. If Walls Could Talk
Co-operation:
With the co-operation of The
National Stone Centre,
Derbyshire branch of National
Dry stone Walling Association
of Great Britain and together
with a highly able, dedicated
and same-minded production
team, we have been able to
finish the documentary and
that runs into 35 minutes.
12. If Walls Could Talk
From realisation to finish:
This project was accomplished
over a two year period, which
included copious amounts of
walking and research. It was
shot over six weekends ahead
of the production time table.
13. If Walls Could Talk
Total footage:
In total, one hundred hours
of completed footage was
shot during the 6 weekends
which include drone and
steady cam footage. Also,
over 20 interviews were
conducted with professional
dry stone wallers and
students learning the trade.
14. If Walls Could Talk
The documentary is highly visual, letting the story and history
of dry stone walling unfold using drone footage and steady
cam work. This also showcases beautiful imagery of
Derbyshire landscape.
