It consisted of city-states like Athens and Sparta that developed their own governments, either oligarchies or democracies. Ancient Greek culture included philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and competitive events like the Olympics featuring boxing, wrestling, chariot and foot races. Major gods in Greek mythology included Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, and mythology played a role in Ancient Greek religion and rituals like animal sacrifices. Greece experienced important historical periods and conflicts, such as the Greco-Persian Wars including the battles of Marathon and Thermopylae.
