should be the head of the marriage. Torvald in the play issues
decrees and even gets condescending to his wife, Nora. The play
depicts Nora as having a secret of a loan that she had borrowed
to save her husband. She hides this secret from her husband
would not like the fact that it was Nora who had saved him.
Torvald was a male chauvinist and did not believe that a woman
was above him furthermore, that a woman would keep him.
Comment by Rachel D Heicher: Make sure that your topic
sentence reflects the main idea of the entire paragraph.
Nora is faced with problems since she must work hard to
pay the loan. The reason for her commitment to repaying the
loan is because it was illegal for a woman to borrow a loan
without her husband's consent. Because Nora is hiding a secret
and also that Torvald's attitude towards women Nora becomes
vulnerable to blackmail. Krogstad is the individual who
blackmails Nora in the play. Comment by Rachel D Heicher:
This paragraph just gives plot summary. It doesn’t seem to
advance your argument about the play in any way.
Nora, Dr. Rank, and Torvald are convinced that a parent has
the duty to be, honest and to be upstanding. They believe that
whatever a parent does is passed on to his or her children. In
Dr. Rank's case, he shares that due to his father's misdeeds he is
suffering from a virus. He says that his father involved himself
with a lot of affairs. Torvald gives the idea that the parents
determine the moral behavior of the child. The play also
3. suggests that children are also obligated to protect their parents.
Nora, however, ignores this after she chooses her husband over
her sick father. Mrs. Linde, on the other hand, gives up on
Krogstad to be with a richer man so that she can support her
mother. Comment by Rachel D Heicher: How is this related to
the thesis of your essay?
In the play appearances are misleading tactics which are
used to mask the reality of the play's characters and situations.
The first impression the audience gets of Nora, Torvald and
Krogstad are eventually changed. Nora for example at the
beginning of the play seems to a foolish girl, but as the play
progresses, she turns out to be brilliant. Torvald, at first, seems
strong, but as the play progresses, he turns out to be cowardly.
The play, therefore, maximizes on the revolving identity
confusion of the characters (Ibsen & Worall, 2008).
The Christmas tree in the play which is a decorative object in
the play symbolizes Nora's position in her household. It shows
Nora as someone who is good to look at and adds charm to the
house. New Year's Day, on the other hand, symbolizes the
beginning of new life for Nora and Torvald. This because they
begin different periods of their lives and personalities.
The major conflict in the play is Nora's struggle with
Krogstad, who threatens to tell her husband about her loan and
her past crimes. This, in turn, pushes Norah to start her journey
of self-discovery and is the main reason behind the plays
dramatic suspense. Nora's primary problem is her husband's
selfishness and oppressive behavior and of the society that he
represents.
In the play, Ibsen has used Motif to spice up the play
further. The motif is seen in Nora's definition of freedom. The
understanding that Nora has on the meaning of definition is
seen all around the play. In the beginning, she has the notion
that she will achieve freedom after she has repaid the loan.
After she is blackmailed, she thinks about her relationship with
Torvald and analyzes whether she is happy living under his
rules and dictatorship. At the end of the play, Nora seeks to find
4. a whole new meaning of freedom. She denounces her domestic
obligations to pursue her personal ambitions and beliefs. Nora
presents the audience with a sympathetic yet fully dimensional
take. She does this on the people who revolve around her and
Helmer. Dr. Rank is seen to be sweet and charming in a way
that makes him the favorite guest in Nora’s home. Nora’s
childhood friend Christine seems to portray a character of being
smart and appealing which makes her seem even grounded. She
is grounded in such a way that Nora will never be. Krogstad, on
the other hand, is the play’s villain. This is because he is
responsible in blackmailing Nora. Watching the play, Krogstd
seems to be more of a sad person that a master schemer.
Ibsen's play is very enticing and with the use of all the
items discussed above he has managed to make the play very
fun. Many of the twist and turns depend on the letters. Writing
and reading of letters which have the function within the play as
a subtext that reveals the unpleasant nature of Torvald. The play
is a masterpiece that portrays the tragic hypocrisy of the
Victorian marriage. The play captures its audience in a manner
that ensures that the audience can stay in suspense and to want
to know what will happen next.
