- 2. Many different angles – low, high shots. This shows the action from different points making it more effective. Close ups of the characters face – shows the audience the emotion, the scared looks on their faces.
- 3. Jump cuts of action makes the audience feel excited and exhilarated Black and white editing shown right at the beginning – assume it’s from CCTV, shows they’re being watched. Slow motion of man in mask waving a machete – sense of danger and very creepy.
- 4. Sirens – signal that there’s danger. Dialogue of the characters – ‘remember all the good the purge does’ said at the end of all the fighting and action, makes the viewer question how it’s good. Echo of man saying ‘just drive’, shows urgency. American National Anthem played – American tradition, everyone takes part.
- 5. Masks question the people’s identity – they connote danger and fear, when the man and woman see them they become frightened. The rich people at the end wear formal, smart clothing showing higher status and wealth, they’re making a bid on the people. The knives, machetes and other weapons show the audience the threatening feeling. The main character being attacked look very normal and wear plain clothing – unlike the attackers who wear masks or costumes, etc. shows victims vulnerability.
- 6. Flash cut when counting down at the beginning – makes the audience want to know what it’s counting down to. Title of film at the beginning – sequel to first Purge, makes the audience want to see it; the first Purge was popular and grossed to $64,473,115. The title is also shown at the end, makes the audience remember the name because it’s the last thing they see. Same with the release date, shown in the middle and at the end, so it’s easier for the audience to remember it.
