Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant
Sometimes, the people around a man force him to give up his freedom by giving in to what the
audience expects. The person wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation
high. In the short story, "Shooting an Elephant", George Orwell, who writes from his own
experiences, describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma. The narrator
feels forced to shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot
the elephant, but because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant
die, the narrator feels compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position
of authority. Throughout the time when the narrator has had ... Show more content on

When the Burmese see the narrator with an elephant rifle, they feel excited. With the weapon in the
officer's hand, the villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as
if they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the
elephant. However, from the narrator's perspective, he states, "I had no intention of shooting the
elephant––I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary". In his mind, he wishes that
the elephant will not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the
narrator cannot turn back. Behind him, there "was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and
growing every minute. It blocked the road for a long distance on either side". The villagers expect
him to be brave enough to shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock
him for being afraid to kill the elephant. The narrator knows that "every white man's life in the East,
was one long struggle not to be laughed at". If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack
of power over the Burmese. Therefore, he has no choice.
Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The
narrator's decision to murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the
excited Burmese around him, he "was only an absurd puppet

My Love Of Education
Many people are on their own route towards what they consider receiving or claiming an education.
Whether it be a formal or informal education, we all approach obstacles that keep us away from a
direction we may have our mind or even our heart set on. In this essay, I will describe my
experiences in which my education has brought me close to losing my temper and self–confidence.
I used to groom the knots of her black–and–white coat that would pile up on her belly. But, one day,
I remember coming across a ball–like lump under her skin. I moved it around to see if it bothered
her, but she just lay there with her belly up, waiting for me to finish. The next morning, my dad and
I took her to the vet and found out they were benign tumors, but should be removed before they
could turn into something more serious. My family struggled to find the funds to remove the lumps.
My love for animals, and particularly for my dog, Lyn Yang, quickly turned into dreams of being
able to remove the lumps myself. But at that point, I was helpless. I thought, maybe one day, I'd be a
veterinarian and able to rid animals of their problems.
That was the beginning of the dream.
Growing up, I mostly stuck by my parents and they didn't stimulate my interest in animals. Even
with all the time we spent at the vet, I never thought to speak to a veterinarian. What did I know
about job–shadowing? I now realize the importance of having real–life role–models, and someone to
speak to about my goals and aspirations. It's like Sonia Sotomayor said, "When a young person,
even a gifted one, grows up without proximate living examples of what she may aspire to become,
her goal remains abstract."
In those days, in my environment, my dream to become a veterinarian gradually diminished. So
much diminished during my teenage years. I found my mind shrinking. I could feel my dream
getting smaller and smaller. Instead of choosing a profession that could drive me, I let me
community drive me instead – and it got the best of me.
Life is different when you don't have a dream. I spent a lot of time in the streets. I had this small–
minded definition of success, particularly when everyone around me was making fast money. The
slow–developing value of an education

A Nurse At Methadone Clinic
Sotomayor was born in Bronx, New York, on June 25, 1954 to parents whom emigrated from Puerto
Rico. The family, including her brother, survived on a very moderate income while living in
government public housing or "the projects." Juan, Sonia's father, whom had only a third–grade
education, was employed as tool–and die worker and her mother, Celina, worked as a telephone
operator until beginning her employment as a nurse at methadone clinic. Sonia was the eldest of the
two children, raised by their single mother after Juan died when Sonia was only nine years of age.
Celina, worked hard to provide for her children, making it possible for Sonia to attend a Catholic
school in the Bronx. Sonia did very well at Cardinal Spellman High School, graduating as her class
valedictorian in 1972. Sotomayor became inspired to become a lawyer and eventually a judge after
watching an episode of Perry Mason as a child ("Supreme court review," 2016). Sotomayor earned a
full scholarship to Princeton University. Sonia was initially very quiet and sheepish as a Hispanic
woman at Princeton University. Ultimately, Sotomayor became an activist for Puerto Rican and
Hispanic issues on campus. In particular, Sonia was troubled by the absence of Latin American
faculty and Latin American Studies courses on campus. Sotomayor resorted to filing a complaint
with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, after her meetings with Princeton
Leadership resulted in no changes, asserting that Princeton

Persuasive Essay On Internet Safety
The three pieces are focused on internet safety and how/ should we make the internet a safer place
for our younger generation. They are all begging the question what is the balance between
unnecessary restriction and the safety of the most venerable members of our society through ideas of
internet addiction suicide and, feelings of fear and despair but to resolve it with solutions The writer
of this article (Stephen Balkan published on Friday the 15th of august 2014) outlines arguments
made by various acclaimed members of society such as the education advisor Anthony smythe.
Balkam used smythe to convey idea that the internet "is a lawless jungle too dangerous for children
to use" balkam uses this quote to make the audience feel fear and to give those invested a fresh look
on the internet. She then says that his depiction of the internet is a "bleak and somewhat anarchic
depiction" balkam then says that his views are aligned this way because of some "high–profile cases
of teenagers taking their own lives" smythe then goes on to say that we need tighter legislation
around the internet. Balkam furthers this argument with ideas from the non–profit FOSI (Family
Online Safety Institute) though in specifying that the institute is non–profit the author is saying that
this is selfless institute that we should listen to and makes the audience feel more obliged to take
their opinion into hand. The FOFI says that "they welcome any efforts to tackle difficult and
complex issues" the

Livingstone, I presume?". This was the formal yet informal meeting of the two. Livingstone ended
up passing away shortly in 1873. Stanley was very interested in Livingstone's explorations and
wanted to continue his legacy (David Livingstone. Web). Stanley went on to continue to explore the
Congo, as he was very intrigued by the resources it had to offer. He found that there was an
abundance of ivory, iron, and especially rubber. He wrote about his findings and published them all

Enrique 's Journey By Sonia Nazario
Enrique's Journey
In the book Enrique's Journey written by Sonia Nazario, a projects reporter for the Los Angeles
Times, Nazario talks about the true story of a young Honduran boy named Enrique that was
abandoned at the age of 5 by his mother Lourdes. His mom left to the United States as an immigrant
to work so she can be able to give her poor children a better living. After 11 years of tears, sadness
and loneliness pass Enrique decides to go to North Carolina in search of his mother. Family is the
central theme of Enrique 's Journey. By basing her investigation around Enrique 's story, Nazario
explores the ways that immigration affects an individual's family. Lourdes insistently believes that
she is acting in the most responsible way as a parent by traveling to the U.S. for work. Though she
initially makes the trip for her children, they immediately feel the heartbreak of separation
beginning with Enrique who is asking where his mother is. Their whole notion of "family" becomes
completely broken and will be seen later when the cycle continues with the family Enrique has
created with Maria Isabella.
Characters in this book must make many difficult decisions in order to deal with their debilitating
poverty. While growing up in Honduras, Lourdes glimpsed images of the U.S. on television as most
young children in other countries do, and starting at a young age decided she wanted a piece of the
so–called "American Dream" for herself. She was enthralled by what she saw, like

Utah V. Illinois Detective Fackrell
UTAH v. STRIEFF
Reading over UTAH v. STRIEFF I will expound on some facts of the case that impacted some of the
decision making in police administration. Narcotics detective Douglas Fackrell was surveilling a
South Salt Lake City residence due to the anonymous tip on suspicious drug activity. Based on his
surveillance he determined that the resident was drug dealing. Detective Fackrell saw Strieff leaving
the residence. He identified and detained Strieff to answer questions about what was going on inside
the house. He ran a check and discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant for a traffic violation.
Detective Fackrell searched him and found little baggies of methamphetamine and drug
paraphernalia only minutes after the illegal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Assuming but not determining Detective Fackrell did not have enough grounds to stop Strieff at
first, but when he was made known of the arrest warrant; it attenuated the connection with the
unlawful stop and the evidence detained from Strieff incident to his arrest. He discovered the drugs
only in the minutes after his illegal stop. Although he had a valid warrant, it had nothing to do with
the discovery of evidence. The warrant only allowed Detective Fackrell to arrest Strieff, but his
search of Strieff's incident to that arrest was considered lawful. The detective was careless in nature
and called his judgment to be questioned. Did he violate Strieff's Fourth Amendment rights?
Although his conducted an unlawful stop, his conduct was lawful, and there are no signs that the
stop was part of any systemic or police misconduct. At this point, Detective Fackrell's judgment
should not constitute a warrant suppression. He was not there just to poke at Shierff. He was there to
gather information about his investigation. Strieff says otherwise due to the absence of probable
cause.
The court determined a baseline or how they were going to exclude evidence based on the Fourth
Amendment violation. Dismissal is only necessary when the benefits outweigh its costs. The
exclusionary rule is very vital in determining if the police officer's conduct was unlawful. By
excluding the illegally obtained evidence, courts minimized the temptation of the

The Black-Latino Alliance During the Obama Administration...
In 2008, African–American presidential nominee Barack Obama garnered 67% of the Latino vote.
In his bid for re–election, President Barack Obama acquired 71% of the Latino vote (Pew Research
Center). With these statistics in mind, one can conclude that there has been a consistent growing
pattern of continued co–operation between blacks and Latinos at the national level. This is in
complete contrast however, to the mindset of some observers who believed that Latinos would not
come out in the numbers they did because of racial bias and because of the fact that Obama received
much less support amongst Latinos in the democratic primaries when faced against Hilary Clinton
(Hero & Preuhs, p.3). Many people mistakenly thought this to be so because ... Show more content

This is due to several reasons. The first and most important reason is that both these groups have
shared the American experience as minorities in quite the same fashion. For example, blacks and
Latinos both faced internal colonialism. This is why they have till this day been subordinate to the
white race. As Cesar Chavez once said, "our separate struggles are really one. A struggle for
freedom, for dignity, and for humanity" (Chavez, quoted in Hero & Preuhs, p.10). For example, as
mentioned in the introduction, "both blacks and Latinos have higher unemployment rates than
whites. Both groups are two to three times more likely to live in poverty as whites. And finally,
black and Latino students are more likely to drop out of high school and less likely to score well on
standardized tests than white non–Hispanic students" (Hero & Preuhs, p.10). And so this is the
primary reason as to why both blacks and Latinos support the same policy agenda which in turn has
led to the formation of coalitions between blacks and Latinos. For example, the Rainbow coalition
(led by high–profile leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez) became a common
term for multiracial coalitions in American Politics which advocated health, social, political, and
economic policy benefits to alleviate the disadvantages shared by both groups (Hero & Preuhs).

The Life and Mission of David Livingstone
David Livingstone's life began on March 19th, 1813, in the town of Blantyre, South Lanarkshire,
Scotland. He had six siblings. David could recite Psalm 119, at the age of 9. At the age of 10, David
began to be employed at the cotton mill of H. Monteith and Co, where he worked 12 to 14 hour
days, 6 days a week, as a piecer, with his older brother John. A piecer is a young child that crawls
through the giant looms, to watch for broken threads. When the threads break, it is their job to
quickly tie them back together. Around the time David began working, a law was passed requiring
factories and mills to teach children that were 12 and under. However, the law sadly did not state
when they had to hold classes, so more often than not the business owner would supply classes from
8 to 10 P.M, after the children had already worked their shifts. Many children did not take advantage
of the free classes, but David did. He would force himself to stay awake and focus, just so that he
could learn. Two years later, plants and herbs caught David's interest. He owned a botany book,
which he studied with care, even though his father would not of allowed it because it was science.
At this time in the world, people believed that science and Christianity could not go together
because that would be questioning why God made things the way He made them. However, David
studied science anyway. There came a time in his life that he had a choice to make. Science or
Religion. He had to

Film Review : Film Analysis Of 12 Angry Men
Although 12 Angry Men was released over 60 years ago, the film has maintained universal acclaim
among movie critics. With a rare score of 100% on the movie review website RottenTomatoes.com,
it is worth investigating what makes this film so appealing. With a seemingly mundane plot, 12
Angry Men follows a jury that debates over the innocence or guilt of a young man who is accused of
murder. There are no bright explosions or grandiose imagery. Instead, 12 Angry Men manages to
capture audiences simply by offering an engaging story, outstanding acting, and creative production
techniques.
Although the film takes place in a single room, the story succeeds in gripping the audience simply
through the conversation of the jurors. The film begins with the impression that the defendant in the
trial is obviously guilty. But when the jurors take a preliminary vote, there is one man, Juror #8, who
votes "not guilty". All of the jurors are frustrated with Juror #8's decision, but they decide to talk it
out. This initial conflict sets the stage for a series of intricate exchanges which bring the audience
into the story. When the jurors begin to analyze the evidence from the trial, reenact the murder, and
question the validity of the witnesses' testimonies, more jurors decide to switch their vote to "not
guilty". This process of slowly revealing new information through the jury's commentary makes for
excellent storytelling and keeps viewers engaged with the film. In contrast to 12 Angry Men, one
recent film named Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen failed to appease movie critics due to a lack
of compelling storytelling. Throughout the Transformer film, storylines jump around inconsistently
before poorly converging towards the end. In a scathing review, Douglas Perry, a movie critic and
author for The Orgenion, references Transformers and other big budget films."'Revenge of the
Fallen' almost feels like it's signaling an end–game for blockbuster movies: all sensation, no content,
catastrophic expense." While 12 Angry Men lacks loud interstellar robots, massive explosions, and
even color picture, the film has an engaging story which successfully keeps viewers hooked to their
screen. Helping to progress the story, the actors

importance of farming and her mother taught her the importance of education. In 1935 she moved to

Henry Morton Stanley's Impact Upon Imperialist Congo
For Europeans, the African Congo was a land full of unsolved mysteries and intriguing economic
prospects in the second half of the 19th century. It was the last region of Africa to be explored by
Europeans; for over 400 years, Europeans had attempted time and time again to explore the region,
and yet all had succumbed to unbearable hardships and impassible terrain. It is likely that this region
would have remained unexplored until very recently if it were not for a man named Henry Morton
Stanley. Stanley was the first European explorer to lead a successful journey into Congo,
overcoming the unbelievable probability of failure to open up the heart of tropical Africa to
European imperialism. However, his journey was neither smooth nor ... Show more content on

However, before he began his association with the Belgian Congo, he first made a second journey to
Africa to explore today's D.R. Congo and Uganda after briefly traveling to London to reinforce his
supplies. He began this expedition with several hundred men, modern equipment, and a state–of–
the–art ship. This time, Stanley opted for guns rather than whips to force his men forward at a faster
pace, as he was still in competition with other explorers and felt the pressure to travel at a rapid
pace. Using this tactic, Stanley was able to navigate Lake Victoria and follow the Congo River all
the way to the Atlantic Ocean. He became the first European to map these areas. Satisfied with his
work, he returned to Europe in 1878 (Bierman 176). Upon his return, Stanley was hailed as the man
who had resolved one of the greatest exploration mysteries, found Dr. Livingstone, and eventually
became the catalyst to what would become a significant example of imperialism's influence upon
Europe's subject peoples. Factories could now utilize material goods from Congo, exploit the
peoples of Africa, and increase income from trade an immeasurable amount. Stanley received a

The Funeral Of Baroness Thatcher
The amazing thing about the funeral of Baroness Thatcher was the size of the crowds, and the next
amazing thing was that they were so relatively well behaved. The BBC had done its best to foment
an uprising.
With habitual good taste, they played Ding Dong the witch is dead on taxpayer–public radio. Asked
to find some commentators to give an instant reaction to the death of Britain's greatest post–war
prime minister – an event that was not exactly unforeseen –they reached instinctively for Gerry
Adams and Ken Livingstone, two of her bitterest foes – if you exclude the Tory wets, that is.
As her cortege wound its way from St Brides to St Paul's there were a few people so stupid that they
heckled the mortal remains of an 87 year old woman. A few turned their backs. Some wore twerpish
Guy Fawkes masks or carried signs saying"Boo". But the mass of humanity was on her side, and
when the dissenters erupted they were swiftly drowned by cries of shhh or calculated volleys of
applause.
I know all this partly from media accounts and partly because I walked through the crowds and I
saw how various her mourners were. There were some tweedy types and some suited thrusters, and
people who would generally not look out of place at a Tory party conference.
But there were also people from all over London, immigrants of every race and colour – people that
the BBC might not have marked down, perhaps, as natural Thatcherites – and yet who had come to

Lanarkshire, Scotland, and grew up with several siblings in a single tenement room. His father was a
passionate member of a missionary society, he taught a Protestant Sunday school where he took a
literal interpretation of the Bible. However, this was not enough to sustain a life any higher than that
of poverty. Due to this Livingstone had to work 14 hours a day in a local cotton mill from the age of
10 to 26. Here the experience left him with a rare respect and empathy for workers and worker–
slaves. In 1836, he began his studies in medicine and theology in Glasgow where he then decided to
become a missionary doctor. 9 years later he married the daughter ... Show more content on

At the end of the 1850s, he resigned from the London Missionary Society to devote more time to
exploration. He received a commission from the Royal Geographic Society and this helped fund an
exploration up the River Zambezi. This exploration encountered many difficulties and was
perceived to be a failure by many. In 1866, Livingstone returned to Africa for a mission to discover
the source of the Nile. He never quite attained this goal, but regardless this helped to fill in details
about the great Lakes of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Mweru. Livingstone also helped identify Lake
Malawi and Lake Ngami. Unfortunately on this expedition he again lost helpers due to illness or
desertion. After suffering a variety of tropical illnesses throughout his life, Livingstone died of
dysentery in 1872, aged 59. He passed away knelt in prayer. By faith David was one of the greatest
Christian missionaries by travelling to the unknowns lead by his determination to preach the Gospel
to those who did not have the opportunity or abilities to do so. His determination lead to the further

The Nurse Practitioner
Growing up my family had little to no money. My parents, immigrants from El Salvador, worked
two jobs each. Home was a small space with a conjoined kitchen and living room. When Mom and
Dad first arrived to America, they never imagined a child of theirs would become a university
student. Coming to America itself was in their wildest dreams. To them, an education of that level
was unattainable. Now, I represent my family wherever I go. I am at TWU for my family and for my
dreams. One day, I will be the Nurse Practitioner I always envisioned. But more importantly, I will
give my parents and my grandmother everything they never had. Now that I am older I comprehend
the magnitude of their sacrifices. When I hear the name Texas Woman's University, ... Show more

All my life they explained to me the importance of an education. "You've got to get your education!
It's the only way to get ahead in the world" were the words told to Sotomayor by her mother. Words
that I heard my entire life. My parents instilled in me that one day I could have something far
beyond what they do. Intertwined in the pages of Sotomayor's book is an account of her Mother's
efforts to keep her children educated. On one occasion her mother bought them educational
textbooks to study and even paid to get her children lessons. Like her mother, my parents opened a
world of possibility for me too. They worked extra shifts to get me music lessons, waited outside of
school an extra hour when I had events, and payed for me to stay in sports. They went far and
beyond to secure an education for me and my sisters. "The world branched out before me in a
thousand new directions." explains Sotomayor of the learning experiences her mother exposed her
to. My parents are an essential link in what my career goals have become.
A major step towards pursuing my career was deciding on a college to attend. Visiting TWU was
like a breath of fresh air. Like Sotomayor with Princeton, I immediately made a firm decision to
make it my school. Ironically, Sotomayor's moment of distress when she visited Radcliffe was a lot
like the one I experienced when I visited the University of Texas in Arlington. Relating my
important life decisions to those of judge Sotomayor has been reassuring. I had a lot of insecurities
about not being good enough at TWU. Sometimes, however, I tend to sell myself

The Case Of Elonis V. United States
Judiciary Assignment While, reading the case, Elonis v. United States, I was astonished to see that
someone would post something so explicit, offensive, and inhumane. Basically, the case of Elonis v.
United States is about a man named Anthony Elonis who is an upcoming rapper and used his stage
name, Tone Dougie. His Facebook page consisted of him posting disturbing rap lyrics. Even though
Elonis was going through a divorce with his former wife, which did not stop him from writing and
posting crude lyrics. Eventually, it got to the point where his wife felt that she was being targeted by
his lyrics. According to an article on, New York Times, Elonis wrote that he wanted to see a
Halloween costume that included his wife's "head" on a stick. Obviously, she felt threatened and
reported the assaults to the police. Anthony Elonis was convicted for posting threats that targeted his
wife, his coworkers, police officers, a kindergarten class, and even an FBI agent. Although Elonis
argued that his posting are not considered to be a "true threat" and that he is protected under the First
Amendment. I believe he wanted to cause fear towards his wife, Tara and therefore, is his lyrics are
a true threat. Basically, a true threat is defined as something a person would consider to be
"purposely" harmful and cause pain. Elonis mentioned that his post were not offended nor were the
threatening anybody. He stated that he did not have the intent of trying to harm anyone, he was just

Child Neglect In Joey : A Mechanical Boy By Bruno Bettelheim
The issues caused by child neglect are very hard for a child to overcome as they mature. This point
is made clear by Bruno Bettelheim in, "Joey: A Mechanical Boy". This story portrays how hard it
was for a young boy named, Joey, to move past his parents neglect of him when he was a child. In
the beginning when Bettelheim began working with Joey he noted the obvious mechanical behavior
of the child. Joey operated by what appeared to be remote control. Joey himself believed that he was
a machine, but he also influenced others into believing that he was a machine. If the machine
running his body didn't work than Joey didn't seem to exist; it was this behavior that was unsettling
but also interesting for Bettelheim. With Joey's body being operated by a machine it was strange to
observe and realize that a body could be present and function without a soul. Joey is preoccupied by
his own imaginary world, but according to Bettelheim, "Not every child who possesses a fantasy
world is possessed by it" (303). Children can retreat to their own imaginary worlds for closure in a
time of need, but they can come back to reality when it is necessary. For Joey, this is not the case; he
is a "prisoner of the inner world of delusion and fantasy" (303). Joey chose to set himself into the
image of a machine so that he could try to free himself from emotions. He convinced himself and
others that he was a machine. When Bettelheim was first introduced to Joey's case Joey was nine–
years–old. The

Hobby Lobby and the Obama Administration
The issue is over Hobby Lobby vs. the Obama Administration. Hobby Lobby has taken a stance
against ObamaCare's contraception coverage. ObamaCare's affordable health care act, gives
employees who are women access to contraceptives such as the morning after pill and IUDs, which
the plaintiffs of Hobby Lobby considered to be forms of abortion. The contraceptive coverage in the
new Health Care law makes preventative care more accessible and affordable to millions of
Americans. This is particularly important for women who are more likely to avoid the cost of

Although Livingstone was reluctant, his financial future was not looking promising and he knew he
needed one last expedition to Africa. His goal was to write a book of this last adventure that would
sell enough to ensure a safe retirement. On August 14, 1865, Livingstone set sail for Africa.
After two and a half years of travelling, it was apparent that this would be the toughest adventure
Livingstone would ever encounter. Livingstone was traveling with some Arab slave traders to Ujiji
because his porters had left him and stole his supplies. When the porters returned to Zanzibar, they
reported Livingstone dead. When E. D. Young, a Royal Navy gunner that travelled with
Livingstone, read the March 7, 1867 Times he was shocked and filled with disbelief, Livingstone
was dead. After doing some research on the reports of Livingstones death, Young was convinced
that David Livingstone was not dead. So, Young sent a letter to Murchison explaining his opinion on
the situation. Murchison responded by calling the gunner to Britain to create a rescue strategy. The
goal was for Young to head into Africa and find answers to the confusion and not to return until
proof was found. Whether it was his dead remains or not, Young agreed to go into Africa and find
David Livingstone. After searching for 10 months, Young had proof that David Livingstone was still
alive and he returned to London. When Young

Myth Of Meritocracy
Is the myth of meritocracy more prevalent for minorities?
The myth of meritocracy has been proven true in multiply sources. Studies have hypothesized this
before when relating to upward mobility. Upward mobility in the last forty years has been more and
more unlikely for years and years now. Factors like race, socioeconomic status, household makeup,
and economic conditions of this country play a big role. I will go more indepth about this study by
showing more facts in the following paragraphs.
The American dream for years has been see known to be something that anybody can achieve with
hard work through all obstacles. For most of Americans, especially minorities, this does not occur.
The notion that working hard will get you somewhere with your merits does not face up to the
statistics. But despite all these statistics, facts, and evidence, people, usually minority, aspose these
talking points non–stop. Matter of fact, the average person has a little chance of mobility or stay in
the same socioeconomic class. In my own personal life, I have yet to achieve the American dream.
My own parents have are janitors and grew up in poverty. You can say that they themselves are clear
example of the difficulty of achieving success solely on meritocracy. Now you might ask what is
your definition of the American dream? For me, the American dream is about owning a home,
having enough money to not struggle to buy food, clothing, and decent water for not only me but my

Abortion: A Qualitative Study
Abortion has been a delicate, heavily debated topic for years. It has not only been a heated topic in
the religious aspect of the world, but in the political aspect as well. Political figures around the
world have been faced with the task of figuring out how to handle abortion. Many countries even
have laws in place describing what can and cannot be done.
There's an article on Malaysian abortion laws. Malaysia has relatively liberal abortion laws in that
they permit abortions for both physical and mental health cases. However, abortion remains a taboo
subject. The stagnating contraceptive prevalence rate combined with the plunging fertility rate
suggests that abortion might be occurring clandestinely. This qualitative study aimed to explore ...

There are also many parties that seek to have a voice in this debate on abortion. These groups range
from religious, political, women's rights, medical and pharmaceutical. Each group has their own
personal agenda when it comes to the issue of abortion. Some of the groups which were formed are
the National Right to Life Committee, Students for Life, 40 Days for Life and Live Actions, Susan
B. Anthony List, and Concerned Women for America, just to name a few. However, the one point
that they all agree upon is the right to an abortion in cases of rape or fetal abnormality or to protect
the health of the woman.
The issue of abortion is like a tree with several branches that reach out in several directions. No one
can determine which branch is leading in a safe direction because there can always be more than one
safe branch. Which is the reason why the issue of abortion will continue to be an issue that will keep
the controversy going for quite some time and wage war in our judicial systems for some time. The
fight continues to lead the majority of our presidential elections and can often be the deciding factor

The Internet : Addiction To The Internet
Today's youth generation, has a strong attachment to the online world. Many adolescents spend most
of their time online versus offline. Therefore, one can consider these adolescents as a social network
addict, a person who spends a fair amount of time on one or many social platforms. Throughout the
three articles, "Social Networking Addiction: An Overview of Preliminary Findings" by Mark
Griffiths, "Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship" by Nicole B. Ellison and
"Taking Risky Opportunities in Youthful Content Creation: Teenagers' use of Social Networking
Sites for Intimacy, Privacy, and Self–expression" by Sonia Livingstone, demonstrate how this
addiction has impacted people's communication among people. While there are positive and
negative aspects of social networking, the negative aspects tend to overpower the positive ones
when it comes to communication. Although it increases a person's ability to contact with others
quickly, it also decreased people's ability to have those face to face conversations because they
spend a significant amount of time online. Although social networking is addicting, it contributes to
an easier, wider, quicker, and broader communication with others. It has been shown through studies
that people who are on social sites create more and new contacts from other places. Being connected
helps workers "leverage their business" (Ellison 220) to enhance a person's career. Though social

The Importance Of Equality In Society
For many years, the fight for equality has either brought peace and unity or hatred. One of the
greatest events that happened in the United States was The March on Selma better known as
"Bloody Sunday". What started as a peaceful protest, turned into turmoil. Another event was when
Dr. Martin Luther King gave the "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington. This
speech has been effective for many decades and is a reminder that us people should unite and strive
for greatness. Though gave the Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, our nation and other parts of
the world continue to bring division and hatred. When will the world know when enough is enough?
I believe that society does not owe us equality due to the fact that true equality is impossible. In
order to have a perfect society, we would need to have the same level of education, the exact same
amount of wealth, and the exact same social status. In other words, we would an utopian society in
order to be successful.
"Until we get equality in education, we won't have an equal society," said Sonia Sotomayor. Being
educated is highly valued within our society. Education is essential to have a better future. Some
others believe that education can lead to a better job and which will eventually lead to more money.
Without education the world will not function right. We would live in the world without knowledge
and it would be impossible to move on with everyday life. Our society would be utopian if everyone

Diabetes did not Prevent a Better Future for Sonia Sotomayor
Can a disease prevent you from chasing your dream? For Sonia it did not. In fact, it was her
motivation. Sonias disease is what pushed her for a better future.
Sonia Sotomayor had a somewhat typical Puerto Rican childhood. She was born in New York to her
parents Juan Luis Sotomayor and Celina Baez de Sotomayor. Her only sibling was her younger
brother, Juan Luis Sotomayor Jr. who was born when she was three years old. She grew up reading
Nancy Drew books and dreamed of being a police detective. (Bernier,) At age eight, she was
diagnosed with diabetes. The doctor told her that her diabetes would prevent her from being what
she wanted to be when she grew up, because her diabetes was so hard to treat at the time ("The
Last", 33). Not wanting to depend on her parents to keep herself alive, she learned to give herself
insulin shots every day in her belly as well as boiling the water to sterilize a syringe and needle.
Sonia had a strong desire for a good education and to get there she had to learn the English
language, but her parents only spoke Spanish and she strongly disliked the English language
(Barnes). A little hard work never hurt anyone. In 1972, Sonia graduated from Cardinal Spellman

Sonia Sotomayor 's Book About Her Life And Her Climb From...
Sonia Sotomayor's book is about her life and her climb from the streets of New York to the place
that she is today. Her book explains the challenges that she faced growing up, losing her father at
such a young age and working hard to accomplish the great achievements that she has accomplished
today. She explains how her upbringing affected how she turned out in life. She explains what it
takes for a woman of a Latino origin to sit on the bench, and she explains her reasoning. Sonia
shows how she used what she has learnt from her past experiences and how she applied these
lessons to the new situations she faced in her life. The book is distributed all over the United States
and inspired more and more Latinos every day. In this way, she has helped them by giving them an
inspirational story that will be told for years to come, and she will be remembered for much more
than her book.
When Sonia Sotomayor was 7 years old, she was hospitalized with diabetes and she had to learn
how to give herself insulin shots by practicing on an orange. At home, her mother showed her how
to light the stove with a match, and together they would fill a pot with water to disinfect the syringe
and needle. Sonia was taught to wait for the water to boil and then to wait five minutes more. The
daily shots became her way of avoiding conflict between her parents. Sonia's father's hands trembled
because of his alcoholism, and her mother, a nurse who worked long hours, would get angry when
she couldn't rely

Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant

  • 1. Analysis Of Shooting An Elephant Sometimes, the people around a man force him to give up his freedom by giving in to what the audience expects. The person wants to make the audience pleased and wishes to keep his reputation high. In the short story, "Shooting an Elephant", George Orwell, who writes from his own experiences, describes the life of the narrator, a policeman in a foreign country, Burma. The narrator feels forced to shoot a wild elephant that has destroyed parts of a village. He does not want to shoot the elephant, but because the Burmese around him seem determined and excited to see the elephant die, the narrator feels compelled to do what the natives request to keep his high status and position of authority. Throughout the time when the narrator has had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the Burmese see the narrator with an elephant rifle, they feel excited. With the weapon in the officer's hand, the villagers anticipated that Orwell plans to shoot the elephant. The Burmese feel as if they should follow him to the elephant because they want to see if he will actually kill the elephant. However, from the narrator's perspective, he states, "I had no intention of shooting the elephant––I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary". In his mind, he wishes that the elephant will not be dangerous because he does not want to murder an animal. However, the narrator cannot turn back. Behind him, there "was an immense crowd, two thousand at the least and growing every minute. It blocked the road for a long distance on either side". The villagers expect him to be brave enough to shoot the elephant. If he gives up, then the villagers will laugh and mock him for being afraid to kill the elephant. The narrator knows that "every white man's life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at". If he turns back, he will indicate his weakness and lack of power over the Burmese. Therefore, he has no choice. Orwell uses irony to emphasize the impossible position of foreign leaders in a native country. The narrator's decision to murder the elephant proves his weakness not his strength; instead, with all the excited Burmese around him, he "was only an absurd puppet ... • 3. My Love Of Education Many people are on their own route towards what they consider receiving or claiming an education. Whether it be a formal or informal education, we all approach obstacles that keep us away from a direction we may have our mind or even our heart set on. In this essay, I will describe my experiences in which my education has brought me close to losing my temper and self–confidence. I used to groom the knots of her black–and–white coat that would pile up on her belly. But, one day, I remember coming across a ball–like lump under her skin. I moved it around to see if it bothered her, but she just lay there with her belly up, waiting for me to finish. The next morning, my dad and I took her to the vet and found out they were benign tumors, but should be removed before they could turn into something more serious. My family struggled to find the funds to remove the lumps. My love for animals, and particularly for my dog, Lyn Yang, quickly turned into dreams of being able to remove the lumps myself. But at that point, I was helpless. I thought, maybe one day, I'd be a veterinarian and able to rid animals of their problems. That was the beginning of the dream. Growing up, I mostly stuck by my parents and they didn't stimulate my interest in animals. Even with all the time we spent at the vet, I never thought to speak to a veterinarian. What did I know about job–shadowing? I now realize the importance of having real–life role–models, and someone to speak to about my goals and aspirations. It's like Sonia Sotomayor said, "When a young person, even a gifted one, grows up without proximate living examples of what she may aspire to become, her goal remains abstract." In those days, in my environment, my dream to become a veterinarian gradually diminished. So much diminished during my teenage years. I found my mind shrinking. I could feel my dream getting smaller and smaller. Instead of choosing a profession that could drive me, I let me community drive me instead – and it got the best of me. Life is different when you don't have a dream. I spent a lot of time in the streets. I had this small– minded definition of success, particularly when everyone around me was making fast money. The slow–developing value of an education ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Nurse At Methadone Clinic Sotomayor was born in Bronx, New York, on June 25, 1954 to parents whom emigrated from Puerto Rico. The family, including her brother, survived on a very moderate income while living in government public housing or "the projects." Juan, Sonia's father, whom had only a third–grade education, was employed as tool–and die worker and her mother, Celina, worked as a telephone operator until beginning her employment as a nurse at methadone clinic. Sonia was the eldest of the two children, raised by their single mother after Juan died when Sonia was only nine years of age. Celina, worked hard to provide for her children, making it possible for Sonia to attend a Catholic school in the Bronx. Sonia did very well at Cardinal Spellman High School, graduating as her class valedictorian in 1972. Sotomayor became inspired to become a lawyer and eventually a judge after watching an episode of Perry Mason as a child ("Supreme court review," 2016). Sotomayor earned a full scholarship to Princeton University. Sonia was initially very quiet and sheepish as a Hispanic woman at Princeton University. Ultimately, Sotomayor became an activist for Puerto Rican and Hispanic issues on campus. In particular, Sonia was troubled by the absence of Latin American faculty and Latin American Studies courses on campus. Sotomayor resorted to filing a complaint with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, after her meetings with Princeton Leadership resulted in no changes, asserting that Princeton ... • 7. Persuasive Essay On Internet Safety The three pieces are focused on internet safety and how/ should we make the internet a safer place for our younger generation. They are all begging the question what is the balance between unnecessary restriction and the safety of the most venerable members of our society through ideas of internet addiction suicide and, feelings of fear and despair but to resolve it with solutions The writer of this article (Stephen Balkan published on Friday the 15th of august 2014) outlines arguments made by various acclaimed members of society such as the education advisor Anthony smythe. Balkam used smythe to convey idea that the internet "is a lawless jungle too dangerous for children to use" balkam uses this quote to make the audience feel fear and to give those invested a fresh look on the internet. She then says that his depiction of the internet is a "bleak and somewhat anarchic depiction" balkam then says that his views are aligned this way because of some "high–profile cases of teenagers taking their own lives" smythe then goes on to say that we need tighter legislation around the internet. Balkam furthers this argument with ideas from the non–profit FOSI (Family Online Safety Institute) though in specifying that the institute is non–profit the author is saying that this is selfless institute that we should listen to and makes the audience feel more obliged to take their opinion into hand. • 9. Imperialism And The Congo : Imperialism Imperialism in the Congo What is imperialism? According to Britannica, imperialism is a state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. Belgium taking over the Congo is an example of this. The Congo was a peaceful country, located in the heart of Africa, consisting of warm sunny days and beautiful Lake Malebo. The people were free, and happy. This was before the hell started... King Léopold II was the reason for this to happen. Léopold found the Congo and immediately fell in love with all the resources that flourished there. Léopold then went on to colonizing the Congo and taking it in for his own. He colonized the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Livingstone, I presume?". This was the formal yet informal meeting of the two. Livingstone ended up passing away shortly in 1873. Stanley was very interested in Livingstone's explorations and wanted to continue his legacy (David Livingstone. Web). Stanley went on to continue to explore the Congo, as he was very intrigued by the resources it had to offer. He found that there was an abundance of ivory, iron, and especially rubber. He wrote about his findings and published them all throughout Europe. Stanley anticipated to develop the Congo region, but found failure in gaining the support he needed from the British. He went on to ask the Belgian king at the time – King Léopold II. Léopold was on board with Stanley's demands and was thrilled to tap into the Congo's wealth (Henry Stanley. Web). This marks the start of the idea to have imperialised the Congo. Once Léopold and Stanley came together to discuss their ideas of imperialism in the Congo, Leopold decided they needed some way to seize the land to make it his. Leopold sent Stanley down to the land, and discussed a written agreement which explained how Leopold would take over the land to prevent the Arabs from abducting the congolese as slaves. The Congolese could not understand very well, as their main language was French, but nevertheless agreed to the compliance (AWPHRocklin Belgian Congo. Web). • 11. Enrique 's Journey By Sonia Nazario Enrique's Journey In the book Enrique's Journey written by Sonia Nazario, a projects reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Nazario talks about the true story of a young Honduran boy named Enrique that was abandoned at the age of 5 by his mother Lourdes. His mom left to the United States as an immigrant to work so she can be able to give her poor children a better living. After 11 years of tears, sadness and loneliness pass Enrique decides to go to North Carolina in search of his mother. Family is the central theme of Enrique 's Journey. By basing her investigation around Enrique 's story, Nazario explores the ways that immigration affects an individual's family. Lourdes insistently believes that she is acting in the most responsible way as a parent by traveling to the U.S. for work. Though she initially makes the trip for her children, they immediately feel the heartbreak of separation beginning with Enrique who is asking where his mother is. Their whole notion of "family" becomes completely broken and will be seen later when the cycle continues with the family Enrique has created with Maria Isabella. Characters in this book must make many difficult decisions in order to deal with their debilitating poverty. While growing up in Honduras, Lourdes glimpsed images of the U.S. on television as most young children in other countries do, and starting at a young age decided she wanted a piece of the so–called "American Dream" for herself. She was enthralled by what she saw, like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Utah V. Illinois Detective Fackrell UTAH v. STRIEFF Reading over UTAH v. STRIEFF I will expound on some facts of the case that impacted some of the decision making in police administration. Narcotics detective Douglas Fackrell was surveilling a South Salt Lake City residence due to the anonymous tip on suspicious drug activity. Based on his surveillance he determined that the resident was drug dealing. Detective Fackrell saw Strieff leaving the residence. He identified and detained Strieff to answer questions about what was going on inside the house. He ran a check and discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant for a traffic violation. Detective Fackrell searched him and found little baggies of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia only minutes after the illegal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assuming but not determining Detective Fackrell did not have enough grounds to stop Strieff at first, but when he was made known of the arrest warrant; it attenuated the connection with the unlawful stop and the evidence detained from Strieff incident to his arrest. He discovered the drugs only in the minutes after his illegal stop. Although he had a valid warrant, it had nothing to do with the discovery of evidence. The warrant only allowed Detective Fackrell to arrest Strieff, but his search of Strieff's incident to that arrest was considered lawful. The detective was careless in nature and called his judgment to be questioned. Did he violate Strieff's Fourth Amendment rights? • 17. The Black-Latino Alliance During the Obama Administration... In 2008, African–American presidential nominee Barack Obama garnered 67% of the Latino vote. In his bid for re–election, President Barack Obama acquired 71% of the Latino vote (Pew Research Center). With these statistics in mind, one can conclude that there has been a consistent growing pattern of continued co–operation between blacks and Latinos at the national level. This is in complete contrast however, to the mindset of some observers who believed that Latinos would not come out in the numbers they did because of racial bias and because of the fact that Obama received much less support amongst Latinos in the democratic primaries when faced against Hilary Clinton (Hero & Preuhs, p.3). Many people mistakenly thought this to be so because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is due to several reasons. The first and most important reason is that both these groups have shared the American experience as minorities in quite the same fashion. For example, blacks and Latinos both faced internal colonialism. This is why they have till this day been subordinate to the white race. As Cesar Chavez once said, "our separate struggles are really one. A struggle for freedom, for dignity, and for humanity" (Chavez, quoted in Hero & Preuhs, p.10). For example, as mentioned in the introduction, "both blacks and Latinos have higher unemployment rates than whites. Both groups are two to three times more likely to live in poverty as whites. And finally, black and Latino students are more likely to drop out of high school and less likely to score well on standardized tests than white non–Hispanic students" (Hero & Preuhs, p.10). And so this is the primary reason as to why both blacks and Latinos support the same policy agenda which in turn has led to the formation of coalitions between blacks and Latinos. For example, the Rainbow coalition (led by high–profile leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez) became a common term for multiracial coalitions in American Politics which advocated health, social, political, and economic policy benefits to alleviate the disadvantages shared by both groups (Hero & Preuhs). • 19. The Life and Mission of David Livingstone David Livingstone's life began on March 19th, 1813, in the town of Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. He had six siblings. David could recite Psalm 119, at the age of 9. At the age of 10, David began to be employed at the cotton mill of H. Monteith and Co, where he worked 12 to 14 hour days, 6 days a week, as a piecer, with his older brother John. A piecer is a young child that crawls through the giant looms, to watch for broken threads. When the threads break, it is their job to quickly tie them back together. Around the time David began working, a law was passed requiring factories and mills to teach children that were 12 and under. However, the law sadly did not state when they had to hold classes, so more often than not the business owner would supply classes from 8 to 10 P.M, after the children had already worked their shifts. Many children did not take advantage of the free classes, but David did. He would force himself to stay awake and focus, just so that he could learn. Two years later, plants and herbs caught David's interest. He owned a botany book, which he studied with care, even though his father would not of allowed it because it was science. At this time in the world, people believed that science and Christianity could not go together because that would be questioning why God made things the way He made them. However, David studied science anyway. There came a time in his life that he had a choice to make. Science or Religion. He had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Film Review : Film Analysis Of 12 Angry Men Although 12 Angry Men was released over 60 years ago, the film has maintained universal acclaim among movie critics. With a rare score of 100% on the movie review website RottenTomatoes.com, it is worth investigating what makes this film so appealing. With a seemingly mundane plot, 12 Angry Men follows a jury that debates over the innocence or guilt of a young man who is accused of murder. There are no bright explosions or grandiose imagery. Instead, 12 Angry Men manages to capture audiences simply by offering an engaging story, outstanding acting, and creative production techniques. Although the film takes place in a single room, the story succeeds in gripping the audience simply through the conversation of the jurors. The film begins with the impression that the defendant in the trial is obviously guilty. But when the jurors take a preliminary vote, there is one man, Juror #8, who votes "not guilty". All of the jurors are frustrated with Juror #8's decision, but they decide to talk it out. This initial conflict sets the stage for a series of intricate exchanges which bring the audience into the story. When the jurors begin to analyze the evidence from the trial, reenact the murder, and question the validity of the witnesses' testimonies, more jurors decide to switch their vote to "not guilty". This process of slowly revealing new information through the jury's commentary makes for excellent storytelling and keeps viewers engaged with the film. In contrast to 12 Angry Men, one recent film named Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen failed to appease movie critics due to a lack of compelling storytelling. Throughout the Transformer film, storylines jump around inconsistently before poorly converging towards the end. In a scathing review, Douglas Perry, a movie critic and author for The Orgenion, references Transformers and other big budget films."'Revenge of the Fallen' almost feels like it's signaling an end–game for blockbuster movies: all sensation, no content, catastrophic expense." While 12 Angry Men lacks loud interstellar robots, massive explosions, and even color picture, the film has an engaging story which successfully keeps viewers hooked to their screen. On his second trip he learned the Bachauna and Bakwain's native tongue Bantu. And like most missionaries he often mixed up the meaning of words. Once when he was preaching on sin he was actual talking about the dangers of cow manure. According to Britannica, imperialism is a state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. The people were free, and happy. This was before the hell started... King Léopold II was the reason for this to happen. It was the last region of Africa to be explored by Europeans; for over 400 years, Europeans had attempted time and time again to explore the region, and yet all had succumbed to unbearable hardships and impassible terrain. It is likely that this region would have remained unexplored until very recently if it were not for a man named Henry Morton Stanley. This time, Stanley opted for guns rather than whips to force his men forward at a faster pace, as he was still in competition with other explorers and felt the pressure to travel at a rapid pace. Using this tactic, Stanley was able to navigate Lake Victoria and follow the Congo River all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. He became the first European to map these areas. Satisfied with his work, he returned to Europe in 1878 (Bierman 176). Upon his return, Stanley was hailed as the man who had resolved one of the greatest exploration mysteries, found Dr. Livingstone, and eventually became the catalyst to what would become a significant example of imperialism's influence upon Europe's subject peoples. But the mass of humanity was on her side, and when the dissenters erupted they were swiftly drowned by cries of shhh or calculated volleys of applause. I know all this partly from media accounts and partly because I walked through the crowds and I saw how various her mourners were. • 43. Child Neglect In Joey : A Mechanical Boy By Bruno Bettelheim The issues caused by child neglect are very hard for a child to overcome as they mature. This point is made clear by Bruno Bettelheim in, "Joey: A Mechanical Boy". This story portrays how hard it was for a young boy named, Joey, to move past his parents neglect of him when he was a child. In the beginning when Bettelheim began working with Joey he noted the obvious mechanical behavior of the child. Joey operated by what appeared to be remote control. Joey himself believed that he was a machine, but he also influenced others into believing that he was a machine. If the machine running his body didn't work than Joey didn't seem to exist; it was this behavior that was unsettling but also interesting for Bettelheim. With Joey's body being operated by a machine it was strange to observe and realize that a body could be present and function without a soul. Joey is preoccupied by his own imaginary world, but according to Bettelheim, "Not every child who possesses a fantasy world is possessed by it" (303). Children can retreat to their own imaginary worlds for closure in a time of need, but they can come back to reality when it is necessary. For Joey, this is not the case; he is a "prisoner of the inner world of delusion and fantasy" (303). His goal was to write a book of this last adventure that would sell enough to ensure a safe retirement. On August 14, 1865, Livingstone set sail for Africa. After two and a half years of travelling, it was apparent that this would be the toughest adventure Livingstone would ever encounter. Livingstone was traveling with some Arab slave traders to Ujiji because his porters had left him and stole his supplies. When the porters returned to Zanzibar, they reported Livingstone dead. When E. D. Young, a Royal Navy gunner that travelled with Livingstone, read the March 7, 1867 Times he was shocked and filled with disbelief, Livingstone was dead. After doing some research on the reports of Livingstones death, Young was convinced that David Livingstone was not dead. So, Young sent a letter to Murchison explaining his opinion on the situation. Murchison responded by calling the gunner to Britain to create a rescue strategy. The goal was for Young to head into Africa and find answers to the confusion and not to return until proof was found. Whether it was his dead remains or not, Young agreed to go into Africa and find David Livingstone. After searching for 10 months, Young had proof that David Livingstone was still alive and he returned to London. When Young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her book, My Beloved World, Sonia reveals many people, circumstances, hardships, and successfulness. Sonia has embraces many characteristics in which I can relate. Successfulness, determination, and the importance of learning are all crucial elements that make Sonia into the inspiring woman she is today. Relating to Sonia Sotomayor throughout her book allowed me to remain intrigued in the book and helped apply concepts to my everyday life. We as human beings all strive for success. We use success as a measure of everyday life. "After a time you may recognize the proper measure of success is not how much you've closed the distance to some far–off goal but the quality of what you've done today" (Sotomayor Preface). Every person has their definition and view of success, but I believe Sonia Sotomayor stated a quality point in how we self–reflect on our lives. I believe finding success in the little things will push me farther along my path toward my ultimate goals. I also believe we all admire someone who we perceive to be successful. President Obama turned to Sonia Sotomayor not only for her experience in law but for the humanity he searched for as Sotomayor, had both democratic and republicans praising her accomplishments throughout her life. • 65. Myth Of Meritocracy Is the myth of meritocracy more prevalent for minorities? The myth of meritocracy has been proven true in multiply sources. Studies have hypothesized this before when relating to upward mobility. Upward mobility in the last forty years has been more and more unlikely for years and years now. Factors like race, socioeconomic status, household makeup, and economic conditions of this country play a big role. I will go more indepth about this study by showing more facts in the following paragraphs. The American dream for years has been see known to be something that anybody can achieve with hard work through all obstacles. For most of Americans, especially minorities, this does not occur. The notion that working hard will get you somewhere with your merits does not face up to the statistics. But despite all these statistics, facts, and evidence, people, usually minority, aspose these talking points non–stop. Matter of fact, the average person has a little chance of mobility or stay in the same socioeconomic class. In my own personal life, I have yet to achieve the American dream. My own parents have are janitors and grew up in poverty. You can say that they themselves are clear example of the difficulty of achieving success solely on meritocracy. Now you might ask what is your definition of the American dream? For me, the American dream is about owning a home, having enough money to not struggle to buy food, clothing, and decent water for not only me but my wonderful family as ... It has not only been a heated topic in the religious aspect of the world, but in the political aspect as well. Political figures around the world have been faced with the task of figuring out how to handle abortion. Many countries even have laws in place describing what can and cannot be done. There's an article on Malaysian abortion laws. Malaysia has relatively liberal abortion laws in that they permit abortions for both physical and mental health cases. However, abortion remains a taboo subject. The stagnating contraceptive prevalence rate combined with the plunging fertility rate suggests that abortion might be occurring clandestinely. No one can determine which branch is leading in a safe direction because there can always be more than one safe branch. She shows great leadership qualities that she seems to have been born with, a knack at providing authentic leadership, and she has inspired me in my life. Throughout the book she proved over and again that she has leadership qualities and abilities, even from a young age. She first proved this in the beginning of the book with how she took the initiative and decided that the only way to safely get her incline shot was to do it herself, even if she was only seven. Latter she took the initiative after her father's death to wake her mom out of the waking death that she had wrapped herself in for a month after. • 71. The Internet : Addiction To The Internet Today's youth generation, has a strong attachment to the online world. Many adolescents spend most of their time online versus offline. Therefore, one can consider these adolescents as a social network addict, a person who spends a fair amount of time on one or many social platforms. Throughout the three articles, "Social Networking Addiction: An Overview of Preliminary Findings" by Mark Griffiths, "Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship" by Nicole B. Ellison and "Taking Risky Opportunities in Youthful Content Creation: Teenagers' use of Social Networking Sites for Intimacy, Privacy, and Self–expression" by Sonia Livingstone, demonstrate how this addiction has impacted people's communication among people. While there are positive and negative aspects of social networking, the negative aspects tend to overpower the positive ones when it comes to communication. Although it increases a person's ability to contact with others quickly, it also decreased people's ability to have those face to face conversations because they spend a significant amount of time online. Although social networking is addicting, it contributes to an easier, wider, quicker, and broader communication with others. It has been shown through studies that people who are on social sites create more and new contacts from other places. Being connected helps workers "leverage their business" (Ellison 220) to enhance a person's career. Though social networking impacts offline communications ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Importance Of Equality In Society For many years, the fight for equality has either brought peace and unity or hatred. One of the greatest events that happened in the United States was The March on Selma better known as "Bloody Sunday". What started as a peaceful protest, turned into turmoil. Another event was when Dr. Martin Luther King gave the "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington. This speech has been effective for many decades and is a reminder that us people should unite and strive for greatness. Though gave the Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, our nation and other parts of the world continue to bring division and hatred. When will the world know when enough is enough? I believe that society does not owe us equality due to the fact that true equality is impossible. In order to have a perfect society, we would need to have the same level of education, the exact same amount of wealth, and the exact same social status. In other words, we would an utopian society in order to be successful. "Until we get equality in education, we won't have an equal society," said Sonia Sotomayor. Being educated is highly valued within our society. Education is essential to have a better future. Some others believe that education can lead to a better job and which will eventually lead to more money. Without education the world will not function right. Her book explains the challenges that she faced growing up, losing her father at such a young age and working hard to accomplish the great achievements that she has accomplished today. She explains how her upbringing affected how she turned out in life. She explains what it takes for a woman of a Latino origin to sit on the bench, and she explains her reasoning. Sonia shows how she used what she has learnt from her past experiences and how she applied these lessons to the new situations she faced in her life. The book is distributed all over the United States and inspired more and more Latinos every day. In this way, she has helped them by giving them an inspirational story that will be told for years to come, and she will be remembered for much more than her book. When Sonia Sotomayor was 7 years old, she was hospitalized with diabetes and she had to learn how to give herself insulin shots by practicing on an orange. At home, her mother showed her how to light the stove with a match, and together they would fill a pot with water to disinfect the syringe and needle. Sonia was taught to wait for the water to boil and then to wait five minutes more. The daily shots became her way of avoiding conflict between her parents.
