play ground and school in general are stereotypical
places which would be related to bullying.
Plain clothes to show that the boy is just trying to
blend in with the others.
Stereotypical nerd glasses.
People pointing and laughing, humiliating the boy
even further.
Smudged make up to show the girl has been crying,
showing pain and weakness.
The girl is sat on the bedroom floor rather than the bed
which would show weakness or give the idea she has
collapsed to the floor as she is so upset. Showing how
one act affects several people.
The cross on the chain has religious aspects relating
to the point that people are always been watched and
will be punished eventually for their actions.
The words ‘Think before you act’ clearly showing the
message in the whole music video.

to his that it will get better!- We don’t know what he has been
through in that time therefore we cannot judge him.

world on his shoulders and he feels as though he isn’t getting
anywhere in life.
Flashbacks of news broadcasts which show people tackling
and standing up for racism and sexuality showing that this is a
real life problem. Not just in the movies/music.
Flashbacks when the man is married of how his life used when
he was at a party to how it is now he is at a party and free and
able to enjoy himself, how it was the and how it is is now again
showing how it does get better.

Playing spin the bottle which is a well known game that teens of his age would
play, showing how he is trying to fit in.
Collapsing against his bedroom door showing weakness and that maybe all he has
wanted to do all day is cry however he can’t as he can’t tell people why.
Plain clothing – maybe he is trying to fit in.
Slamming the door on the person he should be able to talk to – mum – showing
that he is on his own in his journey.
The boy has a mobile phone which could again show that he has the same
interests as normal teens and that he isn’t unusual because of his sexuality.

Yellow balloons – Yellow is a neutral gender colour relating to song title (same

– this could show that the girl is giving the boy what he
wants rather than what she wants.
Tears – show weakness. Along with the smudged make up
showing that the girl just wants to fit in.
Teddy bear – shows vulnerability and childlike personality.
From the bedroom looking in – the young girl is jealous and
she just wants to fit in like all of the other kids.
The young girl immediately sits down on her bedroom floor
when somebody spots her which shows her fear of getting
bullied.
People staring showing you can't get away from the bullies.
The fact that the girls are taking photos with their 'mobiles'
shows that she will be the latest gossip. If one person sees
the whole school knows.
Bathroom – with scales showing problems within society
which cause young people to feel suicidal (anorexia).
In the bath – showing weakness. People say the bathroom
is the best place to cry as nobody can hear you. Plus the
bathroom is one of the most familiar places linked with
teenage suicide, drowning or cutting themselves.
The razor blade also shows problems within society with
teenagers as it could be showing that in order for the pain
to go away something has to hurt more and the pain she is
going through is so bad that the only way to get rid of it is
to hurt herself.
Dropped razor blade and blood – she is dead.

There are two typical teenager parties consisting of lots
of people, dancing and drinking. The close ups of two
characters in this scene highlight that high school isn't
the same for everybody because of several reasons.
Butterfly relates to an earlier point about turning into
something beautiful.
The weight of the girl is shown through a long shot of
her full body. The fact that the girl is diving straight in
the pool with no care shows that she has overcome it

Analysing Music Videos With A Bullying Themed Narrative

  • 1. Kelly Rowland – Stole CINEMATOGRAPHY: • • • • • • Zoom in of the face to show emotion. Close up of his hand tightening to show pain. Tracking shot of the male walking in slow motion, shows he is tired. Close ups of faces show the reactions of the students. Pan to show the amount of students there are. And who could be responsible. High angle shot show that people are always been watched and will be punished. Religious aspects. SOUND: • Music is played throughout the narrative and performance side. Changing from diegetic and none diegetic. EDITING : • • • Continuity makes the video easier to understand so that the audience can focus on the message. News story effect highlights how real this problem is in society, showing that if we do not tackle bullying these sorts of news stories will be on the ‘real’ news. Slow motion on the girl laughing and pointing, clearly pointing out who is responsible for what happened in the narrative. MISE-EN-SCENE: • • • • • • • • Setting of school toilets, bedroom , lunch hall, school play ground and school in general are stereotypical places which would be related to bullying. Plain clothes to show that the boy is just trying to blend in with the others. Stereotypical nerd glasses. People pointing and laughing, humiliating the boy even further. Smudged make up to show the girl has been crying, showing pain and weakness. The girl is sat on the bedroom floor rather than the bed which would show weakness or give the idea she has collapsed to the floor as she is so upset. Showing how one act affects several people. The cross on the chain has religious aspects relating to the point that people are always been watched and will be punished eventually for their actions. The words ‘Think before you act’ clearly showing the message in the whole music video.
  • 2. Macklemore – Same Love CINEMATOGRAPHY: EDITING : • • • • • • • • Long shot of the usual wedding scene you would see showing that this is real and could be happening. Tracking shot of the back of head again in the work place this shows that the person can have different amounts of respect in the situation and role they are in. Pan of full body whilst laying on the bed showing that everybody is born in the same way. Long shot of five boys playing all of different ethnicity’s showing that this doesn’t matter to the so why should sexuality. Close up of the teenagers face showing no emotion could mean that he is fed up. Close up of the teenagers hands on his head shows that he is stressed out. Close up of teenagers face with hands covering it showing he is possibly ashamed of himself. SOUND: • • The lyrics thoroughly relate to the narrative. Non diegetic sound throughout. MISE-EN-SCENE: • • • • • Pink flowers outside of house shows femininity. Usual ‘house’ scene showing that everybody wants the same things in life. Greenery in the jungle showing where they are free to be themselves and happy with nobody judging them on their own with nobody around. Blue bow tie on the wedding day – blue connotes masculinity. Fire in the background shows danger and passion. • • • • Fast edits showing the boys state of mind and how confused he may be. Fast forwards every third of the song showing him through different stages in his life. Showing people in a similar position to his that it will get better!- We don’t know what he has been through in that time therefore we cannot judge him. Slow motion through the party to show that he may have the world on his shoulders and he feels as though he isn’t getting anywhere in life. Flashbacks of news broadcasts which show people tackling and standing up for racism and sexuality showing that this is a real life problem. Not just in the movies/music. Flashbacks when the man is married of how his life used when he was at a party to how it is now he is at a party and free and able to enjoy himself, how it was the and how it is is now again showing how it does get better. MISE-EN-SCENE: • • • • • • • • • • • A strong relation to religion with the prayers before eating food. Playing spin the bottle which is a well known game that teens of his age would play, showing how he is trying to fit in. Collapsing against his bedroom door showing weakness and that maybe all he has wanted to do all day is cry however he can’t as he can’t tell people why. Plain clothing – maybe he is trying to fit in. Slamming the door on the person he should be able to talk to – mum – showing that he is on his own in his journey. The boy has a mobile phone which could again show that he has the same interests as normal teens and that he isn’t unusual because of his sexuality. Setting of a party showing he is trying to fit in. Yellow balloons – Yellow is a neutral gender colour relating to song title (same love). Balloons (could pop anytime). Photoframe with an old image in it could give the idea that he is reflecting on his life. Pink flowers outside of house shows femininity. Usual ‘house’ scene showing that everybody wants the same
  • 3. P!NK – F***ING PERFECT CINEMATOGRAPHY: ● ● ● ● Slow zoom into the bed with the idea that somebody is watching them – showing that she may be humiliated about this event at a later time. Close up of her face showing that is not enjoying what it happening – even if you don’t enjoy something to fit in people will do just about anything. Close up pink when she is performing showing how different and quirky she looks showing people that it is okay to be different – giving people hope. Close ups showing the reactions and emotion throughout the video. Sound: ● MISE-EN-SCENE: • • • • • Editing: ● ● Flash back to her of a child possibly highlighting how boys made her feel then and how that has not changed still. High angle showing how small the teacher has made her feel by telling her off – also showing humiliation. Dietetic sound to highlight the fact that the girl is just trying to fit in. • • • • • • • Setting of a bedroom to show what is happening in the bed – this could show that the girl is giving the boy what he wants rather than what she wants. Tears – show weakness. Along with the smudged make up showing that the girl just wants to fit in. Teddy bear – shows vulnerability and childlike personality. From the bedroom looking in – the young girl is jealous and she just wants to fit in like all of the other kids. The young girl immediately sits down on her bedroom floor when somebody spots her which shows her fear of getting bullied. People staring showing you can't get away from the bullies. The fact that the girls are taking photos with their 'mobiles' shows that she will be the latest gossip. If one person sees the whole school knows. Bathroom – with scales showing problems within society which cause young people to feel suicidal (anorexia). In the bath – showing weakness. People say the bathroom is the best place to cry as nobody can hear you. Plus the bathroom is one of the most familiar places linked with teenage suicide, drowning or cutting themselves. The razor blade also shows problems within society with teenagers as it could be showing that in order for the pain to go away something has to hurt more and the pain she is going through is so bad that the only way to get rid of it is to hurt herself. Dropped razor blade and blood – she is dead. Art showing that the female is embracing herself.
  • 4. Jessie J – Who’s Laughing Now CINEMATOGRAPHY: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Establishing shot of the school showing where bullying stereotypically takes place. Tracking shot of head making it clear who the main character is. Zoom in of the girls pointing showing who the bullies are. Zoom of facial expression to show how much it hurts and irritates her. Slow motion as she is walking down the corridor showing now she is out of the situation she is calmer. Medium close up Jessie J performing the an edit to medium close up of character showing the link between the two. Close ups of the two's facial expressions which are familiar. Showing that they are 'the same person' Group shot of everybody getting along together showing that when you stand up for yourself the bullying could possibly stop and things will get better. SOUND : ● MISE-EN-SCENE: ● ● ● ● ● ● Editing: ● ● ● ● Fast edits show how many thoughts are running around in her head. Children are quick to forget the latest gossip and move on in a couple of days. Jump cuts and continuity editing reinforce the narrative. Edits from the young girl to Jessie J both of their eyes reinforcing the idea that the young girl is a past Jessie J and she is showing some of the things that Jessie J and to go through as a child. Green laser affects – green connotes nature and life. School bell reinforcing the setting – school (diegetic). ● ● ● The boys and girls both wearing stereotypical gender colours showing their age compared to the main character wearing green, black and purple – showing how individual she is. White background in the corridor with bits of red and black showing danger and individuality Mix of outfits that Jessie J wears showing where the people are not that she is singing about. Destroying all of the props showing her anger and temper which shows how the girl feels and how the people make her feel. School cafeteria with school trays and dinner lady showing places where bulling stereotypically takes place. Same as the school playground and classroom. Close up of the artists middle finger showing that she really doesn't care. Happy, smiley, surrounded by black with school work in the air showing that she feels free around things she likes. The girl has purple on her t shirt, purple connotes royalty. Fire hydrant spraying the girls with white – spraying them with purity and innocence.
  • 5. Katy Perry – Firework CINEMATOGRAPHY: ● ● Establishing shot of the city showing all of the lights relating to the lyrics. Also the pan of the city shows the vast amount of different lights. The lights could represent people showing that everybody is a firework. That can go from something pretty plain to something beautiful and magical. Close up of Katy Perry showing her make up. SOUND: ● ● Non diegetic sound on the narrative however when we see the artist performing it is diegetic sound. The lyrics link to the actions in the narrative mainly because of the special effects – Fireworks. EDITING : ● ● ● ● Special effects with the fireworks shooting out of the characters relating to the lyrics. Continuity editing. Point of view shots to show how they feel and what it is because of. The whole video shows five different scenarios which all show different society problems but they are all linked together with Katy Perry's performance. MISE-EN-SCENE: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Make up is pretty plain but natural and makes the artist look naturally beautiful. City scene – cities are generally very busy. The white dress could show that even though she looks plain she is also a firework showing it doesn't matter who you are. Silver sparkly earing relate to the magical firework theme of the song. The family scene could be showing that you never know what happens behind closed doors. There are two typical teenager parties consisting of lots of people, dancing and drinking. The close ups of two characters in this scene highlight that high school isn't the same for everybody because of several reasons. Butterfly relates to an earlier point about turning into something beautiful. The weight of the girl is shown through a long shot of her full body. The fact that the girl is diving straight in the pool with no care shows that she has overcome it and she doesn't care what others think. Relating to the lyrics.
