Every year thousands of people die due to extreme weather in Europe. In 2008, nearly 25,000 people in Britain died from cold-related illnesses during an extremely cold winter by European standards. A campaign called "The Cold Can Kill" was launched to advise people on surviving freezing temperatures. That same summer, around 23,000 people in Europe died from the heat during temperatures reaching 38°C, particularly in France with nearly 15,000 deaths. Government advice warned that overheating and dehydration from just two days of high temperatures risked irreversible health effects or death.
