Innovation vs. Best Practice – Conflict or Opportunity?
“Best practice” implies doing things in the best possible manner, based on past experience. But we like to think of ourselves as innovators in a dynamic industry – we want to go where no one has gone before. Thus, “best practice” and “innovation” are like oil and water – they don’t easily mix.
How can we, as UX professionals, balance the need for consistency that “best practice” provides, with our on-going mission to improve the quality of our products? How can we create genuine improvements – and when have we been seduced by the evil twins, Fad and Fashion?
“Innovation vs. Best Practice” explores the elements that make up these two ends of the UX spectrum. We’ll take a closer look at the popular definitions of both innovation and best practice – and discover why these are frequently inadequate, misleading, or both. Why is a “standard” not always a “best practice”? And if “invention” can be spontaneous, why is “innovation” always planned?
We’ll also examine some of the worst reasons to innovate, which are also some of the most common, plus the Japanese concept of “chindogu” – “useless innovation.” Perhaps most important of all, we’ll see how User Driven Design helps us avoid harmful innovation in comparison to the more common User Centered Design methodology.

According to a recent Kellogg Foundation report, if an organization builds a culture that systematically supports innovation, the ideas will come. The key is to be deliberate, open to ideas from anywhere, comfortable with unpredictability, and generous in sharing learnings – all great approaches to building a social infrastructure for youth organizing and engagement in Ontario. Young people are already making significant contributions to their communities, and now is the time to sustain and increase that activity.
In March 2009, OTF partnered with the Laidlaw Foundation and Tides Canada to create the conditions that would allow youth-led and youth-serving organizations to connect with each other, share resources and develop new knowledge and practices. 50 young people from diverse sectors and groups agreed on the need for a coordinated provincial model, but where they go from there is deliberately unplanned. No required changes have been identified up front, and no expected outcomes have been proposed. The only certainty is that a strong foundation is being built for future generations. Work through a fascinating case study on this unique process to find out more about:
- the five stages of intentional innovation;
- thinking big and trusting to “wisdom of crowds”;
- the definition of a social infrastructure; and
- the kind of supports needed by youth to strengthen their work

Automation With Humans in Mind: Making Complex Systems Predictable, Reliable ...Brian Troutwine
I believe that our current approach to designing software systems is driving society in a bad direction. In particular, I believe we are creating a society predicated on automation which is oriented to be serviced by humans or, requiring no service, is simply in control of humans. Ignoring the dystopian overtones of this, I argue that this is a technically flawed approach, that such automation is less reliable, less flexible and less robust through time than a system designed with humans as the controlling party in mind. I will argue--with a mix of personal experience, reference to academic literature and historical examples--that complex systems designed with human control in mind are more lasting through time, more technically excellent and just generally more useful. I will further argue that a re-orientation toward human supremacy in computer systems is especially important as we begin to tightly couple western civilization's technology to the internet, being the Internet of Things. I'll talk a bit about the political and social implications, as well, after I've made a purely technical argument.

Innovation is Everyone´s Responsibility and Why Innovation Matters
Here you get my slides from a recent presentation in Turkey where I was asked to provide perspectives on innovation through two important questions / lenses:
Why innovation matters? My key message is that innovation matters if your company wants to stay relevant – and survive. It is that simple. Just consider this piece of information:
At the current churn rate, 75% of the S&P 500 firms in 2011 will be replaced by new firms entering the S&P500 in 2027. There is so much change and it is happening so fast. Innovation can mean many things, but it is a general understanding that it helps you fight irrelevance and helps you drive change rather than becoming a victim of it.
Innovation is everyone´s responsibility. I work with innovation on three levels; incremental, radical and “in between”. The latter is often the most relevant because it can really change things and have a strong impact while companies have a good chance of succeeding with this with the right setup, processes and people. Radical or disruptive innovation is highly desirable, but it is also very difficult to achieve. It requires a lot of luck as well as the right framework and conditions for this luck to happen. Very few organizations succeeds here.
While everyone in an organization should contribute to incremental innovation, I don´t think everyone should work with radical or “in between” innovation – at the same time that is. Most people just have to focus on the getting their daily jobs done. However, every employee should be given an opportunity to contribute to radical and “in between” innovation through corporate programs that could be based on the concept of intrapreneurship, incubators, accelerators or something similar.
When it comes to getting people to understand that everyone actually can contribute to all three levels of innovation, I like to use the Ten Types of Innovation framework by Doblin as it is a simple and visual concept that can open the eyes of the “unusual suspects” when it comes to innovation contribution.
