The document discusses open access and open science. It argues that while open access to content and data is important, solely focusing on this is not enough, and risks allowing proprietary control over scholarly infrastructure. It notes that originally, open access was envisioned as thriving institutional repositories playing a central role for universities, but is now largely achieved through article processing charges paid to commercial publishers. The document advocates for positioning repositories as the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure that is research-centric, open to innovation, and collectively managed by scholars.
Big data and the dark arts - Jisc Digital Media 2015Jisc
There still remains a certain misunderstanding by the very definition of "big data" and the perceived hype around the term. This workshop clarified the concepts and give examples of relevant big data projects.
The continued development of 3D technologies has enabled more affordable and accessible use in a wide range of teaching and research disciplines.
This workshop gave delegates a better understanding of how using 3D technologies can benefit education and research.
Slides from my panel session at Science & Innovation 2015 with STFC DiRAC, HPC Midlands, Francis Crick Institute and UCL. As we move into the expected post-election comprehensive spending review, it is a good time to take stock of some of the innovations that have helped the UK’s institutions and industry to work together to accelerate innovation whilst achieving operating efficiencies over the last few years.
In this session we hear about trend setting initiatives such as Jisc’s shared data centre and equipment sharing initiative, which makes over £200m of capital equipment available for sharing between institutions and with industry, and industrial connectivity to the UK’s Janet network.
The Helix Nebula initiative was presented at EGU 2013 and has continued to expand with more research organisations, providers and services. The hybrid cloud model deployed by Helix Nebula has grown to become a viable approach for provisioning ICT services for research communities from both public and commercial service providers (http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.16001).
The relevance of this approach for all those communities facing societal challenges in explained in a recent EIROforum publication https://zenodo.org/record/34264#.V2ub4jXFn9g. This presentation, given at EGU2016, summarizes the progress of Helix Nebula and explores the essential characteristics of a European Open Science Cloud.
The slides for my talk on "HPC as a service" at the 25th anniversary Machine Evaluation Workshop in December 2014. I cover Jisc's HPC brokerage and related initiatives including our shared data centre, industry connectivity to Janet, our VAT cost sharing group, and our pilot of the Kit-Catalogue equipment sharing database.

Open data engagement: ideas for open data 2.0Leah Lockhart
As a community of interest we understand why open data, smart cities and IoT will create enormous economic, environmental and social benefits and opportunities. But how well do citizens understand these ideas and concepts? What responsibilities do we have to foster understanding and to bridge technical and non-technical communities in the development of open, smart and IoT agendas? We'll look at research and case studies to frame a discussion about the importance of meaningful citizen engagement and involvement in the development of technologies and services that will eventually impact nearly everything in their lives.
Open access - a guide to Jisc's evolving offer to universities - Jisc Digital...Jisc
Universities are implementing open access to research publications, partly in response to policies from the UK funding and research councils.
This aims to provide the “big picture” of how Jisc is supporting universities in this challenge, both now and into the future.
This project presentation was presented in the D-CENT launch event Democracy reboot: re-imagining democracy and currency in Europe held @Nesta, London.
The goals of this meeting/informal discussion are:
(a) To deliver a short presentation of the green-paper focused on the Brazilian OER Project. Abstract:
" The State and Challenges of OER in Brazil. by, Carolina Rossini
The paper map the Open Educational Resources efforts in Brazil, understanding the role they play in the educational context and if they are developed under a consistent educational policy. Questions of how educational policy is favorable to OER, and how much public funding flows into educational materials (mainly textbooks) are discussed. The paper starts with a brief introduction of how the concept of Open Educational Resources dialogues with the concept of development. The second portion explores the state of education in Brazil, its policy governance, structures and institutions. The third section is focused on an analysis of Brazilian educational projects as fulfilling or not the concept of Open Educational Resources as understood by UNESCO and under the principles of the Cape Town Declaration on Open Education. The fourth section is focused on the issue of textbooks in Brazil, analyzing public policies and governmental purchase programs, and also the challenges faced for the equivalent to the K-12 level and to the college level, also touching on the flow of public investments into the production and distribution of textbooks. Finally, a series of policy recommendations is drawn for further discussion."
(b) To develop discussion around the validity of the green-paper recommendations as recommendations that are horizontal to different countries, building upon the Cape Town Declaration;
(c) To discuss the role played by copyright and open licensing;
(d) Open X Free: strategies and benefits in diferent national contexts;
(e) To build collaboration among country projects.

IC-SDV 2019: Semantic e-Science - The Future of Information Provision in the ...Dr. Haxel Consult
With the digital revolution the provision of scientific information is fully entered in a new mode of operation.
The fast advances of technologies is transforming the way of providing information towards scientists and opening new opportunities.
Data and Information storage has moved from a paper-based, manual affair to an activity in which computers are necessary.
As a result, a vast amount of scientific information is being daily produced and collected, a research organization has not enough resources to collect everything.
With emphasizing data-intensive thinking e-Science is moving towards data Intensive technologies and is becoming a new technology driver and requires the re-thinking of infrastructure architecture components, solutions and processes for Scientific Information Provision.
A new systematic approach for tackling the challenges of data-intensive computing, providing scientists and decision makers with practical tools for dealing and exploring the needed data and information.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE SAMPLE RETURN.Sérgio Sacani
The return of a sample of near-surface atmosphere from Mars would facilitate answers to several first-order science questions surrounding the formation and evolution of the planet. One of the important aspects of terrestrial planet formation in general is the role that primary atmospheres played in influencing the chemistry and structure of the planets and their antecedents. Studies of the martian atmosphere can be used to investigate the role of a primary atmosphere in its history. Atmosphere samples would also inform our understanding of the near-surface chemistry of the planet, and ultimately the prospects for life. High-precision isotopic analyses of constituent gases are needed to address these questions, requiring that the analyses are made on returned samples rather than in situ.
This presentation explores a brief idea about the structural and functional attributes of nucleotides, the structure and function of genetic materials along with the impact of UV rays and pH upon them.
Nutraceutical market, scope and growth: Herbal drug technologyLokesh Patil
As consumer awareness of health and wellness rises, the nutraceutical market—which includes goods like functional meals, drinks, and dietary supplements that provide health advantages beyond basic nutrition—is growing significantly. As healthcare expenses rise, the population ages, and people want natural and preventative health solutions more and more, this industry is increasing quickly. Further driving market expansion are product formulation innovations and the use of cutting-edge technology for customized nutrition. With its worldwide reach, the nutraceutical industry is expected to keep growing and provide significant chances for research and investment in a number of categories, including vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and herbal supplements.
Observation of Io’s Resurfacing via Plume Deposition Using Ground-based Adapt...Sérgio Sacani
Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive
optics at visible wavelengths.

22. To position repositories as the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication, on top
of which layers of value added services will be deployed, thereby transforming the system, making it more research-centric, open to
and supportive of innovation, while also collectively managed by the scholarly community.

25. Technology companies develop proprietary
knowledge networks as key business
technologies today. However, because these
networks are proprietary and expensive to
construct, government, academia, small
businesses, and nonprofits do not have access
to them. In contrast, an open knowledge
network (OKN) would be available to all
stakeholders, including the researchers
who will help push this technology further.
An OKN requires a nonproprietary, public–
private development effort that spans the
entire data science community and will result in
an open, shared infrastructure.
