NFTA Metro Route Restructuring
Presented by: James Morrell, Manager, Service Planning, NFTA
Hal Morse, Executive Director, Greater Buffalo-Niagara Region Transportation Council
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) implemented a major route restructuring
initiative on October 31, 2010; a plan which required extensive organizational planning and community participation. The restructuring included adjusting service levels to make the entire system more efficient and increase passenger revenues. Buses now run more frequently over the heaviest used routes, and less frequently over lesser-used portions. This presentation will outline the steps needed to restructure service to be more efficient and cost effective.
Transit-oriented development (TOD): Integrating rail and commercial developme...Atkins
Atkins' technical director Jason Hutchings explores the ways in which cities across the world can gain maximum benefit from their investment in transport, commercial and civic projects through transit oriented development (TOD). TOD facilitates and encourages the use of public transport and provides alternative revenue streams for transport providers and operators, reducing their reliance on state funding for capital investment and operation/maintenance costs. It means transit systems are more popular, accessible and better connected for the commuting population, and commercial property development can be integrated and benefit from such a holistic approach to critical city centre locations. But TOD is not without its challenges. Atkins illustrates the issues and solutions across a range of international projects.
This presentation was first delivered in May 2013 at the 3rd Annual Modern Railways Conference, Singapore.

A graph is a data structure composed of vertices/dots and edges/lines. A graph database is a software system used to persist and process graphs. The common conception in today's database community is that there is a tradeoff between the scale of data and the complexity/interlinking of data. To challenge this understanding, Aurelius has developed Titan under the liberal Apache 2 license. Titan supports both the size of modern data and the modeling power of graphs to usher in the era of Big Graph Data. Novel techniques in edge compression, data layout, and vertex-centric indices that exploit significant orders are used to facilitate the representation and processing of a single atomic graph structure across a multi-machine cluster. To ensure ease of adoption by the graph community, Titan natively implements the TinkerPop 2 Blueprints API. This presentation will review the graph landscape, Titan's techniques for scale by distribution, and a collection of satellite graph technologies to be released by Aurelius in the coming summer months of 2012.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization's Low Carbon Transport Project hosted a workshop seminar on sustainable transport and mobility for cities in Durban on the 30th of March 2017. Editor's Notes
Amtrak is 18% more efficient than flying or driving.
Unlike commercial aviation, which mostly uses highly refined jet fuel This method of slowing trains is more fuel-efficient than braking with power applied.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ latest report issued in 2009, Amtrak’s market share of intercity transportation is one tenth of one percent of the national transportation output. The long hauls are where the money is made; the short hauls are done for customer convenience and as feeders, and paid for by the profits from the long hauls. higher revenue potential
Amtrak’s current business plan revolves around the most expensive types of trains to operate - short distance corridor trains - with the lowest return on investment.
