Secondary Research Project
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a shareable educational
resource about a particular structural inequality. In it, you will 1) describe the structural
inequality and 2) recommend at least 1 specific action people can take to help disrupt,
dismantle, or otherwise work against that structure. There are 3 major components to this
project: the resource itself, a 2-3 page reflection piece, and a Works Cited. Instructions
for each can be found below.
In doing this assignment, you’ll get the chance to:
• Synthesize information and ideas you’ve come across in the
readings, conversations, and assignments.
• Reflect on how education can be a crucial component of being an
active, engaged member of your community and of society as a
whole.
• Produce a concrete resource that you can put out into the world
about your topic.
Educational Resource Instructions
For the resource itself, I’m giving you a fair amount of freedom. You have to create an
educational resource, but the exact form it takes is really up to you. Some options people
have done in the past:
• Write an editorial/article about your topic that could be submitted
to a newspaper or other periodical. (You don’t have to actually
submit it.)
• Create a brochure about your topic that can be printed and
distributed.
• Create a short zine about your topic that can be printed and
distributed.
• Produce a short podcast or video about your topic.
• Create a blog post (with links for more info) about your topic.
• Create a website about your topic.
• Create an educational board game or video game about your topic.
• Something else that you come up with (and get approved by me)
While you have a lot of freedom for the form of the project, there are certain criteria that
all projects must meet. To get full credit your resource must:
• Be targeted towards a particular audience (likely a particular
group of stakeholders for the issue)—Think about whom you want
to reach. Who is likely to care about the issue if they learned about
it? Who might be willing and able to take action?
o Your target audience should influence the form and
language of the project. For example, you probably
wouldn’t create a video game if your target audience is
Idaho congresspeople (or maybe you would?).
• Contain the following components
1. A short background on the situation. Explain what is going
on, how it’s unequal, and why we should care about it.
2. A description of the communities that are most impacted by
the issue and how they are impacted. This is related to the
previous component; one way to make people care about an
issue is to show them the harm it is causing to a particular
group of people.
3. A description of at least 1 important cultural story or belief
that helps sustain the conditions of inequality. As Schwalbe

4. Final Project: The final project is the culmination of the work you have done all term. You will include all writing you have done thus far as a single document.

2. What is a “compelling ethical problem with a global scope”?
a. “Compelling”: For a topic to be compelling means that it demands the attention of others. That is, because or if it isn’t addressed, then some terrible or injustice is occurring or will occur. One way to test your topic is to ask yourself two questions: 1) Does this topic matter to me?; and 2) Do I believe that this topic should matter to other people?
b. “Ethical”: How does this issue demonstrate either a failure to fulfill an important obligation or a failure to achieve a good or better outcome?
c. “With a global scope”: The topic does not need to touch everyone in the world, but it does need to show how an issue can touch different parts of the globe or is an example of a problem that we might find in several places throughout the world. For example, one nation’s struggle with immigration might be seen in many other nations.

Social Justice Action Project Proposal
Purpose:
This assignment requires you to propose an activism project (a) designed to address a social justice issue and (b) that relates to a significant issue or topic addressed during the semester. You will select a social justice issue and develop a proposal that addresses your goals for social transformation related to the specific issue you’ve selected. Unless your instructor indicates otherwise, you have two options: (1) you may propose a personal act of activism involving only yourself; (2) or you may propose a collective act that involves more people than just yourself. (See the next paragraph for examples of each type.) Regardless of your choice, the action you propose should be narrow and must be designed to address and/or bring awareness to the issue. You will produce a proposal that provides your rationale for the project, based on concepts discussed in required course readings. However, you will not actually implement the project (although you may do so in the future if you’d like). We recommend that you focus on a social-justice action that is local and manageable, something that you would actually be able to implement in the near future.
Types of proposals:
Collective social-justice proposals can propose a creative product (e.g., an art exhibition, poetry collection, fashion show, music CD, or film), an activist organization (e.g., a nonprofit organization or association), or an activist event (e.g., a political march or demonstration). Personal Action Social-Justice projects can also focus on a creative product, an activist organization, or an activist event; examples include creating an information/resource sheet that can be shared on social media, giving a short presentation at an organization you are a member of (or have access to), creating a YouTube video regarding your social justice issue, or volunteering at a local organization that addresses your social justice issue.
The proposals must address a specific issue explored during the semester in our course. For example, a creative project proposal might propose to develop a series of murals for Denton or another local city, or a proposal for an organization might involve starting a nonprofit birthing center in a local city for low-income mothers. The opportunities are endless, so be creative!
Assignment:
After selecting a social justice issue to serve as the focus for your activism, you should identify and analyze specific course readings that can be related to your selection. You should also research existing creative products, activist organizations, or activist events that already address your issue in some way, so that you can explain how your project is similar to and/or different from others. You may also, if you wish, do additional research in library databases of journal articles.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacks
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
