For the resource itself, I’m giving you a fair amount of freedom. You have to create an
educational resource, but the exact form it takes is really up to you. Some options people

As we begin this journey together over the next eight weeks, it is imperative to understand the key concepts incorporated within the course, as well as the overall purpose of taking the course. As President John F. Kennedy has been quoted, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”
Service-learning versus volunteering: Aren’t they one and the same? The correct answer is “no” as there are differences. Volunteering allows for activities which place the emphasis on the recipient. (Providing meals at the local homeless shelter places the emphasis on the recipient being fed for that particular meal.) Service-learning activities differ from volunteering in the INTENT involved. This intent with service-learning utilizes intellectual capacities which in turn address problems within the community. (There is a growing number of homeless individuals in the community – what activities can be performed to address this problem?)
Following this example, we can see that service learning allows us to become an educated community member and problem-solver through serving and collaboratively reflecting on the meaning and purpose of the activities put into that service. The entire purpose of service-learning is therefore learning to grow in skills and knowledge because these assets are being brought to real-world problems.
As we evaluate these skills, we need to have the understanding of civic capacity. This is knowing how to APPLY our knowledge and skills to the community challenges we are analyzing. This capacity is developed when we are able to look deeper at the connection between academic knowledge and experience.
Putting each of these concepts together, service-learning, therefore impacts our community positively in order to address societal and political challenges, and generate the positive changes necessary for both individuals and within the system we are looking to change.Preview of Your Final Project

Overview
Organizations move us. We identify as members of organizations easily (I’m a Husker, a Tri-Delt, a Soprano, a
farmer, a firefighter), and it makes sense—we spend most of our time living, breathing, and organizing with others.
Organizations are the places where we play (sports leagues, hobbies), where we work (businesses, non-profits,
schools), where we recharge (places of non/worship and mindfulness), where we heal (hospitals), and as this paper
analyzes, where we change or negotiate problematic aspects of society (social movements, political parties, charities
or any of the previously noted groups). In this project, we are asking you to focus your attention on how
organizations negotiate and change (inequalities) of power.
Embodying the ethic and metaphor of the “Organizational Detective,” you are tasked with questioning, tracing, and
analyzing how an organization of your choice attempts social change and the communication about or through
which that action functions. This isn’t an easy task; social change can be a complicated, messy, and sometimes
awkward topic—which is exactly why we need to explore the potentials and pitfalls that arise when this work is
done! This perspective is a bit of a shift in how we might typically think of organizations generally—instead of
asking you to look at the communication used to manage an organization or drive efficiency, we want you to think
about the social change communication that is organizing the people, objects, and purposes of this group, as
well as the power imbued within those actions and its many consequences.
Though this document spends most of its efforts describing what this organizational analysis is, we want to take a
moment to describe what it is not. This is not an organizational biography. Though the history of a company or

Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few
authors who published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming,
particularly agricultural journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors
often placed the farming literature they were studying into an historical context by
discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in which the literature was
published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors discuss journals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find much discussion about another
important source of farming knowledge: farming handbooks. My goal in this paper is to
bring this source into the agricultural literature discussion by connecting three
agricultural handbooks from the nineteenth century with nineteenth century agricultural
history.
To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four main sections, two of
which have sub-sections. In the first section, I provide an account of three important
events in nineteenth century agricultural history: population and technological changes,
the distribution of scientific new knowledge, and farming’s influence on education. In the
second section, I discuss three nineteenth century farming handbooks in
connection with the important events described in the first section. I end my paper

As we begin this journey together over the next eight weeks, it is imperative to understand the key concepts incorporated within the course, as well as the overall purpose of taking the course. Service-learning versus volunteering: Aren’t they one and the same? The correct answer is “no” as there are differences. Volunteering allows for activities which place the emphasis on the recipient. (Providing meals at the local homeless shelter places the emphasis on the recipient being fed for that particular meal.) Service-learning activities differ from volunteering in the INTENT involved. This intent with service-learning utilizes intellectual capacities which in turn address problems within the community. (There is a growing number of homeless individuals in the community – what activities can be performed to address this problem?)
Following this example, we can see that service learning allows us to become an educated community member and problem-solver through serving and collaboratively reflecting on the meaning and purpose of the activities put into that service. The entire purpose of service-learning is therefore learning to grow in skills and knowledge because these assets are being brought to real-world problems.
As we evaluate these skills, we need to have the understanding of civic capacity. This is knowing how to APPLY our knowledge and skills to the community challenges we are analyzing. This capacity is developed when we are able to look deeper at the connection between academic knowledge and experience.
Putting each of these concepts together, service-learning, therefore impacts our community positively in order to address societal and political challenges, and generate the positive changes necessary for both individuals and within the system we are looking to change.Preview of Your Final Project

Overview
Organizations move us. We identify as members of organizations easily (I’m a Husker, a Tri-Delt, a Soprano, a
farmer, a firefighter), and it makes sense—we spend most of our time living, breathing, and organizing with others.
Organizations are the places where we play (sports leagues, hobbies), where we work (businesses, non-profits,
schools), where we recharge (places of non/worship and mindfulness), where we heal (hospitals), and as this paper
analyzes, where we change or negotiate problematic aspects of society (social movements, political parties, charities
or any of the previously noted groups). In this project, we are asking you to focus your attention on how
organizations negotiate and change (inequalities) of power.
Embodying the ethic and metaphor of the “Organizational Detective,” you are tasked with questioning, tracing, and
analyzing how an organization of your choice attempts social change and the communication about or through
which that action functions. This isn’t an easy task; social change can be a complicated, messy, and sometimes
awkward topic—which is exactly why we need to explore the potentials and pitfalls that arise when this work is
done! This perspective is a bit of a shift in how we might typically think of organizations generally—instead of
asking you to look at the communication used to manage an organization or drive efficiency, we want you to think
about the social change communication that is organizing the people, objects, and purposes of this group, as
well as the power imbued within those actions and its many consequences.
Though this document spends most of its efforts describing what this organizational analysis is, we want to take a
moment to describe what it is not. This is not an organizational biography. Though the history of a company or
group and its inception are important generally, the goal of this paper is to track down and analyze the current
communication and work that the organization is doing about/for social change specifically. Furthermore, this is not

Toward a Recovery of Nineteenth Century Farming Handbooks
While researching texts written about nineteenth century farming, I found a few
authors who published books about the literature of nineteenth century farming,
particularly agricultural journals, newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures. These authors
often placed the farming literature they were studying into an historical context by
discussing the important events in agriculture of the year in which the literature was
published (see Demaree, for example). However, while these authors discuss journals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and brochures, I could not find much discussion about another
important source of farming knowledge: farming handbooks. My goal in this paper is to
bring this source into the agricultural literature discussion by connecting three
agricultural handbooks from the nineteenth century with nineteenth century agricultural
history.
To achieve this goal, I have organized my paper into four main sections, two of
which have sub-sections. In the first section, I provide an account of three important
events in nineteenth century agricultural history: population and technological changes,
the distribution of scientific new knowledge, and farming’s influence on education. In the
second section, I discuss three nineteenth century farming handbooks in
connection with the important events described in the first section. I end my paper

Example Situation:
I have asked a few friends to help me with a little experiment. I have asked them to put a white rose in a small vase filled almost to the top with water and add a few drops of blue food coloring. They are to make observations while the flower changes.
What has occurred?
We have put it in water and left it for a few hours.
When we came back we all had the same outcome. The flower had turned blue.
This is what we will call
Scientific law.
It is the happenings of a certain experiment. If you put a flower in colored water the flower will take on the color of the water. It simply says WHAT will happen.
But
why
did it occur?
My friends and I believe it is because the colored water is drawn up through the flower's stem.
This is what we call a
scientific theory.
It tries to explain WHY something occurs.
A scientific theory is not less true than a scientific law. However, a scientific law is a direct result of the results of the experiment. Since in order to become a scientific law it must be proven many times, it is unlikely that somehow new results will occur and a law will be disproved. However, a scientific theory is based on
interpretation
of experimental results. The results are not usually proven wrong, just the conclusions drawn from the observations. As new and different information becomes available we may realize that we did not draw the correct conclusion and we need to adjust our theory accordingly.
Just a Theory
When arguing against a scientific theory, like the theory of evolution, people will sometimes say, "but its just a theory." That means that they do not understand that scientific theories are the strongest explanations offered by science. Theories are not scientific laws "in training," like how bills can be ratified into laws. A scientific theory does not ever turn into a scientific law. Instead laws describe what happens, frequently with an equation, while theories explain why it happens. Theories are built on the work on many scientists who conduct many different experiments. Not all of these experiments have the same goal, but through their combined work theories are constantly revised.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The paper should describe what you learned from the multi- staged paper project. Be honest and thoughtful about the various components as you worked your way through them. Writing a summary paper about what you learned from class helps your writing and your summarizing skills, two of the most important skills you will acquire in college. This assignment differs from a typical summary,because in addition to presenting the main points of the class in your own words, you will need to reflect on what lessons you learned and why you found them particularly useful. Finally, explore one organization’s efforts to deal with the social problem. Address the following questions for the “claims-making” organization’s efforts: What is the name of the organization? What is its mission? What does it identify as the causes and solutions to the social
