Role & contributions of ethiopian cs os in legal aid (english)Ghetnet Metiku
This document discusses the role of Ethiopian civil society organizations in providing legal aid services. It outlines how CSOs have historically engaged in legal aid through programs providing legal advice, counseling, representation and education. Major CSOs have assisted thousands of people annually. However, the 2009 Charities and Societies Proclamation has impacted CSOs' ability to provide legal aid by restricting foreign funding and certain legal activities. This has led to reduced coverage and CSO disengagement from legal aid. Potential options are considered to enhance CSO involvement within the current framework, such as clarifying the definition of legal aid and costs.

This document discusses the transformation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) into the African Union (AU) and its implications for human rights in Africa. It provides background on the establishment and objectives of the OAU and AU. It then compares their approaches to human rights by examining their recognition of rights, normative frameworks, institutional arrangements, and impact. Key points include that the AU Constitution explicitly recognizes human rights, additional protocols have been adopted to strengthen protections, and the AU has the right to intervene in member states during human rights crises, unlike the non-interference policy of the OAU. However, fully assessing the impact remains difficult given the many contextual factors involved.
Protection of minority rights under the african human rights systemGhetnet Metiku
The document discusses the protection of minority rights under international and African human rights law. It provides definitions of minorities from various UN studies and notes that the ICCPR protects the rights of persons belonging to minorities to enjoy their own culture, religion, and language. In Africa, minority issues emerged with colonialism, but the OAU and African Commission initially gave little attention to them due to principles of non-interference and sovereignty. The document outlines relevant provisions in the African Charter and notes recent efforts through the African Commission to address minority issues.
The Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) assists victims of crimes addressed by the International Criminal Court. It was established in 2002 when the Rome Statute created the ICC. The TFV is governed by a 5-member board elected by States Parties and oversees programs that provide psychological support, material assistance, and rehabilitation to victims in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The TFV's funding comes from voluntary contributions as well as money collected from Court-ordered fines and forfeitures against convicted individuals.
The Legal Services Corporation: From Inception to the Present Dayjoe moro
The document discusses the history of government funding for legal aid services for low-income individuals in the United States. It describes how the Legal Services Corporation was established in 1974 to replace the Office of Economic Opportunity's legal services programs and initially received higher funding, but that funding has significantly declined since the 1980s under Republican presidents and legislation imposing restrictions in 1996. The cuts have resulted in many legal aid offices closing and only 20% of the needed legal services for low-income people being met currently.
The document discusses the concept of federalism and the division of power between the US national and state governments. Under federalism, power is divided so that both levels of government can act directly on the people. The national government has delegated powers listed in the Constitution like taxation and defense. States have reserved powers over matters like health and welfare. There are also concurrent powers shared between levels like borrowing and establishing courts. The Supreme Court resolves conflicts between the national and state governments based on the principle of national supremacy.

Systemic Analysis of the Levels of Protection Guaranteed in Regional Human Ri...ijtsrd
The continental division of humanity in the era of contemporary globalization has given rise to several regional systems of human rights protection that offer nuanced guarantees. It goes without saying that these regional mechanisms constitute the highest and strongest protection of human rights insofar as they involve jurisdictional institutions under the provisions of regional instruments. It is therefore necessary to analyze the legal differences that can be observed from one regional system to another in order to evaluate the quality of the protection guaranteed in each. Mohamed El Bachir Labiad "Systemic Analysis of the Levels of Protection Guaranteed in Regional Human Rights Law" Published in International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development (ijtsrd), ISSN: 2456-6470, Volume-5 | Issue-4 , June 2021, URL: https://www.ijtsrd.compapers/ijtsrd42480.pdf Paper URL: https://www.ijtsrd.comother-scientific-research-area/public-relations/42480/systemic-analysis-of-the-levels-of-protection-guaranteed-in-regional-human-rights-law/mohamed-el-bachir-labiad

Key achievements include passage of new laws and policies, increased accountability mechanisms, and strategic plans to eliminate violence against women.
The document summarizes Republic Act 10368, which provides reparation and recognition for victims of human rights violations during the Marcos regime. It establishes a Human Rights Victims' Claims Board to determine compensation amounts based on points assigned to different human rights violations. It also creates a commission to establish memorials, museums, and libraries to honor victims and ensure the history of martial law is documented and taught in schools. The act aims to recognize heroes and provide remedies to victims or their families for deaths, injuries, and damages suffered under the Marcos dictatorship.

This document summarizes the key points in the peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front from 1997-2014. It discusses the agreements reached, including the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro in 2014. However, it notes that the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law faces limitations within the constitutional process and risks further diluting the autonomy envisioned in the peace agreements. In particular, it argues the draft laws do not grant full economic and political control over Bangsamoro resources and territory to the Bangsamoro people. Overall, the document suggests the Moro people's fight for self-determination remains ongoing.

South Africa submitted a report to the UN Human Rights Council on its efforts to promote and protect human rights. It has made progress through democratic reforms, establishing independent institutions, enacting anti-discrimination and other laws, and ratifying many international human rights treaties. However, challenges remain due to apartheid's legacy, including unequal access to housing, education and healthcare. South Africa is working to progressively realize all rights and fulfill its human rights obligations through legislative and policy reforms while taking into account its available resources.

The document discusses issues with Iraq's 2005 budget for the Ministry of Interior and improvements made for the 2006 budget.
The 2005 budget lacked credibility due to inaccurate personnel numbers and failure to account for changes made by the Coalition. There was an absence of communication between budget advisors and the field. The budget failed to capture new expenses for decentralized operations.
Lessons from 2005 included the need to decentralize budgeting, build capacity in provinces, anticipate future force levels, and shift advising to entities able to introduce new budgeting practices. Measures for 2006 included new budgeting protocols and guidance from the Coalition Police Partnership Program.
The 2006 budget reconciled with revised models and captured costs excluded previously. Improved
Memorandum in August 2009 to the Multi-National Security Transition Command-IRAQNed McDonnell III, CFA PMP
This document represents the contents of a memorandum draws from unclassified information only; it represented closing thoughts on a short tour in IRAQ in 2009 as a strategic planner with M.N.S.T.C.-I. (by then under the command of General Odierno). There are nine changes made subsequent to its release. Eight are grammatical corrections (because I am the world's worst proof-reader of my own work) and two sentences underscored. Those sentences indicate that two years before the fact, there was at least one USG official (and, I am sure, many more) who foresaw the eventual withdrawal of forces from the IRAQ.

The poem "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins is about the difficulties of analyzing and interpreting poetry. It discusses how poetry defies a reductive, formulaic approach and instead requires open-minded engagement with its complexities and ambiguities. The poem warns students against trying to reduce poems to their basic themes and symbols, arguing this misses the richness and nuances poetry offers.

This summary provides 3 examples of logical fallacies found in the movie Fallacy:
1. Faulty cause: The example assumes breaking a mirror caused a car accident later, when the real cause could be something else like poor driving skills.
2. Hasty generalization: It generalizes that all movie stars are rude based on one experience with Dwayne Johnson, when more evidence is needed to make that claim.
3. Appeal to tradition: This fallacy is not fully explained, but seems to refer to appealing to how things were done traditionally without considering whether the tradition is valid.
International development law emerged in the 1960s as a way to apply development theories to developing countries and justify foreign aid programs. It focused on economic growth and viewed law as a tool for development. This first phase failed due to assumptions about legal pluralism and the role of courts. The second phase in the 1980s promoted neoliberal policies of privatization, deregulation, and free markets through the World Bank and IMF. While increasing growth, this exacerbated inequality. The third ongoing phase sees development as holistic and inclusive of human rights and sustainability, with law both enabling and constituted by development.
Public finance involves the collection and spending of government funds through taxes, expenditures, budget preparation, and borrowing. Money is essential for governments to fund activities like education, defense, health, and economic development. The annual budget process involves preparation, legislative approval, and auditing of expenses. Budgets estimate annual income and expenses and aim to encourage wise use of funds. Government revenue comes from taxes on income, property, imports, licenses, fines, fees, foreign loans, and bonds. Strict rules limit taxation to public purposes and require uniform and fair taxes.
The document proposes a charter for a transnational nation-state community that would exist among existing nation states and be governed by international human rights laws and treaties. It asserts that as the majority of UN member states have ratified these treaties, they would apply to the transnational community as well. The community would handle internal affairs but be subject to oversight by the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court to ensure respect for due process and human rights. Signing the charter would declare independence for the transnational nation while still abiding by international law.
The President's Cabinet-US GOVERNMENT CHPT 6Anna Pizelo

Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who manipulate countries into large loans from organizations like the World Bank that they can never repay, ensuring control over the country's resources. Through fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, and other means, they funnel money from loans back to corporations in developed countries, leaving the recipient nations deeply in debt. As an example, John Perkins details how EHMs in the 1960s and 70s helped loan billions to Ecuador on the condition that most of the money support US firms, leaving the country today with $16 billion in debt and most of its citizens in deepening poverty and unemployment. The global EHM system has trapped much of the developing world under $2
Human Rights Report of the Independent Expert on the Situation in Haiti Miche...Stanley Lucas
In the present report, the independent expert emphasizes that the rule of law, in the broadest sense of the term, is a critical element that cuts across all aspects of development in Haiti.
On civil and political rights, the independent expert describes the progress made and the obstacles encountered in regard to elections, reform of the justice system, the Legal Service Training College, and the fight against corruption. He then analyses the state of the prison system, the use of extended pretrial detention and the police service. He also reviews the situation of children, particularly with regard to adoption, the “restavek” and victims of trafficking, in order to draw attention to the need for more stringent laws and for juvenile courts.
Report of the independent expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti, G...Stanleylucas
Gustavo Gallón, independent expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti, appointed in June 2013 by the Human Rights Council, proposes shock treatment for certain key aspects of the human rights situation in the country, which he considers to be very complex but not insurmountable. The independent expert carried out a mission to Haiti in September 2013, to Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

AHMR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed online journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects (socio-economic, political, legislative and developmental) of Human Mobility in Africa. This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
