Ameland is a small island off the coast of Friesland province in the Netherlands with around 3,500 residents living across its 4 villages. The island is approximately 268.5 square kilometers in size and consists mostly of sand dunes, with over 100 kilometers of cycling paths. Ameland has a long history of human settlement dating back to 850 AD and remains a popular tourist destination, especially for Germans who visit the beaches and natural areas like the Het Oerd nature reserve.
