The deforestation rate in Somalia has increased dramatically since the collapse of its government in 1991 due to high demand for charcoal exports, particularly from Gulf States. Over 112,000 metric tons of charcoal were produced in 2000, increasing to 150,000 metric tons by 2005, with 80% exported mainly to Saudi Arabia and UAE. Thousands of trees are burned daily for this charcoal, threatening Somalia's environment and livelihoods. The Somali Environmental Protection Alliance is working to address this issue and encourage restoration of damaged lands.
