Dr. Alvaro Sobrinho, Chairman of PEI, presented to the UN General Assembly on the organization's work promoting science, technology, and innovation in Africa. PEI believes three pathways are needed: 1) creating new higher education and research centers of excellence through partnerships between African and international universities; 2) developing cutting-edge technologies in and for Africa by incubating innovations; 3) publicly advocating for STI to governments. PEI does this work because tertiary education enrollment and scientific development in Africa are far behind other regions, and Africa suffers hugely from brain drain. PEI partners with leading scientists, academics, politicians, and businesses globally to champion the role of STI in Africa's development.

The African Story of Open Research - Nozuko Zukie Hlwatika
This presentation by Nozuko Zukie Hlwatika was part of OpenCon 2017's Regional Models for Open Research and Open Education panel.
In her talk, Zukie covered Open Science, particularly Open Data in Africa. This was done from the perspective of the African Open Science Platform initiative. The status of Open Data in Africa was discussed through the lenses of policy, infrastructure, capacity building and incentives as per the initiatives focus areas. A list of countries actively involved in the advancement of Open Data was highlighted as well as those that need greater intervention. Possible Marginalised models for promoting open science in Africa were shared with the audience.

But the competence of the African Union has been put to question. The inability of the AU to resolve the conflict in central African Republic, the continuous terrorist attacks in Nigeria by Boko-Haram, in Kenya and Somalia by Al-Shabba, has led the international community to focus on insecurity in the African continent. Though this change from OAU to AU the AU still faces some challenges. Nonetheless it has registered some success.

NITheP Annual report 2013
The annual report summarizes NITheP's activities from January to December 2013. Some key highlights include:
- NITheP supported 8 workshops involving local students and researchers through its Request for Proposal system. It also supported 10 months of international visitor time.
- One of NITheP's major outreach activities was an undergraduate workshop in theoretical physics held at the University of Venda.
- Research outputs declined slightly in 2013 due to staff vacancies, but were still at an acceptable level according to the director.
- The associate network continued growing and now includes 69 associates from various South African institutions.

Direct smelting method
This document describes direct smelting as an alternative to mercury amalgamation for artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Ghana. Direct smelting involves melting gold-bearing concentrates using borax, sodium carbonate and silica sand as fluxes to separate pure gold. The technique was tested in the lab and field and found to recover over 99% of gold, compared to 88-97% for amalgamation. It is presented as an effective, simple, quick and affordable non-toxic alternative suitable for small-scale operations. Challenges to adoption include ensuring continued availability and affordability of equipment kits for miners.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
