Concurrency control methods like locking prevent data inconsistencies when multiple transactions access the same data concurrently. There are two main concurrency control techniques: single-version concurrency control (SVCC) and multi-version concurrency control (MVCC). SVCC uses locking and only maintains a single version of each record, while MVCC creates new versions of records during updates to allow concurrent read and write operations without locking. MVCC has better performance for environments with frequent transactions.

A transaction is a logical unit of work that consists of one or more SQL statements. Transaction management controls concurrency and maintains data consistency by ensuring transactions have the properties of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID). Transaction durability guarantees that committed transactions persist even after a system failure by writing log records to disk before acknowledging the commit. There is a tradeoff between high durability, which ensures data safety but reduces performance, and lower durability, which improves performance but reduces safety in the event of certain failures.

Space in disk tablespaces is allocated in 256K extents to tables, with pages having a status of free or used. DELETE changes used page status to free within a table, while TRUNCATE returns all allocated pages to the tablespace as free for any table to use. MOVE has the same effect as DELETE by keeping pages free within the table. Compaction cannot be done on disk tables.

This document describes a volatile tablespace in Oracle Database. A volatile tablespace stores data only in memory with no disk-resident components like checkpoint image files or logs. This provides the highest performance for data manipulation language operations compared to other tablespaces because there is no disk input/output or logging involved.

Memory tablespaces store memory-resident data and use checkpoint image files on disk to recover that data if needed. Space in a memory tablespace is allocated in 32KB pages that have a status of either free or used. When data is deleted from a table, the empty pages' status changes to free within that table but they are not returned to the tablespace until compaction. Truncating a table returns all its pages to the tablespace as free.

A database consists of one or more tablespaces, with each tablespace made up of segments, extents, and pages stored either in memory or on disk. Altibase provides different types of tablespaces classified by data properties like memory or disk, and by time of creation as either system or user tablespaces.

The $ALTIBASE_HOME directory contains various subdirectories that store important Altibase files including configuration files, data files, log files, library files, sample programs, and trace files. Key subdirectories include bin for execution files, conf for configuration files, lib for library files, include for header files, logs for redo log and anchor files, and trc for trace files recording the current Altibase status. The directory also contains utilities like Audit for data replication consistency checks and directories for archived logs, messages, and database samples.

This document describes the various components involved in managing memory, data, logs, and files for a database system. Key components include the buffer pool, log buffer, dispatcher, session manager, checkpoint memory ager, buffer flusher, log flusher, logfile manager, archive process, and load balancer. AltiBase HDB supports standard SQL features such as subqueries, joins, hierarchical queries, array processing, and DML operations on views. It does not support some object-oriented features from ANSI-SQL1999 and parallel selects, though it can perform parallel inserts and index builds.

Altibase HDB supports stored procedures, functions, packages, views, sequences, queues, monitoring views, roles, DB links, synonyms, table partitioning, user defined types in procedures, cluster objects, on-line backup, XML, and auto-extending databases. Triggers are supported except before update triggers, and materialized views but not snapshots are supported.

A database consists of one or more tablespaces which can be either memory or disk tablespaces. A memory tablespace contains 32KB pages while a disk tablespace contains 8KB pages organized into segments, extents, and pages. Segments in disk tablespaces contain multiple 512KB extents which each contain 64 pages.

AltiBase HDB is a relational, client-server DBMS that uses multi-threading and supports high availability through replication at the table level, with separate instances, individual storage, and schemas for each replicated data set.
