The document discusses how the sharing economy and alternative accommodations have become mainstream options for travelers. It provides examples of how hotels and destinations are promoting local neighborhoods, authentic experiences, and lifestyle branding to engage modern travelers who expect seamless transactions, discovery, and feedback. The sharing economy has raised travelers' expectations, so companies are focusing on deeper connections to values through experiences and content that showcase adventure and authenticity.
Lessons From A Decade In Media EntrepreneurshipRafat Ali
20 lessons I have learned from spending a decade plus in vertical media entrepreneurship, creating and building two companies: paidContent and now Skift.
“Design is how it works.” Steve Jobs
That is what we have set out to do: to define how a modern travel experience should work. That is what we are going to honor with our inaugural Skift Design Awards, what we hope will become the most aspirational awards in the global travel industry and help elevate the role of transformational design experiences that enhance the traveler journey.
We believe the role of design cuts across every part of travel: the physical and digital touch points, the built environments, tech-enabled services, and experiential moments during and post travel.
So we have come up with a manifesto on how to understand design’s role in the travel industry: it will help the travel and allied companies understand the broader role of design and its application to the traveler experience, and its implications on business transformation and customer loyalty.
In today’s consumer-centric world where experiences, personal fulfilment, and transformative moments are revered as the ultimate currency, the role of design – in every sense of the word – has never been more important.

The 14 Trends that Defined Travel in 2014Rafat Ali
What will drive the world’s largest industry in 2014? We looked at 14 trends we think will drive travel industry and consumers this year and beyond: Design, user experience, data, and ease of travel.
Building A Business Information Brand in 2013, the Skift storyRafat Ali
Skift is exactly nine months old today. Since we started the company last year, we have believed we are building a new kind of business information brand — a travel information brand in the largest sense of that phrase — a startup built to scale out of the vertical ghettos.
What are the lessons we have learned from the last nine months? How do you build a brand that will transcend industry-defined historical boundaries? What are the lessons of being a thin/lean/insert-your-buzzy-phrase media+data startup and how do you break through in a seemingly mature and crowded space? Can it be replicated in other sectors, by other startups?
Skift's founder and CEO Rafat Ali gave a presentation earlier this week at the ABM annual conference, on “Building a Business Information Brand in 2013” which attempted to answer some of those questions.

UX, ethnography and possibilities: for Libraries, Museums and ArchivesNed Potter
These slides are adapted from a talk I gave at the Welsh Government's Marketing Awards for the LAM sector, in 2017.
It offers a primer on UX - User Experience - and how ethnography and design might be used in the library, archive and museum worlds to better understand our users. All good marketing starts with audience insight.
The presentation covers the following:
1) An introduction to UX
2) Ethnography, with definitions and examples of 7 ethnographic techniques
3) User-centred design and Design Thinking
4) Examples of UX-led changes made at institutions in the UK and Scandinavia
5) Next Steps - if you'd like to try out UX at your own organisation
The sector of Destination Marketing has undergone several identity crises, resulting in name changes. Thus, the “Destination Marketing Organisation” (DMO) is becoming “Destination Development, Management and Marketing Organisation” (DDMMO). Of course we do not want to come up with another acronym but this is a way of describing the changes occurring in both Tourism Industry and Meetings Industry. DMOs require a much fuller and deeper coalition of destination partnerships to maintain the visibility of their destination as a great place to live, work, study and visit. With this holistic approach, there is for sure room for DMOs to engage not only towards leisure travellers but also with meetings, incentives conferences and events industry in a targeted way that meets the wider policy objectives of their city.
Digital customer engagement is a critical success factor for market players in the travel sector. Switching between brands has never been easier for travelers. That's why it's critical for marketing and digital experts to offer a differentiated customer experience (CX) to better meet the consumers changing expectations for engagement with brands.
Today's digital solutions need to be built around customer engagement to provide an optimal and omni-channel CX. While the boundaries between physical and digital trade are increasingly blurred, strong brands understand they need to offer the best possible customer engagement tools.
In this new report, Redefining Digital CX in the Online Tourism, you'll explore the latest best practices for digital strategies: among them, conversational marketing approaches to bring back a human touch to the heart of the customer experience.
Brands are setting the stage to create our own unique and customized experience – we can have
it the way we want it.
It’s all about experiencing the reality based on our personality, our behavior and our needs.
Brands are offering us a solid and abundant base of content or actions to make us interact with
them. But how we want to consume and enjoy it — that’s our call. We are given useful tools to
design and navigate through the experiences according to our wishes with just little tips, hints
and recommendations from brands to make it just a little bit better.
Technology, attitudes, needs and wants are making the ‘end of mass’ a closer reality
As technology and marketing evolve, people are starting to question the role that digital marketing plays in our lives - and the value it adds to real life experience in providing purpose and value. At the intersection of this transformation in digital are the disciplines of Cultural and Experience Marketing. Only by breaking past established ways of thinking can agencies and brands continue to deliver true value, meaning and purpose to clients and customers. In this presentation, we’ll explore the convergence of current trends, new approaches, and how to incorporate it all into your strategic planning to be ahead of the game in the years to come.
Key Takeaways:
1) Understand how the core principles of Cultural and Experience Marketing can guide digital planning.2) Evaluate the fundamental value and purpose that people get from your Brand.3) Identify and understand current gaps in your strategic and tactical marketing approach.4) Apply different types of strategic thinking to content, creative, and campaign planning.5) Be able to identify and become a true Cultural Experience brand.

Cultural Appeal: How to Dazzle Travelers with Heritage ValuesMihaela Lica Butler
Delivering online marketing strategy to attract more guests. „All tourism is a cultural experience.“ (D MacCannell, 1976, The tourist: A new theory of the leisure class)
Because the lines between cultural tourism and tourism for the sake of leisure blurred, the mere act of traveling to a different destination outside our homes can be defined as a cultural experience. With every trip, we learn something new, we meet people we do not know, we are exposed to unalike lifestyles, and we learn about local cultures while often taking in a speckle of tradition even when we didn’t plan for a cultural journey. But it’s time to “unblur” the lines and to get back to the basics.
The "experience" is what travelers are expecting today and cultural values play an important role in what they take in when they visit a place. See how Airbnb impacts the experience and how to overcome the digital struggle to remain relevant and competitive.

Skift Research: U.S. Consumer Travel Post-PandemicRafat Ali
One of the biggest questions for the stalling travel industry when much of the world remains in crisis, while certain parts being to re-open, is: When will people start to travel again? Not to mention, how will they travel and where will they go? Tracking consumer sentiment is a primary way to understand these questions, keep track of shifting behaviors and attitudes as and when they are shaped, and then consider the pathways to both short-term and long-term recovery solutions.
Join Skift Research for this Travel’s Path Forward: Consumer Sentiment webinar as we discuss findings on how COVID-19 is impacting travel at the moment and what American consumers are thinking about for their future travel when the outbreak is finally behind them.
