This document summarizes a study that investigated students' alternative conceptions about the water cycle through drawings and interviews. The study involved undergraduate science students with an average age of 21. Students were asked to draw the water cycle and were classified based on the level of understanding shown in their drawings. Individual interviews were then conducted. Common alternative conceptions identified included thinking the water cycle only involved freezing/melting, only evaporation and condensation, or that water only evaporates from seas and oceans. The scientific understanding of the full water cycle process is also provided.
