SANCTUARY A sacred part of the church The ambo, altar and presidential chair are all found here
ALTAR The table where the Eucharist is celebrated Is a symbol of (and represents) Jesus Christ
SACRAMENTARY Sometimes called the Missal or Altar Missal Has all the prayers used by the priest at Mass Is used at the altar and the presidential chair
HOST The consecrated Body of Christ
PATEN Plate or bowl that contains the host, the consecrated Body of Christ Paten
CHALICE Cup that contains the Blood of Christ Chalice
PURIFICATOR Also called a purifier A cloth used to wipe the chalice every time someone drinks from it
CIBORIUM A container that holds the Body of Christ Usually used when keeping hosts in the tabernacle
CORPORAL Name comes from Latin word “corpus”, meaning “body” Chalice and paten are placed on it during Mass They catch any particles of the Blessed Sacrament that may fall from the chalice or paten
CRUET Small jug that contains water or wine for Mass
LAVABO BOWL AND TOWEL The bowl the priest uses to wash his hands as he prepares the gifts When he washes his hands, he prepares for the eucharistic prayer and asks God to wash away his sins
AMBO Also called a lectern The place where the readers, deacon and priest proclaim the readings during Mass
LECTIONARY Has all the scripture readings used in the Church
BOOK OF GOSPELS Has all the Gospel readings used at Mass Used by the deacon when there is one Usually processed to the ambo during the Gospel acclamation
PRESIDENTIAL CHAIR The chair on which the presider sits
CRUCIFIX A cross with the figure of Jesus on it
CREDENCE TABLE Kept to one side in the sanctuary All the things needed for Mass are kept there when they are not needed at the altar
TABERNACLE The place where we keep the Blessed Sacrament, that is, the consecrated bread that is Jesus Tabernacle
TABERNACLE LAMP Lamp that is kept burning to show that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the tabernacle When the tabernacle is in the sanctuary, this lamp may be called a sanctuary lamp Tabernacle Lamp
PROCESSIONAL CROSS Carried into the church at the front of a procession It reminds us that Jesus died for us, and is the most well-known symbol of our faith and our Church
PROCESSIONAL CANDLES Carried either side of the cross in the entrance procession Used in other processions, and during the proclamation of the Gospel
INCENSE Grains that are sprinkled onto burning charcoal Makes clouds of sweet smelling smoke A reminder that our prayers rise up to God Incense
THURIBLE The vessel where we place the incense on glowing charcoal so it can burn and be used during Mass Thurible
INCENSE BOAT Holds incense that is used in the thurible during Mass Incense Boat
FONT Pool of water where people are baptised
PASCHAL CANDLE Is a symbol of Jesus, the Light of the World, who rose from the dead It is used at baptisms and funerals It stands in the sanctuary during the Easter season, then is kept near the baptismal font
ALB Long white linen tunic Comes from Latin word “albus”, meaning “white” Can be worn by anyone who is baptised Alb
STOLE A coloured vestment worn around the neck It shows that the priest is celebrating one of the sacraments It also shows he has the duty to preach the Word of God Stole
CHASUBLE A coloured vestment that looks like a poncho Is worn over the top of the other vestments It shows that the priest is celebrating Mass Chasuble
CINCTURE A rope belt Cincture
HUMERAL VEIL Long, rectangular garment, held together at the front with a clasp Used by the priest or deacon when he carries a ciborium or monstrance with the Body of Christ in it Usually worn with a cope Humeral Veil Cope
MONSTRANCE A metal container on a stand that holds and displays a host Used at exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
STATIONS OF THE CROSS They are usually images placed around the church These images usually show the final events in Jesus’ life, including his death and burial
SACRISTY The room where the priest and servers prepare themselves for Mass
