2. What is Altar Servers
An Altar Server is a lay Assistant to a member of
clergy during a Christian Liturgy.An Altar Server
attends to supporting tasks at the Altar such as
fetching and carrying,ringing the Altar Bell and
among other things.

3. What does an Altar Server
do?
The two main duties of an Altar Servers are to
Assist the Bishop, Priest and Deacon during the
Celebration of Mass and help the people pray by
your example.

4. Who can become An Altar
Server
Anyone who is in the 3rd grade,made your First
Holy Communion and is enrolled in Faith
Formation classes with the willingness to serve
any of the masses that is Celebrated in
accordance with the Christ Teachings

5. Procedures that should follow by An Altar Server:-
>Before Mass
>During Mass
>After Mass
BEFORE MASS:
>Arrive 15 minutes before the Mass starts.
>Dress into Alb,Cincture and Appropriate cross.
>Stand at the back of Church Sacresty until the
mass starts.

6. During Mass
1) Carry the Crucifix during the Procession.
2) Assist in setting the Altar Servers.
3) Carry Candles during offertory procession.
4) Hold the wine and water during the
Eucharistic part.
5) Hold pitcher and bowl so the priest can wash
his hands.
6) Clear the Altar after Communion part.
7) Carry the Crucifix during the ending part. 6
7. After Mass
1) Replace the Crucifix in the Sacresty.
2) Replace the Alb,Stole, and Cross.

9. What attire should An Altar Server
wear before coming for Serving
1) Must wear a plain white colour T-shirt.
2) Should wear a black colour Shoes.

10. Know the names and functions of the
different parts of Altar Servers
Things:
1) Paten - a small gold plate that goes on top the purificator on the
chalice. This plate holds the large host used by Father at Mass.
2) Pall - A stiff square of white cloth that goes over the paten. It is used to
cover the chalice once the wine has been poured in it to keep anything from
falling in.
3) Corporal - A large square of white cloth that goes under the chalices and
ciborium on the altar. It is used to catch any bits of the host that fall during
Mass.

11. 4) Purificator - A white rectangle of fabric used for cleaning the chalice. It
goes between the chalice and paten.
5) Chalice - The large gold cup used to consecrate the wine at Mass. Other
chalices may be placed on the altar if Communion under both kinds is being
distributed to the congregation.

15. Know the different colors for the liturgical seasons:
1) Green - used during ordinary time.
2) Violet / Purple - used during Advent and Lent.
3) White - used during Easter and Christmas seasons, on feasts of Jesis,
Mary, and saints who were not martyrs. Can also be used at Masses for
the dead.
4) Red - Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, Apostles, Evangelists and
martyrs.
5) Gold and Silver can be worn on special feasts such as Easter and
Christmas.

16. Know the parts of the Mass:
1) Entrance Procession or Processional- the ceremony at the beginning of
Mass where Father and the Deacon enter the Sanctuary.
2) Penitential Rite - the part of the Mass where we reflect on God's
abundant mercy.
3) Gloria - the hymn following the penitential rite praising God.
4) Collect (opening prayer) - the first prayer of the Mass that changes every
week.
5) 1st and 2nd Reading - readings from the Old Testament and parts of the
New Testament, except the Gospel.
6) Responsorial Psalm - the hymn that comes between the 1st and 2nd
reading.
7) Gospel- the reading from the Bible that tells about the life of Christ.
8) Homily - the part of the Mass where Father explains the readings from
the GOSPEL. 16
17. 9) Creed (Credo) - the part of the Mass where we all say what we believe
about God and the Church.
10) Universal Prayers/Prayer Of Faithful - the part of the Mass where we pray
for those in need.
11) The Offertory - the part of the Mass where the gifts are brought to the
altar
12) Eucharistic Prayer and Consecration - the part of the Mass where the
bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.
13) Communion - the part of the Mass where we receive Christ in the
appearance of bread and wine.
14) Closing Prayer - the final prayer of the Mass
15) Recessional - the procession that occurs after the end of Mass when
everyone leaves the Sanctuary

18. The Patron Saint of Altar Servers:-
Saint John Berchmans
Eldest son of a shoemaker, John was born at Diest, Brabant. He early wanted to
be a priest, and when thirteen became a servant in the household of one of the
Cathedral canons at Malines, John Froymont. In 1615, he entered the newly
founded Jesuit College at Malines, and the following year became a Jesuit novice.
He was sent to Rome in 1618 to continue his studies, and was known for his
diligence and piety, impressing all with his holiness and stress on perfection in
little things. He died there on August 13. Many miracles were attributed to him
after his death, and he was canonized in 1888. He is the Patron Saint Of The Altar
Servers. His Feast Day is on November 26.
