A newly published scientific study adds to the evidence that drinking coffee reduces the risk of diabetes. Researchers in Athens, Greece have discovered that habitual coffee drinkers have lower levels of inflammation and more antioxidants in their blood. Reuters reports how coffee drinking seems reduce the risk of diabetes via reduction of inflammation and increasing antioxidants.
Coffee drinkers in a long-term study were about half as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as those who didn’t drink coffee, and researchers think an inflammation-lowering effect of the beverage might be the key.
Drinking less than 1.5 cups of coffee per day was termed “casual” coffee drinking, and more than 1.5 cups per day was “habitual” drinking. There were 816 casual drinkers, 385 habitual drinkers and 239 non-coffee drinkers.
The participants also had blood tests to evaluate levels of protein markers of inflammation. The tests also measured antioxidant levels, which indicate the body’s ability to neutralize cell-damaging “free radicals.”
Habitual coffee drinkers were 54 percent less likely to develop diabetes compared to non-coffee drinkers, even after accounting for smoking, high blood pressure, family history of diabetes and intake of other caffeinated beverages, the researchers reported in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Levels of serum amyloid, one of the inflammatory markers in the blood, seemed to explain some of the relationship between coffee and diabetes, the authors write. Higher coffee consumption went along with lower amyloid levels.
An interest thought arises here. High levels of coffee consumption are also related to a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, a disease in which amyloid plaques damage nerves in the brain. The Alzheimer’s Association explains how beta-amyloid destroys nerve cells in the brain by causing brain plaques.
Plaques form when protein pieces called beta-amyloid (BAY-tuh AM-uh-loyd) clump together. Beta-amyloid comes from a larger protein found in the fatty membrane surrounding nerve cells.
Beta-amyloid is chemically “sticky” and gradually builds up into plaques. The most damaging form of beta-amyloid may be groups of a few pieces rather than the plaques themselves. Pomenuti smanjeni rizik najva`niji je kod koronarne sr~ane
bolesti i ishemijskog mo`danog udara, koje izaziva ate ro -
sklerotska vaskularna bolest. Postoje tvrdnje da takvi efekti
zavise od vrste pi}a, kao i da crno vino ima najmo } nije
dejstvo. Ovaj pregled ispita}e relativni doprinos etanola i
polifenolskih antioksidanata iz crnog vina, razmatraju}i nji -
hov potencijal da inhibiraju aterogenezu i njene meha niz -
me. Postoji valjani dokazi, kako in vitro tako i in vivo, da
etanol pove}ava produkciju i cirkuli{u}e nivoe HDL-hole -
ste rola i smanjuje formiranje ugru{aka tako {to blokira
aktiv nost trombina i inhibiciju fibrinolize. Na taj na~in spre -
~ava migraciju glatkih mi{i}nih }elija u intimalni sloj arterija
i sni`ava incidencu dijabetes melitusa tipa 2, kao va`nog
faktora rizika za aterosklerotsku bolest. Crno vino pored
etanola sadr`i mnoge polifenolske antioksidante tako|e
prisutne u vo}u i povr}u (npr. katehin i kvercetin), kao i rez -
veratrol koji se gotovo isklju~ivo nalazi u gro`|u i crnom
vinu. U in vitro eksperimentima pokazano je da ti polifenoli,
naro~ito rezveratrol, iskazuju mo}na svojstva koja omogu -
}avaju spre~avanje ateroskleroze. Pored toga {to smanjuju
formiranje ugru{aka, oni ubla`avaju inflamatorne reakcije
regulisanjem produkcije eikozanoida i citokina, spre~avaju
oksidaciju LDL, smanjuju ekspresiju molekula }elijske adhe -
zije i pove}avaju produkciju NO. Me|utim, istra`ivanja na

Extensive analysis of blood samples, survey data and medical and family histories obtained from more than 100 human participants in a multiyear study has revealed a fundamental inflammatory mechanism associated with human aging and the chronic diseases that come with it.
What scientists found is that the building blocks for our genes, called nucleic acids, can set off inflammation when they circulate in the blood. The problem as we age is that at least 90% of non-communicable diseases associated with aging are driven by chronic inflammation. As examples chronic inflammation plays a role in diseases ranging from depression, osteoarthritis and heart disease to Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Stanford University School of Medicine scientists have unearthed a connection between advancing age, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease and coffee consumption.
Extensive analysis of blood samples, survey data and medical and family histories obtained from more than 100 human participants in a multiyear study has revealed a fundamental inflammatory mechanism associated with human aging and the chronic diseases that come with it.
What scientists found is that the building blocks for our genes, called nucleic acids, can set off inflammation when they circulate in the blood. The problem as we age is that at least 90% of non-communicable diseases associated with aging are driven by chronic inflammation. As examples chronic inflammation plays a role in diseases ranging from depression, osteoarthritis and heart disease to Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
The good part is that the caffeine in coffee seems to decrease the inflammation which apparently contributes to the reduced incidence of many of the “diseases of aging” in coffee drinkers.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

Image source: nohealthnolife.net Image source: Spiritz.in Allergen alert: Why Alcoholic Beverages Can Trigger an Asthma Attack Asthma is a negative reaction to allergens entering the body, and two types of allergens can be found in alcohol: Histamines, a common allergen, is produced by bacteria and yeast during alcohol fermentation. Sulfites, on the other hand, are added as a preservative for wine and beer. There are fewer cases of allergic reactions to sulfites with around 10 percent of asthmatic people showing sensitivity to the allergen. A lot of research is still needed to establish a clear connection between alcoholic drinks and asthma, and not all people with asthma would experience an attack triggered by alcohol. In a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 33 percent of 350 adults surveyed reported an asthma attack induced by an alcoholic beverage in at least two occasions, and that mild to moderate symptoms occurred within an hour of drinking. The same study reported that wine seemed more allergenic. Whether or not one should avoid drinking alcohol depends on the person’s level of sensitivity to allergens that exist in the beverage.
