This PowerPoint presentation presents and introduces Alla Prima--a painting technique used in watercolor but mostly oil painting. This PPT also includes tips and reminders on how to do a wet-on-wet technique.
Acrylic paint was developed in the 1940s and gained popularity in the 1960s when used by pop artists like Andy Warhol. Acrylics are water-based, dry quickly, and are easy to use and clean up. They can be applied opaque or transparent. Common acrylic painting techniques include color blocking, wet-on-wet blending, hard edges, glazing, scumbling, impasto, and watercolor effects. Proper brush care involves cleaning immediately after use to prevent dried paint from ruining the brush.
The document provides an overview of different art mediums and techniques taught in classes, including:
1) Contour drawing focuses on outlines and cross-contours without shading. Gesture drawing suggests form and movement through loose marks. Life drawing involves drawing live human models.
2) Color pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, oils, and sculpture are also artistic mediums covered. Basic techniques are described for each along with example online video tutorials. The document serves as a guide for beginning and improving drawing skills across different visual art forms.
The document provides instructions for painting a surface, including:
1) Preparing the surface by removing furniture, covering other surfaces, and patching cracks or holes.
2) Using the appropriate tools like sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, rollers and trays.
3) Applying paint in continuous, overlapping strokes and allowing time to dry between coats.
4) Taking safety precautions like adequate ventilation, eye protection and properly disposing of paint.

This podcast episode discusses different painting techniques for beginners. It covers oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, and pastel painting. For each technique, it provides details on the materials used, advantages, disadvantages, and how they compare in terms of versatility, drying time, and difficulty level. Oil painting is described as the most forgiving for beginners. Acrylic painting dries very fast but is versatile. Watercolors dry quickly and mistakes are hard to fix, while pastels come in different hardness levels and can be applied various ways.
The document provides information on oil painting techniques for beginners, including how to prepare an oil painting canvas. It discusses stretching the canvas, applying gesso or primer, and determining the focal point of a painting through composition techniques. The key steps for canvas preparation involve stretching it tightly on a frame before priming, and applying gesso in multiple thin coats for an even surface. To establish a focal point, an artist can use techniques like the rule of thirds, lighting and contrast, leading lines, and de-emphasizing surrounding areas.
The document provides instructions for painting a mural. It recommends starting by getting inspiration from famous murals and current events. The key materials needed are latex paint for large areas and acrylics for details, along with various sized paintbrushes, trays, and rollers. A suitable location is also important. There are three painting methods discussed: projector, gridding, or direct drawing. The document concludes by stating mural painting takes skill and practice but can powerfully convey messages to communities.
This document provides information on various painting mediums and techniques including:
- Tempera, which uses pigments mixed with egg yolk or whole egg, was popular for centuries but fell out of favor with the introduction of oil painting.
- Oil painting consists of ground pigments combined with linseed oil and allows for blending of colors and reworking of areas.
- Acrylic paint is a mixture of pigment and plastic that can be used on more surfaces than oil paint.
- Watercolor, also called aquarelle, uses transparent films of paint on an absorbent surface and has advantages of being portable but corrections are not possible.
- Spray paint raises questions about its purpose and whether it

This document provides information about projects and lessons inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's work. It includes 5 sections covering da Vinci as an engineer, draftsman, sculptor and painter. The projects guide students through activities like building a flying machine, sketching animals, making a fresco and clay horse sculpture. They also discuss da Vinci's famous painting the Mona Lisa and how her eyes seem to follow the viewer. The goal is for students to apply da Vinci's styles and ideas to their own creations while learning about his passion for art and science.
This document provides an overview of the process for making a mural. It begins with selecting a suitable location with a surface that can be painted on. The designer then chooses a design that the community will enjoy, often using a grid method to translate the design onto the mural site. Acrylic paint is commonly used since it dries quickly without fading or smearing. The painting process involves applying an undercoat layer, followed by layers of colored paints. A final glossy paint layer is applied to give the mural a clean, bright finish and attract attention from the community. The document emphasizes that creating a mural requires significant effort from design to completion.
The document provides an overview of various painting terms, materials, and techniques including pigments, binders, supports, fresco, tempera, oil painting, watercolor, gouache, acrylics, and collage. It also discusses important artists who worked in these mediums like Van Eyck, Michelangelo, Wyeth, Homer, and Picasso. The chapter concludes with details on 5 watercolor techniques students are asked to demonstrate in an in-class project.
This document provides instructions for beginners on how to use stencils to paint walls. It outlines the necessary supplies which include stencils, paint, rollers, brushes and tape. It then details the step-by-step process of applying the stencil which involves taping it to the wall, lightly applying paint with a roller or brush, checking the design, and repeating for additional patterns. Proper technique of using minimal paint is emphasized to avoid bleeding.
The document discusses common painting problems and how to avoid and remedy them. It identifies 13 specific problems including brushmarks, flaking, runs, specks and more. For each problem, it explains the likely causes and provides tips on proper surface preparation and application techniques to prevent issues. Safety precautions are also outlined when working with paints, especially older paints containing lead. Proper equipment, preparation, application and cleaning can help avoid most common painting problems.

Impressionism was the first distinctly modern movement in painting, developing in Paris in the 1860s. A group of artists organized an exhibition in 1874 that launched the Impressionist movement, using short, thick strokes of paint to quickly capture the essence of subjects rather than details and applying colors side-by-side with minimal mixing to create vibrant surfaces. Impressionist paintings emphasized the play of natural light and boldly painted shadows with reflected sky blue to give a fresh sense previously unseen in painting.
This document provides instructions for interior painting. It discusses preparing surfaces by removing fixtures, filling cracks and holes, washing surfaces, and sanding. It recommends starting at the top of walls and working down, painting in sections to avoid visible lines. Woodwork preparation involves washing, sanding, and priming bare wood. The instructions emphasize preparation, using the proper tools, and working systematically to achieve a smooth, professional finish.
The document discusses various watercolor techniques including washes, glazing, wet in wet, dry brush, lifting off color, dropping in color, spraying water, back washes, alcohol textures, tissue paper texture, plastic wrap texture, and layer by layer application. Examples are provided for each technique to illustrate how it is used and the effects that are achieved. Reference sources are also included at the end to provide more information on watercolor techniques.

This document provides an overview of Impressionism, including its origins in 1860s France as a rebellion against traditional art. Impressionist artists aimed to capture fleeting moments using small, visible brush strokes in vibrant colors applied side-by-side. Famous Impressionists like Monet and Degas painted landscapes and scenes en plein air or in studios. They focused on effects of light and color mixing while avoiding black paint. The document instructs students to create their own Impressionist paintings using these techniques and share their works.
This document provides 10 tips for using acrylic paints in studio art. It recommends keeping rags or paper towels on hand to blot excess water from brushes and wipe brushes between color changes. Acrylic paint dries quickly so artists must keep brushes moist by dipping in water and replacing dirty water. Tips include keeping paints workable, blotting brushes, using paint thickly or thinly, building transparent glazes in thin layers, improving flow without losing color, blending quickly, using masking tape for sharp edges, using washing up liquid to remove masking fluid from brushes, and using acrylic paint thickly as glue for collage.

WET ON WET OR ALLA PRIMA
⬤ Italian, meaning “First Attemp”
⬤ Also known as direct painting or au premier
coup
⬤ A technique in which layers of wet paint
are applied to previously administered
layers of wet paint.
4. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Did you know?
It is used mostly in oil painting, the technique
requires a fast way of working, because the work has to be
finished before the first layers have dried.
Wet-on-wet painting has been practiced alongside
other techniques since the development of oil painting,
and was used by several of the major Early Netherlandish
Painters in parts of their pictures, such as Jan van Eyck in
the Arnolfini portrait, and Rogier van der Weyden.
5. SLIDESMANIA.COM
The Arnolfini Portrait is a
1434 oil painting on oak
panel by the Early
Netherlandish painter Jan
van Eyck . It forms a full-
length double portrait,
believed to depict the Italian
merchant Giovanni di
Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife,
presumably in their
residence at the Flemish city
of Bruges.
6. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Impressionists such as Claude Monet, post-
Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh, realists such
as John Singer Sargent and Robert Henri and George
Bellows, Expressionists such as Chaïm Soutine, and
the Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning have in
different ways employed this technique, and it is still heavily
used by both figurative and non-figurative fine
artists. Artist Bob Ross employed the technique for his
show The Joy of Painting in order to produce complete
pieces in real time within a single episode.
7. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Did you know?
Since the mid-19th century, the use of
commercially produced paints in small
collapsible tubes has facilitated an easily
accessible variety of colors to be used for
rapid and on-the-spot painting.
8. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Alla Prima is a direct method of
painting that is completed mostly in
one sitting. In older days, quite a bit
of planning went into it, but now a
days, its more of a direct approach
without prior planning involved.
9. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Wet on wet painting is a painting
technique in which new paint is applied to
previously applied paint that has not dried yet.
Wet on wet painting allows the painter to
continuously apply layers for corrosion
prevention rather than waiting for each
successive layer to dry. Wet on wet can also
help with mixing paints.
10. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Great care must be taken when performing
wet on wet painting. The painter must be aware of
the force he or she is using with the brush,
because too much pressure can cause the paint
to mix together or alter the layer underneath.
Also, the paint should generally be less viscous
the farther up in layers one goes. The use of
thinner and thinner paints also helps reduce the
risk of changing the layers underneath.
11. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Wet on wet painting is a great way to reduce
the time it takes to complete a painting job
compared to waiting for the outermost layer to
dry before beginning another layer. Wet on wet
painting can allow an applicator to finish painting
in one day or even in several hours depending on
the size of the object's surface area and the
number of layers being applied.
12. SLIDESMANIA.COM
In order to keep your paints from
turning to mud, remember these
points:
1. Make sure the paint you’re applying is
thicker (fatter) than the wet color
underneath.
13. SLIDESMANIA.COM
2. The thicker your paint, the lighter your
touch should be. Pushing the brush too
forcefully will blend the paint in with the
layer underneath. Dropping it in with a
light touch helps it stay on top rather
than blending in with the paint under it.
14. SLIDESMANIA.COM
3. Don’t fuss! Once you’ve laid in a brush
stroke–just leave it. If you keep stroking
it instead of leaving it alone, it causes
your brush stroke to lose its definition.
Once you’ve set down a stroke, leave it
alone (unless it’s wrong—then carefully
scrape the paint off using a palette knife
and try again).
15. SLIDESMANIA.COM
TIPS
1. Paint on a toned surface.
2. Start painting dark to
light.
3. Work large to small.
4. Remember that shadows
are not black.
5. Warm tones come
forward, cool tones
recede.
6. Stand while you paint.
7. Squint your eyes.
8. Edges are either hard or
soft.
9. Add highlights last.

I find spiritual beauty in all the things that I
paint. The innocence of a child's face, the
endless blue color of the sky, the smell of
flowers in the garden, the sound of
raindrops falling on the roof. These gives
joy in my heart, inspiration, and gratitude...
of being an artist
