Media II, III: Photography Syllabus
General Course Information

Course Description: This yearlong course will explore all areas of photography. The class will combine hands-on training with
photographic theory. Students will be encouraged to become proficient in shooting, uploading and manipulating images. Some
specializations may develop as the year goes on, depending on student aptitudes and interests. The online component allows
students to become familiar with an online interface, and to become more independent in completing coursework.
Texts & Materials Needed: Adobe Photoshop CS5, Digital SLR Camera with 18-55 mm lens and access to 100-300mm lens. Online
tutorials as well as instructional materials created or selected by instructor.
Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions:
 Students will understand how to operate camera for best composition and exposure in photographs.
 Students will understand how to manipulate photographs in Adobe Photoshop CS5 for maximum visual effect.
 Students will understand how to work independently in a workshop environment to complete monthly assignments.
Procedures for participating in the online environment:
 Access the blended schools.net site daily for assignments, discussion board and/or other online tools as instructed.
 All material posted and stated during class must be appropriate and within the school and media honor codes.
 Course calendar can be viewed on the main announcements page as well as in the classroom.
Course Procedures
Cameras & Computers
 Where you sit determines computer and camera for the year
 Cameras may be signed out overnight/weekends
 Cameras to be picked up after 9th period, returned by first period or points taken off and privilege revoked
 All bags, purses, drinks, food etc. in front of room, not near computers
 No web-surfing beyond related sites; all audio to be listed to with headphones
 The last photography class of the day will pack and format cameras; where you sit determines which camera you will pack
Media Passes
 Media passes must be worn when going outside of the classroom
 If pass is lost, you will receive only ONE replacement, after that, all privileges beyond classroom revoked
 You may also have your pass taken from you and be "benched" for inappropriate behavior outside of the classroom
Monthly Assignments (each worth 10 points)
1. Digital Signage: create announcements, PSAs, advertisements and inspirational posters for school signage
2. Online Focus: create a work from scratch and submit work online
3. Proficiency: perform new techniques on DSLR cameras
4. Tutorial: perform new techniques in Photoshop
5. Project : utilizing proficiency and tutorial techniques to develop a full work and focus on composition
6. Challenge: read short article, summarize and mimic composition technique and analyze settings, submit online
7. Event Shoot: capture sports and activities for school publications
8. Share: saving best photo of month and discussing in large group
9. Clean Up: managing files and space on network
Students will personally conference or submit assignments online when each assignment in complete for a grade. Late assignments
will not be accepted, with the exception of Event Shoots, which may be done a month behind, but in the same nine weeks.
Weekly Participation (5 points per week)
Students will receive 5 points for completing a specific number of assignments per week as well as AVOIDING any of the following:
 Returning camera after 1st period
 Surfing unapproved websites
 Late to class without pass
 Any inappropriate conversation about other students/teachers
 Inappropriate or off-task behavior outside of the classroom when shooting
 If student has any of above infractions over 3 times, he/she is unable to take a camera out for the remainder of the nine
weeks AND may also be benched from shooting outside of the classroom.
Annual Gallery Event
Opening night for our annual Gallery is in late February at the Peters Township Public Library. Here you will have works on display
for the public to view. Our opening night is MANDATORY. You can invite family/friends and come anytime between 6:30-8:00 p.m.
to view your work, your peers' work and enjoy refreshments. The display will stay up for two weeks.
Media Honor Code
I will honor myself, my school, my peers and the media department by using my creativity and talent to inspire integrity.
If you violate the student handbook and it is recorded, printed, or saved you will be held accountable to school district discipline and
you may be removed from the media class. This includes, but is not restricted to the following:
 Defamation of another person
 Using copyrighted materials (this is any Internet image or image you did not take)
 Inappropriate media downloaded on school computers
 Inappropriate use/abuse of technology or inappropriate behavior outside of the classroom
