Examine a current physical activity, event, trend or issue and its impact on New Zealand society:
Critically examine the role of the Olympics as a tool for learning and developing ethical behaviour and explain in detail the impact
this has on New Zealand society
In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. The first Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC and that was
about 3,000 years ago. The ancient games took place every four years over a period of 1,200 years and still to this day the Olympic
Games is still held every four years. A Roman ruler named Theodosius established the games in 393 CE. The first Olympic Games
that were held in modern times were the Games of the Olympiad which took place in Athens Greece in April of 1896. This means the
modern Olympic Games have been going on for 117 years.
Olympism is a philosophy of life, emphasising and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending
sport with culture and education, Olympism creates a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example.
The Olympic movement seeks to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating young people through sport free of
discrimination and in the Olympic spirit.
Ethical behaviour is characterised by honesty, fairness and equity in interpersonal, professional and sporting relationships. Ethical
behaviour respects the dignity, diversity and rights of individuals and groups of people. Athletes are

Cell phones, social media and sleep; one look around at today's 21st century teenagers and anyone would agree that this motto is
what they seem to survive on. Living in the fast evolving and technologically driven society makes it easy to be oblivious to life on
the other side of the blinders. The traditions, morals and values of our ancestors were the basic foundation, making the mansions we
have built up to today possible in the first place. While the baby boomer generation may argue that today's youth could not possibly

Once joining the Irish family, undergraduates take part in many events to uphold the traditions set forth by graduates from classes

Father Sorin, Father Corby, Knute Rockne, Father Hesburgh, Ara Parseghian, these are all people who have had a hand in shaping the
tradition of Notre Dame," (Doc. C). The customs established by these religious leaders can still be seen today, especially when
looking at the Fighting Irish football team. The community and fanbase surrounding the sport is impeccable. Similar to the New York
Yankees' well known name in the Major League Baseball network, Notre Dame football is a household name nationwide that people
either tune in to either cheer on to victory or pray for to lose (Doc. C). In addition to the liveliness and extensiveness of their fanbase,

who became president. Reagan also tried to win the presidential nomination again in 1976 but lost to Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan

Essay on Ellis Island
On December 31, 1890 a transition in history occured. New York City would start a new era in the history of the United States
starting with the opening of Ellis Island as an immigration depo. This attracted many immigrants to the United Stated because of
more job opportunities and as means to start a new life. As more immigrants came to America, it began to be known as the "land of
opportunities". Immigrants coming in filled work spaces in industries with the hopes of someday becoming successful. These
immigrants helped prove to other future immigrants that if you moved to America then you could start a better life for yourself and

With little money in their pockets and no idea of where they might stay, the search for jobs was desperate. However having thousands
of immigrants arriving in NYC around the same time caused job opportunities to be limited. With no money, many were left
homeless with no place to go but the streets of New York. Having people living on the streets caused overpopulation of the city and
left the city dirty and dismantled. Along with the fall of the city the crime rate began to increase dramaticlly due to immigrants going
to desperate measures to make money. When an immigrant was lucky enough to find a job they faced the challenge of language
barrier, poor working conditions and low wages. These low wages could hardly afford to feed their families let alone provide a decent
shelter. This created what would be known as the slums of New York City. The city was being filled with large apartment buildings
that were run down and overpopulated with immigrants. Over population began creating conflicts between different ethnic groups
throughout New York City. Eventually leading to the divison of the city into sections based on common ethnic backrounds. Nativism
however would be a common problem as it increased because of hatred towards immigrants over such issues including the loss of
opportunities for already settled natives to the area. To avoid this hatred many immigrants chose to take on other names or alter their
own last name. Due to many families

Sportsmanship
"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship, but what is true
Sportsmanship considered to you? Is it an attitude, or simply an act? Sportsmanship can be handled in several different ways. It's how
one team handles another on and off the field. Simply it could also be said as just the way you handle the game in general after a
tough loss, or after an easy win, it how your demeanor is during and after a game. Sportsmanship can be an Individual, as a team, as a
community, or at a deeper meaning all of them together. Sportsmanship has evolved greatly over the years. Sportsmanship is known
as a couple different names including; professionalism, and showmanship. Unsportsmanlike conduct, this results in a 15–yard
penalty, such as excessive celebration during a game after a score or a well–made play. For serious instances of unsportsmanlike
behavior such as fighting, there are fines, suspensions, and bans from games, or even tournaments, and championships. These are all
examples of poor sportsmanship. The number one question is why suffer through penalties or pay thousands of dollars in fines when
you can just keep a calm head? Good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of a game. Sometimes games will get personal and
tension will rise very quickly even when the game is close and a lot is on the line therefore, sportsmanship must be

one of the most important events not just in the 1920's but this has affected us in today's time period. Flappers were single females
from up North that lived middle class lives and worked middle class jobs, but at night though they threw away the prim and proper
lifestyle and went to jazz clubs and vaudeville shows. Where these girls went smoking and alcohol followed them. According to
("Flappers") "Ironically more young women consumed alcohol in the decade it was illegal than ever before. Smoking, another
activity previously reserved for men, became popular among flappers." When the flappers started having there own look it took
America by storm. Clara Bow Hollywood's "it girl" was the pioneer for the look. She started out with getting her hair cut to shoulder

Reagan's Alzheimer's Disease Fortieth President Ronald Reagan was America's dream president. In the eyes of the American people,
he was a miracle worker. He was an honest, caring, humorous president that just about everyone wanted to hear more of what he had

The Success Of The 1920s
The 1920s was a time of prosperity and new ideas that challenged the social norm and began the movement into modernism that we
know of today. The economy was still coming off of the First World War and tax policies were creating an economic boom with the
increase of discretionary income. The United States was in a scary position on what to do after coming home from such a brutal war
that was going to end all wars. The young generation brought out the best in people and challenged the intellect of many bright minds
that had the solid traditionalist views with the new fast paced modernistic thoughts. The 1920s were a time of growth and led the
United States and the modern views came quick and made a lasting impact. Movies were becoming one of the biggest businesses
during the 1920s and most people would spend their leisure time going to the theatre to watch the silent films. They were becoming
huge in the popular culture and Hollywood was the place to be. Roughly by 1922, 40 million people a year in attendance over the
entire country for the movie theatres and in 1930 over 100 million people would attend the movies every year. By 1927, the movie
industry became the fourth largest industry in the country. "The Great Train Robbery" which was released in 1903 was the beginning
of the film industry and would eventually change everything. "Jazz Singer" was the first movie that had synchronized sounds

Era of Heroes in the Golden Age of Sports
The 1920's was an era of role models and great heroes. This period was known as "The Golden Age" of sports. This was a time where
Americans wanted to put the memory of the World War I in the past and appreciate life. It began with the Black Sox scandal of 1919
continuing with historic record breaking athletes. The introduction of radio made is easier for fans to follow their favorite teams. The
economy of the United States was strong for most of the time. New and bigger stadiums were built and for the first time Americans
began to pay money to watch such high level of competition. This is a decade to be remembered. Sports are very vital. They offer a
lifestyle, an occupation, and even a dream. Sports require physical activity and skill in which a team or an individual compete against
others for entertainment. As David G. McComb comments in "Sports in World History", "there is a high degree of training,
investment, and coaching, along with spectators, rules, publicity, and institutional control that come along with these activities."
While participating in sports, it is required to be able to undertake a difficult situation and perform the best out of it. Sports are
definitely more than just a game. Baseball is widely known as the "national pastime" in the 1920's. It was by far the most popular
sport of the era. The most famous athlete in the country at the time was George Herman, commonly known as Babe Ruth. The right

Performance enhancing drugs improve the performance of athletes in sports and/or in the weight room. The wise man Knute Rockne

drugs are an enhancement to muscle growth and energy. Performance–enhancing therapy and drugs have three major negative effects
on athletes, which involve cheating, damaging bodies, and bothering others without this advantage. The use of performance
enhancing drugs is cheating because it violates the rules of the activity. (David). Any athlete that uses drugs to get ahead of others
should automatically be disqualified or suspended from the sport until cleared by a doctor. The problem with this is that some athletes

Biography of President Ronald Wilson Reagan
Ronald Wilson Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois on February 6, 1911 to Jack and Nelle Reagan. Jack enjoyed to talk politics,
was an alcoholic, and often got drunk and lost his job, while Nelle was a very modest woman and helped the poor. Reagan was
reading by age five from his mom teaching him and was baptized into the Disciple of Christ at age 11. In his free time he played
football, ran track, and performed in plays, which he continued to do in his college, Eureka College, in Peoria, Illinois. Since his
family did not have enough money to pay for college, Reagan applied for a scholarship, which he received, and was paid to wash
dishes at his fraternity house. Eureka College was short on money and planned to make cuts on some courses so Reagan spoke out
against it, and he lead a student strike against the cuts. Reagan was then elected into the student senate, which he became president of
in his senior year. When Reagan graduated from college his family was in the Great Depression, and Jack and Neil, Reagan's brother,
were both out of work. The Reagan family was living off of the money made from Nelle's sewing, so Reagan started searching for a
job. He was hired as a radio announcer for the WHO radio station broadcasting college football and Chicago Cub's Baseball. Instead
of watching the games he was announcing, he would receive the information by telegraph from reporter who was at the game. One

Sports In The 1920s Essay
The 1920s has been called the Golden Age of American Sports. It also has been called the Age of the Spectator. The United States
had a strong economy for most of that decade. Many workers had more leisure time. New and bigger stadiums and gymnasiums were
built. The introduction of radio made it easier for fans to keep up with their favorite teams. Newspapers increased their coverage of
sports. Improvements in roads made it possible for fans to travel to athletic events in distant cities. For the first time, large numbers
of Americans began to pay money to watch other people compete in athletic contests.
Baseball was the "national pastime" in the 1920s. More people went to baseball games, more people followed baseball, and more

Notre Dame, coached by Knute Rockne, became the most famous college football team. Illinois star Harold "Red" Grange became a
household name. The best college teams could compete in bowl games, such as the famous Rose Bowl, held in California.
Boxing was popular too. Heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was almost as famous as Ruth. Horse racing, golf, and tennis all had
their fans. College basketball was still a young sport. Professional football and basketball were minor sports.
North Carolina followed most of these trends, although professional boxing and horse racing events were not widely held in the state
because of their association with gambling.
Baseball was very popular in North Carolina in the 1920s. Many communities had professional minor league teams. The piedmont
league had teams in such cities as Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, High Point, and Winston. Charlotte had a team in the South Atlantic
League. Many teams' players came from the local communities. The best players could advance to the major leagues. Rivalries could
be fierce. Games between nearby cities, like Raleigh and Durham, could attract large crowds on weekends or holidays such as the
Fourth of July. Most colleges and high schools had teams. In fact, college baseball was more popular than college basketball during

Essay On Football Injuries
Knute Rockne once said, "Football is a game played with arms, legs, and shoulders but mostly from the neck up". First coming into
this media search, I have researched mostly about the injuries that have been happening all around the world. Through the vigorous
of finding the information, I have found many facts about my topic from a lot of different sources. If players are constantly getting
hurt what is the point of players playing, to hurt themselves? Too much has occurred to players, we need to make a change and make
it feel like they play to have fun without any injuries that stop them from doing that. In the article 40 percent of former NFL players,
suffer from brain injuries, new studies show, posted by the Washington Post on April ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Players wear helmets, shoulder pads, cleats, thigh and knee pads, compression shorts, cup, and still not enough to stop people getting
hurt. An article by Alan Neuhauser once said, "The same damn thing happens every year, and were not getting answers" (usnews). If
the same injury occurs to people every year, I would think of a way to prevent this injury by fixing or adding more gear. The most
important element in football I believe is your gear that players wear. The concept of the game is to score and win, as well as not get
hurt. With the protection of more gear, it can help reduce many of the injuries. The last study that I had looked at went more in depth
about concussions. Gina points out, "When a football player suffers a concussion during a game or in practice, whether they're a pro
or a student, it's serious business"(WebMD). Any type of hard hit to the head should be looked at no matter what to make sure the
player is okay. A concussion "Shakes the brain so hard it hits the skull"(WebMD), and really affects the brain. A concussion stops
them from any activities until they get better for about 2 weeks unless it's really serious. I wish concussion would never exists and
players can just play to have

How Do People Play Sports In The 1920s
In the 1920s sports became very popular. People were interested in watching and enjoying all sports such as baseball, wrestling, and
boxing. People were also interested in the now popular basketball and football. People enjoyed watching these sports because of the
people who played them. Some big sports names were Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Knute Rockne and Red Grange. These people
changed the way we play sports today. This was an era that prevented black people to play professional sports. They were forced to
make their own league, the Negro National League (NNL). With these and other events people dubbed this era as the golden age of
sports. Because of World War One the Olympics were canceled in 1916. In 1920 the Olympics were brought back. They were held in
the country Belgium. The Olympics were held there because of the suffering this country went through during the war. It was a
peaceful event with new ceremonies. Athletes took oaths on behalf of all the athletes attending, and doves were released hoping that
there would be peace during the games. The war also caused some countries to be excluded, including Germany, Austria, and
Hungary. There were a total of 2,622 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Steroids and Sports Essay
Steroids and Sports Steroids, ever since their introduction into the sports world five decades ago, they have been a controversial issue
(WebMD medical news). Anabolic performance dates as far back as the original Olympic Games. Today walking into any gym you

from high School level all the way up to the top. For the past fifty years, athletes around the world use steroids to gain muscle mass,

The use of steroids by athletes to gain muscle mass is rapid and effective. Each individual user makes a decision based on the activity
they participate. Some athletes desire to jump higher, others to run faster, or to throw the farthest and hit home runs, yet others desire
to bench the highest weight possible; and football players want to improve on lean body mass and have a comparative edge, whether
in high school, collage, or the pros. Andrew Rensik, of 9BNEWS reports that, "national statistics show that as much as ten percent of
high school athletes are involved in steroids" (9NEWS.com). A university of Michigan report by the Monitoring Future Study puts
steroid use at 4 percent in 2002, up from 25 percent in 2000. In 1992 71 percent of high school seniors felt that steroid use wasn't
worth risking their health, that number dropped to 51 percent in 2002 (www.nsba.org, Ron Kriochic, Mitch Stephens). "Peak rates of

profit especially baseball teams. This was in part due to the limit of revenue the population had earned and received. Teams became
commercialized by trying to come up with new forms of income without upping the ticket prices. Many athletes turned to Hollywood
to earn money. Many athletes out of this era were; Babe Didrikson, Joe louis, Jesse Owens, and Helen Moody.

Celebrated Jumping Frog
Knute Rockne, a former football coach for the University of Notre Dame once said, "Win or lose, do it fairly." However, in Mark
Twain's story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," the main character, otherwise known as Smiley, does not live by
this saying. The story of Smiley and his "celebrated jumping frog" takes place in a gold–mining camp, which is located in Calaveras
County, California, during the Gold Rush era. The dominant theme in "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," is that
trying to deceive someone can result in unexpected consequences. Several literary devices, including characters, satire, and diction,
are applied to the plot of the short story in order to emphasize the primary theme.

The prominent choices of diction which appear on the first page of Twain's short story, some examples include, "lurking suspicion"
and "he backed me into a corner and blockaded me with his chair.". The diction helps foreshadow the deception that occurs later on
in the story; furthermore, the choice of diction suggests intelligence, which means that someone of higher intelligence is
foreshadowed to try and deceive someone of lower intelligence despite the fact there are consequences. The dialogue of Smiley being
accounted by Simon Wheezler, "he ketched a frog one day and took him home and said he cal'klated to edercate him" (Twain 3),
contains diction that emphasizes the lack of a formal education. By using diction that suggests lack of intelligence and education,
Twain is able to use the theme of deception ending with unexpected consequences to showcase that probability that people with
lower intelligence have a hard time learning of their mistakes, especially when deceived. The final example of diction, "well I don't
see no p'ints about that frog that's any better'n any other frog," (Twain 4), highlights another person with a lack of education, but this
person has more intelligence or at least more awareness than the people Smiley usually tricks, which will eventually make it harder
for Smiley to deceive him; thus, being unable to deceive him means

Politics During The 1980 ' S
Politics in the U.S. during the 1980's were exciting. Much like everything else during this decade, politics were changing and making
a new way for economic development and social construct. Policy in the 1980's were both huge on foreign policy, and domestic
development. The cold war, being the main concern with foreign policy, consisted of Communism versus Democracy, or Socialism
versus Capitalism. President Reagan being the face of America and our Commander and Chief, created "Reaganomics," which fought
for small Government, and utilized Government spending in a way that would effectively establish National Security as well as make
a name for himself as being known as one of the most popular presidents in United State's history. Though these issues took place
some thirty years ago, it is safe to say that the tribulations we faced as a nation in the eighties have directly affected society in 2015. I
think that for most Conservatives and generally all Republicans revere Ronald Wilson Reagan as one of, if not the best President the

Rhetorical Analysis Of Notre Dame
It was a clear afternoon on November 10th, 1928 when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team took the field against the Black
Knights of Army. Army was the number one team in the nation that year, and Notre Dame was having one of their worst seasons ever
under the leadership of legendary coach Knute Rockne. At the end of the opening half, neither team had managed to score.
With his dejected players gathered around him in the locker room, Rockne congratulates them on their performance in the first half
and tells them, " I guess we just can't expect to win them all" (3). He then recalls what the great All–American running back George
Gipp had told him as he laid dying in a hospital bed. What he said next would go down as one of the most famous motivational lines
in sports history. Rockne describes how it was Gipp's final wish for a Notre Dame football team to, ". . . go out there with all they got
and win just one for the Gipper" (5). Using this as a rallying cry, the Irish battled back in the second half and won 12–6. Rockne's use
ethos, pathos, and logos successfully inspired his players to an upset victory and still motivates people to this day. The wording of the
speech has a lot to do with the intended audience. Rockne is speaking to a bunch of young men, some of whom are barely more than
boys. He doesn't use any complex words or phrases, which makes what he is saying easier to understand. That is the key to any good
speech. It doesn't matter what you talk about if no one can understand what you are saying Although Rockne's speech is very brief, he
manages to clearly establish his credibility, or ethos, on the topic of speaking about George Gipp. Rockne states, " None of you ever
knew George Gipp. It was long before your time. But you all know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame" (4). Of all the people
gathered in the room, he was the only one to personally know Gipp, as he was his football coach in the early 1920s and was present
in the hospital when he died. He references Gipp's dying quote by stating, ". . . the last thing he said to me . . ."(5). By stating that he
witnessed George Gipp's last words, Rockne early on establishes his credibility to the assembled players. By just barely stating

The Real Issue Behind the Immigration Debate Essay example
The controversy over immigration has typically overlooked the political purpose of immigration: to supply citizens who will cherish
and uphold the American Founding principles of equality and liberty, of government by consent and the rule of law.
Founding a new nation and then perpetuating it are the two greatest challenges of statesmen. Part of that task of perpetuation–and
Abraham Lincoln reminded us that it can be a more difficult task than founding–is creating new citizens. In the United States this has
involved turning immigrants into citizens. Thus, Jefferson, whose Declaration of Independence did more than any other document to
make America a nation of immigrants, warned against accepting immigrants who would bring with ... Show more content on

We hear two foreign languages in the film–a few words of Norwegian and the Latin of the Old Mass. Rockne was not just an All–
American–that is, a star player–but he was a pure American, albeit an immigrant. And that would be the pattern for future Americans,
drawn from other ethnic groups.
Contrast this old movie with a new one–Bladerunner (1982), where the language, food, and people come from all over the world. It is
almost impossible to tell who is human and who is artificial. In such a world, it might seem laughable to raise the question of who is
an American. But in fact the challenge to the American Founding principle that all men are created equal makes us confront the
question not only of human identity but of American identity.
Some maintain that an openness to immigration outside Europe is a natural result of American ideals. They point to economic
benefits of immigration, lowering the costs of labor. Imitating earlier patterns, such immigrants from Latin American or Asia would
become as integrated into society as Irish, Italians, or eastern Europeans. But others maintain that the cultural differences of more
recent immigration (since the 1965 liberalization), and adverse economic effects on lower–income Americans, tell against the new
policy. Then follow the rancorous charges of racism, elitism, xenophobia, religious

Knute Rockne's Life And Influence On Football And American...
As a child, Knute Rockne had it pretty rough. He was actually born in Voss, Norway March 4, 1888. His parents names were not

coach would be Knute Rockne. Then when he was five years old he immigrated to the United States. He lived in Chicago where he
first started playing football in the sandlots of Logan Square neighborhood. In high school, he was an all–star in football and in track
as a pole vaulter, and rather small for his age. He cut classes to practice track; although, a gifted student Knute ended up quitting high
school in 1905. For four years, he worked at the Chicago Post Office until accumulated enough money for college. At the age of
twenty–two, Rockne enrolled for the University of Notre Dame. His life began at Notre Dame. University life was difficult for
Rockne. He worked as a janitor at the chemistry department to have extra money. Once, he started playing football, fullback and left
tight end, Knute left track and field. Consequently, he decided to base his sports solely on track and field; especially since he set a
school record in pole vault. After setting this record, Rockne decided to give football another try. In 1913, playing tight end, he

Injury plague in the NFL catalyst for greater innovation
The game of football is still in its infancy. The invention of the forward pass and its official adoption in 1906 is proof positive that
fundamentally the game has room to advance. "By all accounts, the forward pass was the invention that saved the game of football
after a great rugby player from Yale in the 1880s, Walter Camp, pioneered rules changes that slowly transformed rugby into the new
game of American Football." –Birth of Pro Football
Player safety has been the catalyst for football evolution. A fact currently supported by the NFL's 1st and Future initiative dealing
with this very topic and others. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell @nflcommish gets booed often but, in my opinion, he was right
to legislate the violent hits out of the NFL.
The wave of change has now begun and history seems to be repeating itself. "Former NFL players' settled a 1 billion dollar lawsuit
that accused the NFL of hiding the risks of repeated concussions in order to return players to the field. The deal avoids the need for a
trial and means the NFL might never have to disclose what it knew, and when."
Safety innovation remarkable influence on the NFL's killer past
The precedent for this next wave of innovation was set by events that triggered the forward pass well over 120 years ago. "After
several serious and fatal injuries resulting from close formation offenses, protests came from men in high places...even President

  • 5. Notre Dame Dbq Essay Cell phones, social media and sleep; one look around at today's 21st century teenagers and anyone would agree that this motto is what they seem to survive on. Living in the fast evolving and technologically driven society makes it easy to be oblivious to life on the other side of the blinders. The traditions, morals and values of our ancestors were the basic foundation, making the mansions we have built up to today possible in the first place. While the baby boomer generation may argue that today's youth could not possibly stick to the traditions set forth one hundred and seventy two years ago, the University of Notre Dame students are the outliers that defy the stereotypical views of our generation. The slogan, "God, Country, Notre Dame" still applies and reigns as a standard and priority for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once joining the Irish family, undergraduates take part in many events to uphold the traditions set forth by graduates from classes before. Bleacherreport.com highlighted a prime point, "there is tradition in the structures and the people that make up this University. Father Sorin, Father Corby, Knute Rockne, Father Hesburgh, Ara Parseghian, these are all people who have had a hand in shaping the tradition of Notre Dame," (Doc. C). The customs established by these religious leaders can still be seen today, especially when looking at the Fighting Irish football team. The community and fanbase surrounding the sport is impeccable. Similar to the New York Yankees' well known name in the Major League Baseball network, Notre Dame football is a household name nationwide that people either tune in to either cheer on to victory or pray for to lose (Doc. C). In addition to the liveliness and extensiveness of their fanbase, the university's football program has produced several National Football League star players and ... Ronald Reagan made a last–minute effort to get the 1968 Republican presidential nomination. He was defeated by Richard Nixon who became president. Reagan also tried to win the presidential nomination again in 1976 but lost to Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy in November 1979, after making political friends at party fund–raising dinners around the country. He easily defeated the other nominees for the Republican nomination. He chose Gerald Ford as his vice–president. But when Ford's negotiators proposed that the vice–president should share presidential powers, Reagan chose George Bush instead. During the campaign against Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter, the biggest issue was the economy. Reagan blamed Carter for weaknesses in foreign policy and a weak army. During the time of the election Reagan had great public support, which made it easier to push his program through congress. When Reagan became president he started out in a recession. 11 percent of the work force was unemployed in fall, 1982. This recession reduced inflation significantly, but the interest rates remained high. During the next two years the economic recovery began. The unemployment came down, but thousands of factory jobs disappeared. The new jobs, which were mostly in service industries, paid less, leaving inflation low. With little money in their pockets and no idea of where they might stay, the search for jobs was desperate. However having thousands of immigrants arriving in NYC around the same time caused job opportunities to be limited. With no money, many were left homeless with no place to go but the streets of New York. Having people living on the streets caused overpopulation of the city and left the city dirty and dismantled. Along with the fall of the city the crime rate began to increase dramaticlly due to immigrants going to desperate measures to make money. When an immigrant was lucky enough to find a job they faced the challenge of language barrier, poor working conditions and low wages. These low wages could hardly afford to feed their families let alone provide a decent shelter. This created what would be known as the slums of New York City. The city was being filled with large apartment buildings that were run down and overpopulated with immigrants. Over population began creating conflicts between different ethnic groups throughout New York City. Eventually leading to the divison of the city into sections based on common ethnic backrounds. Nativism however would be a common problem as it increased because of hatred towards immigrants over such issues including the loss of opportunities for already settled natives to the area. To avoid this hatred many immigrants chose to take on other names or alter their own last name. Due to many families ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Andrew Rensik, of 9BNEWS reports that, "national statistics show that as much as ten percent of high school athletes are involved in steroids" (9NEWS.com). A university of Michigan report by the Monitoring Future Study puts steroid use at 4 percent in 2002, up from 25 percent in 2000. In 1992 71 percent of high school seniors felt that steroid use wasn't worth risking their health, that number dropped to 51 percent in 2002 (www.nsba.org, Ron Kriochic, Mitch Stephens). "Peak rates of annual use occurred in 2002 and 2004 for 12th graders (2.5 percent), in 2000 and 2002 for 10th graders (2.2 percent). Eighth graders reported significant decrease in lifetime and annual steroid use in 2004, as well as a decrease in perceived availability of steroid drugs. A significant decrease was also measured among 10th graders for 2004" (Infofacts 2). Athletes of all levels abuse anabolic steroids to improve performance and to enhance the ... • 57. Celebrated Jumping Frog Knute Rockne, a former football coach for the University of Notre Dame once said, "Win or lose, do it fairly." However, in Mark Twain's story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," the main character, otherwise known as Smiley, does not live by this saying. The story of Smiley and his "celebrated jumping frog" takes place in a gold–mining camp, which is located in Calaveras County, California, during the Gold Rush era. The dominant theme in "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," is that trying to deceive someone can result in unexpected consequences. Several literary devices, including characters, satire, and diction, are applied to the plot of the short story in order to emphasize the primary theme. Throughout the ... The prominent choices of diction which appear on the first page of Twain's short story, some examples include, "lurking suspicion" and "he backed me into a corner and blockaded me with his chair.". The diction helps foreshadow the deception that occurs later on in the story; furthermore, the choice of diction suggests intelligence, which means that someone of higher intelligence is foreshadowed to try and deceive someone of lower intelligence despite the fact there are consequences. The dialogue of Smiley being accounted by Simon Wheezler, "he ketched a frog one day and took him home and said he cal'klated to edercate him" (Twain 3), contains diction that emphasizes the lack of a formal education. By using diction that suggests lack of intelligence and education, Twain is able to use the theme of deception ending with unexpected consequences to showcase that probability that people with lower intelligence have a hard time learning of their mistakes, especially when deceived. The final example of diction, "well I don't see no p'ints about that frog that's any better'n any other frog," (Twain 4), highlights another person with a lack of education, but this person has more intelligence or at least more awareness than the people Smiley usually tricks, which will eventually make it harder for Smiley to deceive him; thus, being unable to deceive him means ... • 59. Politics During The 1980 ' S Politics in the U.S. during the 1980's were exciting. Much like everything else during this decade, politics were changing and making a new way for economic development and social construct. Policy in the 1980's were both huge on foreign policy, and domestic development. The cold war, being the main concern with foreign policy, consisted of Communism versus Democracy, or Socialism versus Capitalism. President Reagan being the face of America and our Commander and Chief, created "Reaganomics," which fought for small Government, and utilized Government spending in a way that would effectively establish National Security as well as make a name for himself as being known as one of the most popular presidents in United State's history. Though these issues took place some thirty years ago, it is safe to say that the tribulations we faced as a nation in the eighties have directly affected society in 2015. I think that for most Conservatives and generally all Republicans revere Ronald Wilson Reagan as one of, if not the best President the United States has ever had. Reagan was born in February of 1911. He was originally an Actor starring in several films in the 1930s. One of these films being "Knute Rockne, All American" where Reagan played a character called "The Gipper" which would remain as his nickname during his political career and his life. • 61. Rhetorical Analysis Of Notre Dame It was a clear afternoon on November 10th, 1928 when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team took the field against the Black Knights of Army. Army was the number one team in the nation that year, and Notre Dame was having one of their worst seasons ever under the leadership of legendary coach Knute Rockne. At the end of the opening half, neither team had managed to score. With his dejected players gathered around him in the locker room, Rockne congratulates them on their performance in the first half and tells them, " I guess we just can't expect to win them all" (3). He then recalls what the great All–American running back George Gipp had told him as he laid dying in a hospital bed. What he said next would go down as one of the most famous motivational lines in sports history. Rockne describes how it was Gipp's final wish for a Notre Dame football team to, ". . . go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper" (5). Using this as a rallying cry, the Irish battled back in the second half and won 12–6. Rockne's use ethos, pathos, and logos successfully inspired his players to an upset victory and still motivates people to this day. The wording of the speech has a lot to do with the intended audience. Rockne is speaking to a bunch of young men, some of whom are barely more than boys. He doesn't use any complex words or phrases, which makes what he is saying easier to understand. That is the key to any good speech. It doesn't matter what you talk about if no one can understand what you are saying Although Rockne's speech is very brief, he manages to clearly establish his credibility, or ethos, on the topic of speaking about George Gipp. Rockne states, " None of you ever knew George Gipp. It was long before your time. But you all know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame" (4). Of all the people gathered in the room, he was the only one to personally know Gipp, as he was his football coach in the early 1920s and was present in the hospital when he died. He references Gipp's dying quote by stating, ". . . the last thing he said to me . . ."(5). By stating that he witnessed George Gipp's last words, Rockne early on establishes his credibility to the assembled players. By just barely stating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. The Real Issue Behind the Immigration Debate Essay example The controversy over immigration has typically overlooked the political purpose of immigration: to supply citizens who will cherish and uphold the American Founding principles of equality and liberty, of government by consent and the rule of law. Founding a new nation and then perpetuating it are the two greatest challenges of statesmen. Part of that task of perpetuation–and Abraham Lincoln reminded us that it can be a more difficult task than founding–is creating new citizens. In the United States this has involved turning immigrants into citizens. Thus, Jefferson, whose Declaration of Independence did more than any other document to make America a nation of immigrants, warned against accepting immigrants who would bring with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We hear two foreign languages in the film–a few words of Norwegian and the Latin of the Old Mass. Rockne was not just an All– American–that is, a star player–but he was a pure American, albeit an immigrant. And that would be the pattern for future Americans, drawn from other ethnic groups. Contrast this old movie with a new one–Bladerunner (1982), where the language, food, and people come from all over the world. It is almost impossible to tell who is human and who is artificial. In such a world, it might seem laughable to raise the question of who is an American. But in fact the challenge to the American Founding principle that all men are created equal makes us confront the question not only of human identity but of American identity. Some maintain that an openness to immigration outside Europe is a natural result of American ideals. They point to economic benefits of immigration, lowering the costs of labor. Imitating earlier patterns, such immigrants from Latin American or Asia would become as integrated into society as Irish, Italians, or eastern Europeans. But others maintain that the cultural differences of more recent immigration (since the 1965 liberalization), and adverse economic effects on lower–income Americans, tell against the new policy. Then follow the rancorous charges of racism, elitism, xenophobia, religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The invention of the forward pass and its official adoption in 1906 is proof positive that fundamentally the game has room to advance. "By all accounts, the forward pass was the invention that saved the game of football after a great rugby player from Yale in the 1880s, Walter Camp, pioneered rules changes that slowly transformed rugby into the new game of American Football." –Birth of Pro Football Player safety has been the catalyst for football evolution. A fact currently supported by the NFL's 1st and Future initiative dealing with this very topic and others. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell @nflcommish gets booed often but, in my opinion, he was right to legislate the violent hits out of the NFL.
