Pioneers had important jobs like doctors, storekeepers, and blacksmiths. They grew their own food and preserved it for winter like salt pork, potatoes, bread and dried apples. Pioneer schools were built by the community and taught by parents who were paid as teachers. Students followed strict lunchtime rules, often eating home-made bread, cold meat, eggs and fruit from the fields and orchards. Pioneer life required work from both children and parents to build homes, grow food and maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle on the frontier.
