This is the slide deck of my lightning talk at Alfresco Devcon 2019 in Edinburgh. The talk was held in a slot with 6 other presenters, and the recording should be available on YouTube sometime in February.
Moving Gigantic Files Into and Out of the Alfresco RepositoryJeff Potts
This talk is a technical case study showing show Metaversant solved a problem for one of their clients, Noble Research Institute. Researchers at Noble deal with very large files which are often difficult to move into and out of the Alfresco repository.
No Docker? No Problem: Automating installation and config with AnsibleJeff Potts
In this talk I show how to bring stability and repeatability to your Alfresco installation by automating install and config management with Ansible.
This talk was originally given at Alfresco DevCon 2020 (virtual edition).
Moving From Actions & Behaviors to MicroservicesJeff Potts
My DevCon 2019 talk discusses how to make it easier to integrate Alfresco with other systems using an event-based approach. Two real world examples are discussed and demonstrated. The first is about reporting against Alfresco metadata. The second is about enriching metadata by running content through a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model. Both solutions work by listening to generic events generated by Alfresco and placed on an Apache Kafka queue. For the reporting example, the Spring Boot consumer subscribes to Kafka events, then fetches metadata via CMIS and indexes that into Elasticsearch. For the NLP example, a separate Spring Boot consumer subscribes to the same events, but in this case, fetches the content, extracts text using Apache Tika, runs the text through Apache OpenNLP, then writes back extracted entities to Alfresco via CMIS. These are relatively simple examples, but illustrate how a de-coupled, asynchronous, event-based approach can make integrating Alfresco with other systems easier.
Infrastructure, use cases and performance considerations for
an Enterprise Grade ECM implementation up to 1B documents on AWS (Amazon Web Services EC2 and Aurora) based on the Alfresco (http://www.alfresco.com) Platform, leading Open Source Enterprise Content Management system.

CIRCUIT 2015 - AEM Infrastructure Automation with Chef CookbooksICF CIRCUIT
Drew Glass - Hero Digital
Push button deployments can automate AEM infrastructure to reduce costs and defects. Chef is a platform that enables this by transforming infrastructure into code using DevOps practices. AEM Author, Publish and Dispatcher instances can be fully configured and deployed as code with Chef. In this talk we will discuss how the open source AEM Chef Cookbook can be used to automate the deployment of AEM instances with Chef features like recipes, attributes, providers and resources. Out of the box, the AEM Chef Cookbook supports:
- Unattended installation of AEM Author, Publish, and Dispatcher nodes.
- Automatic search for and configuration of AEM cluster members using Chef searches.
- Configuration for replication agents using the replicator provider.
- Configurations for Dispatcher farms with the farm provider.
- Deploying and removing AEM packages with the package provider.
We will also discuss how AEM can be automated to supported different SSO and deployment scenarios like cold standby. Finally, we will cover how to extend the Cookbook to support your project specific needs.

This video is part of our talk about BOSH held by the CEO of anynines - Julian Fischer (Twitter: @fischerjulian) - at the SUSECON 2016 in Washington, D.C..
This presentation starts with an introduction to the rationale behind automated deployments in Continuous Delivery and DevOps. Then, I compare agent-based architectures, such as Chef and Puppet with the agentless architecture of the server orchestration engine Ansible. The presentation concludes with an automated deployment of Dynatrace into a simulated production environment.
Scaling Development Environments with DockerDocker, Inc.
We set out to solve the problems of quickly building high quality games for a fragmented mobile market. Taking advantage of HTML5 allowed a fast, familiar and highly iterative local development process, and a hybrid build process for native apps meant high performance games on mobile. Our product is designed to comprehensively handle complex UI flows, related server tasks as well as deep integrations with any social platform. This is necessarily complex piece of engineering, with dozens of large dependencies, and 5 local web servers powering a single user’s experience. When we set out to make this easily available to 3rd parties, we used Docker to solve to major challenges: 1) Fitting many users, each with a unique development environment, on to one machine; 2) Managing all of these development environments in a scalable way.
Docker at Shopify: From This-Looks-Fun to Production by Simon Eskildsen (Shop...Docker, Inc.
Since July 2014 Shopify's been serving thousands of requests per second of production web traffic from Docker containers. This was an 8 month effort, with multiple pivots of direction from the team—and we're only getting started. This talk covers the lessons learned through the trial and error of an in-flight architecture redesign, spanning hundreds of hosts, as well as the technical vision of the future of our platform.
Handling 10k requests per second with Symfony and Varnish - SymfonyCon Berlin...Alexander Lisachenko
It is believed that the Symfony framework is quite heavy and it can be difficult to develop a website that will be able to work under the high load. It is true, but does this mean that it is impossible to implement a dynamic caching and to update only a small part of entire page as data is updated? This talk will give your an answer to that. It is Varnish, ESI-blocks and load balancing. With hundreds of thousands of unique visitors and million hits a day, we continue to use Symfony, and do not see any problems.
All the troubles you get into when setting up a production ready Kubernetes c...Jimmy Lu
Have you ever try to set up a Kubernetes cluster manually by your own? It may be a small dish to you to set one up on your laptop. However, things are getting harder and harder once you have more nodes to handle, not to mention you also want security, monitoring, auto-scaling, and federated cluster enabled in the production environments. With more features added, the situation gets even worse and more complicated. We developers in Linker Networks had put in a tremendous amount of time in investigating on how to set up Kubernetes clusters efficiently. We designed and built our own tools to automate and facilitate such the painful processes. In this talk, I'll go through all the details and pitfalls in setting up a production ready cluster. Hopefully, the experience I shared could keep you out of these troubles, saving your precious time.

Migrating to a bazel based CI system: 6 learnings Or Shachar
Two years ago, we were given a big challenge - Transform Wix Build System, then based on Maven and Teamcity, to a new system that will support our exponentially growing scale.
But, how could we move to a system so different in so many ways than the existing one? Furthermore, we were required not to break the current build system, as we migrate to the new one.
Fast forward to today: Wix backend CI system is fully migrated to Bazel! The system builds in a fracture of the time - even with our largest codebases. In this talk, we will describe how we achieved this, why it took us so long, what tools we had to build on the way (and what we already have, and will, open source!), and share the principles that helped us.

So. many. vulnerabilities. Why are containers such a mess and what to do abou...Eric Smalling
What’s with all of these container image vulnerabilities? I’m a developer, not a security analyst! Whether you’re a solo dev or a large team embracing DevSecOps, join me to learn practices I’ve seen successful teams using to build safer container images & avoid the mistakes they made along the way.
If you’ve even run a vulnerability scan on a container you’ve probably seen it: the dreaded list with 100s, maybe even 1000s of issues on it. Containers have made life simpler in so many ways, but security sometimes doesn’t feel like one of them. So what can we do about it?
In this talk, I’ll share what I’ve learned working with users and companies and the best practices I’ve picked up along the way to builds safer container images. I’ll also share what not to do, because there are many rabbit holes you can go down that end up wasting time and energy.
I’ll share the processes and patterns that you can use whether you’re working on an individual project, or you’re part of a bigger team embracing DevSecOps.

Cloud meets Fog & Puppet A Story of Version Controlled InfrastructureHabeeb Rahman
Talk at rootconf - A conference at Bangalore for sysadmins.
Gist of the talk:-
Puppet is a great configuration management tool and git is great at version controlling.AWS lets you create instances in few clicks. But when it comes to large deployments only automation(where tools come together) can make you productive and happy. I will take you through following.. Fog - The Ruby cloud services library and how it helps you to create vendor neutral cloud deployments, Puppet- Multi region puppet masters, Ruby- How Ruby pulls the strings together in EC2/ELB/RDS creation, Security group creation, IP authorization, Route53 DNS etc, Git- how we use git to version control deployment configs/configurations.
A Post-Apocalyptic sun.misc.Unsafe World by Christoph engelbertJ On The Beach
The announcement that sun.misc.Unsafe will disappear in Java 9 created a huge buzz in the community and lots of people didnt agree with the idea. While Unsafe have to go away eventually the time in not yet and Oracle finally agreed on that. To replace sun.misc.Unsafe we need a clear set of APIs to achieve the same behavior and performance. VarHandle, Foreign Function Calls, Generic Specialization (Templates) and other proposals try to solve this misery and to replace certain aspects of our beloved class. This talk will introduce the alternatives and explain how and why they will help to replace sun.misc.Unsafe. It uses basic examples to demonstrate what a Post-Apocalyptic Unsafe World will look like.

SOCRadar Research Team: Latest Activities of IntelBrokerSOCRadar
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. To track such hacker activities on dark web sources like hacker forums, private Telegram channels, and other hidden platforms where cyber threats often originate, you can check SOCRadar’s Dark Web News.

Innovating Inference - Remote Triggering of Large Language Models on HPC Clus...Globus
Large Language Models (LLMs) are currently the center of attention in the tech world, particularly for their potential to advance research. In this presentation, we'll explore a straightforward and effective method for quickly initiating inference runs on supercomputers using the vLLM tool with Globus Compute, specifically on the Polaris system at ALCF. We'll begin by briefly discussing the popularity and applications of LLMs in various fields. Following this, we will introduce the vLLM tool, and explain how it integrates with Globus Compute to efficiently manage LLM operations on Polaris. Attendees will learn the practical aspects of setting up and remotely triggering LLMs from local machines, focusing on ease of use and efficiency. This talk is ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to leverage the power of LLMs in their work, offering a clear guide to harnessing supercomputing resources for quick and effective LLM inference.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
