the film industry in 1920. By 1926 he made his first thriller
‘The Lodger’
• He left for Hollywood in 1939, where his first American
film, Rebecca, won an Academy Award for best picture.
• Created more than 50 films.
• By the age of 20, Hitchcock became a title card
designer at a movie studio and worked his way up to be

• Vertigo
• Rear Window
• The Man Who Knew Too Much
• North by Northwest
• Strangers on a train
• Notorious
• Rebecca
• Dial M for Murder
• The 39 Steps
Psycho Analysis
• Although the opening scene does not show many typical Thriller
conventions, some are still notable.
• Instantly we can hear fast, dramatic music playing during the title
sequence, this creates tension and puts the audience on edge.
Throughout the title sequence, grey bars shoot across the screen
in the transition between names, this creates the image of being
imprisoned in jail which could foreshadow that there may be
violence and crime in the film.
• The film starts off with a high angled astablishing shot of the
location the film will take place in. This is important as it shows the
audience where they are and gives them some knowledge on
what environments the characters live in.
• Throughout the scene in the bedroom, the camera angles such
as the high angles create the feeling that we are spying on the
couple. This creates tension as we start to wonder whether we
are actually watching a point of view shot. Also, the way we
enter the room (through the window) is very effective as it
creates more of an image of spying.
