This document discusses methods for delineating Zones of Critical Concern (ZCC) and Zones of Peripheral Concern (ZPC) around drinking water intakes using real-time water flow modeling. The modeling estimates travel times using maximum velocity equations calibrated for different regions, with ZCC delineated at 5 hours above intakes and ZPC at 10 hours. To date, the modeling has delineated ZCCs and ZPCs for 151 intake sites, following buffers of 1,000 feet for mainstem rivers and 500 feet for tributaries. The modeling is limited by using only three streamflow regions and not accounting for chemical dispersion, but provides a conservative first-pass approach to delineating protection zones until further calibration
