5.  Causal organism- Fusarium oxysporum
 Symptoms-
 Yellowing of lower leaves
 Yellowish to reddish streaks are noted with intensification of colour towards
the rhizome
 Management-
 Severely affected plants should be uprooted and burnt
 Highly infected soil should not be replanted at least 3-4 years
 Use disease free planting material
 Growing of paddy followed by banana for 3-5 years

6. LEAF SPOT

7.  Causal organism- Mycosphaerella musicola
 Symptoms-
 Early symptoms appear on the third or fourth leaf from the top,
i.e.on young leaves.
 Small spindle shaped spots on foliage with greyish centre and
yellowish halo running parallel to veins.
 management
 Improved drainage, control of weeds, removal of diseased suckers
 Foliar spray of copper oxychloride 1g/lit. of water

8. ANTHRACNOSE

9.  Causal organism- Gloeosporium musae
 Symptoms-
 At the initial stage, small, circular, black spots develop on the
affected fruits. Then these spots enlarge in size, turn to brown
colour
 The skin of the fruit turns black and shrivels and becomes covered
with characteristic pink acervuli. Finally the whole finger is affected.
Later the disease spreads and affects the whole bunch.
 Sometimes the main stalk of the bunch may become diseased.
Infected fruits become black and rotten
 Management
 Spraying of chlorothanlonil (0.2%) and bavistin (1%) four times at
15days interval is recommended
 Proper sanitization

10. CIGAR END TIP ROT

11.  Causal organism- Verticillium theobromae
 Symptoms
 A black necrosis spread from the perianth into the tip of immature
fingers.
 The pulp of the infected fruit undergoes a dry rot, which spreads
from the tip and such fingers are readily rejected in the market.
 If emerging fingers are affected, the entire fingers sometimes get
rotten.
 Management
 Use disease free and healthy planting materials
 Field sanitation, such as the removal of dead, hanging leaves from
plants, reduces inoculum level.
 Bagging of maturing banana stems.
 Remove the untransformed flowers after the finger emergence

13.  Causal organism- Couetotrichum musae
 Symptoms
 blackening of crown of the tissues which spread to pulp through the
pedicel resulting rotting of the infected portion and separation of
fingers from the head
 Management-
 Dipping the bunches or hands in the thiobendazole or benomyl or
using fungicide impregnated cellulose pad packing is recommended

15.  Causal organism- Thielaviopsis paradoxa
 Symptoms-
 The fungus enters through the cut stem
 The invaded flesh becomes soft and water soaked
 Management
 Minimising brushing
 Prompt cooling to 14℃
 Proper sanitization of handling

16. BACTERIAL WILT

17.  Causal organism- Pseudomonas solanacearum
 Symptoms-
 Leaves become yellow and progress upwards. The petiole breaks
and leaves hang.
 When it is cut open discolouration in vascular region with pale yellow
to dark brown colour.
 The discolouration is in the central portion of the corm.
 Internal rot of fruits with dark brown discoloration.
 When the pseudo stem is cut transversely bacterial ooze can be
seen.
 Management-
 Tools used for pruning and cutting should be disinfected with
formaldehyde

18. BANANA BUNCHY TOP VIRUS

19.  Causal organism- Banana bunchy top virus
 Symptoms-
 Prominent dark green streaks on the petioles and midrib along the
leaf veins.
 Marginal chlorosis and curling of leaves
 Petioles fail to elongate
 Leaves are reduced in size, chlorotic, stand upright and become
brittle and are crowded at the top (Bunchy top) and shoe dark green
streaks with ‘J hook’ shape near the midrib.
 Plants show marked stunting
 Management-
 Eradication of diseased plants, suckers
 Planting material should be free from disease
 Foliar spray of metasystox on affected plant

21.  Causal organism- Banana streak virus
 Symptoms
 A prominent symptom exhibited by BSV is yellow streaking of the
leaves, which becomes progressively necrotic producing a black
streaked appearance in older leave
 Management
 Use of clean planting material
 Eradication of infected plant material
 Control of vectors

22. BANANA BRACT MOSAIS VIRUS

23.  Causal organism- Banana bract mosaic virus
 Symptoms-
 The disease is characterized by the presence of spindle shaped
pinkish to reddish streaks on pseudo stem, midrib and peduncle
 Typical mosaic and spindle shaped mild mosaic streaks on bracts,
peduncle and fingers also observed
 Suckers exhibit unusual reddish brown streaks at emergence and
separation of leaf sheath from central axis
 Management
 Suckers from infected plant should not be used
 Weeds near by plant area should be removed
