Air pollution occurs when gases, dust, fumes or odors exceed safe limits in the air. There are two main types - outdoor pollution which includes smog, particulates and acid rain, and indoor pollution. Air pollution can come from natural sources like wildfires or human sources like vehicles, power plants and burning wood. Major pollutants are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. The effects of air pollution include human health issues and environmental damage such as acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion and wildlife/crop damage. Some ways to prevent air pollution are saving energy, minimizing smoke emissions, recycling materials, using public transportation, regular vehicle maintenance and choosing environmentally friendly products and appliances.
