Product lifecycle and information management in the food industry has become increasingly complex. Consider the example of a single pepperoni frozen pizza. Product information includes tracking nutritional information, packaging and labeling, suppliers and pricing of all of the ingredients, and the recipe. Some of the variables, such as ingredient pricing, can change over time, so the impacts on the product need to be calculated. All of these moving parts are typically managed by spreadsheets, which are far too time consuming.
Vif, a software and services vendor that is specialized in the food industry, has developed a solution based on the Nuxeo Platform, consisting of two modules that sit on the same content repository: Product Information Management and Product Lifecycle Management. Although clients can use only a single module, they usually combine both modules: PLIM.
VIF PIM is a product repository that provides centralized access to up-to-date data that is validated by all departments.VIF PLM enables tracking of all stages of the design of a new product, with functions for managing formulations, cost simulations, nutritional calculations, allergen management and the list of ingredients in a recipe.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

For massive graphs that fit in RAM, but not in GPU memory, it is possible to take
advantage of a shared memory system with multiple CPUs, each with multiple cores, to
accelerate pagerank computation. If the NUMA architecture of the system is properly taken
into account with good vertex partitioning, the speedup can be significant. To take steps in
this direction, experiments are conducted to implement pagerank in OpenMP using two
different approaches, uniform and hybrid. The uniform approach runs all primitives required
for pagerank in OpenMP mode (with multiple threads). On the other hand, the hybrid
approach runs certain primitives in sequential mode (i.e., sumAt, multiply).

3. The issue
• According to WHO foodborne & waterborne
diseases kill an estimated 2.2M people annually,
most of whom are children
• In Europe 1.2M cases of foodborne diseases are
reported annually, that lead to 350,000
hospitalisation and 5,000 deaths
• The foodborne diseases problem is not focused at
the national level but also at international level as
outbreaks, involving multiple countries are becoming
more common with the ever-increasing global
movement of food and people
4. The issue
• The early detection of the outbreaks and the
extraction of conclusions from the analysis of the
alerts has become a major challenge in the area
• Currently, decision makers both at the public and
private sector, food scientists, microbiologists and
epidemiologists that work on food safety topics
cannot take full advantage of all the existing data
for foodborne diseases mainly for two reasons
– part of the information remains unstructured and still
closed in internal databases and
– the information is stored in custom and non-standard
schemas and thus it is not shared globally in an
interoperable way.
