Designing the city as interface & the interface to the city

Due to population growth in cities around the world, their infrastructure and services are challenged to keep up with the growing demand. At the same time the availability of new technologies and their appropriation by citizens leads to certain expectations and new challenges regarding the interaction design of interfaces and their use in the city. By designing for new experiences using the city as interface, and by better understanding how to design interfaces to the city that follow new interaction models, some of the issues in contemporary cities can potentially be addressed, alleviating pressure on ageing infrastructures and services. These are the slides for a talk I gave at the IxDA Sydney chapter meetup on 23 January 2014. The key take away are a set of design parameters for urban interaction design: scale, interaction models, users, and research & prototyping. There is not much text on the slides, but most of the slides include references to further information about the examples that are included in this slide deck.

When I was a teenager, I spent my monthly allowance visiting this basement shop in a London Alley near Oxford Street … at the time, it was the only place in the whole of the UK to buy *really* cutting-edge European Death Metal music. Technology has changed our world so much over the last two decades that my youth seems like ancient history; but over the next two decades, the changes that will become possible as technology develops will be even more striking; and it may even be hard to recognise the way that we interact with our future world as "human behaviour" as we understand it now. As consumer technologies such as social media, open data and smartphones evolve through the next-generation of "human/computer interfaces", the incredible power of future technology will be put into the hands of individuals and small businesses. By opening up cities' digital infrastructure to them, business and government can help people and cities to help themselves.

This talk will cover * Principles of network analysis. * Using tools like CVSAnalY, mlstats and others to pull data from your community and store it in a database. * Running basic queries to extract the data needed for network analysis. * Demonstrate techniques for doing network analysis. * Show examples of visualizations. Academic Libraries as Makerspace: 3D Printing and Knowledge Creation

As part of an ongoing plan to transform an underutilized science and engineering library into a lively incubator for student-faculty collaboration and innovation, staff at the University of Nevada, Reno decided to launch a bold initiative: build a 3D scanning and printing “makerspace” and make it available to the entire campus. The service has been wildly successful with 3D printers running 24 hours a day. Furthermore, positioning the library as a place that facilitates knowledge creation beyond text based tools and resources has been a game changer. Students are highly motivated to learn new skills in order to take advantage of new technologies (Lynda.com gets heavy use); they experiment and iterate quickly to perfect their designs. Even better, students from engineering are now rubbing elbows with people from fields such as biology, computer science, geology, and even art. Like the printing press and the personal computer, 3-D printers have been hailed as a revolutionary device that will ultimately transform the way the world operates.

We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup.
