This document provides background and information on the Armed Forces Tribunal of India. It discusses Supreme Court rulings that found military personnel need the right to appeal court martial convictions. The Armed Forces Tribunal Act was subsequently passed in 2007 to establish the AFT, with benches across India, to adjudicate service matters and hear appeals of court martial sentences. The AFT has original and appellate jurisdiction. It was created to provide a judicial forum for military disputes and replace the limitations of court martials and writ courts. It hears a wide range of service matters except postings and transfers or cases with minor punishments. The AFT follows civil court procedures and members include judicial and administrative personnel.
