Editor's Notes
All of the debate about which helicopter is best at CSAR is really a debate over who is the best “second choice,” because the V-22 is the best CSAR platform available for a number of reasons:
Allows the Rescue Package to integrate with the Strike Package
Reduces time to pickup, optimizing the direct correlation between elapsed time and probability of mission success.
Allows the exploitation of hours of darkness at greater ranges from the pickup point (mission completion in one period of darkness).
Desert Storm experiences showed that all of the immediate captures occurred during daylight hours. Isolated personnel were able to evade for at least 2 hours at night.
Expands the "Golden Hour" for MedEvac
Reduces the probability of detection, acquisition, and engagement by enemy forces, thus improving aircraft survivability
Allows the warfighter to quickly compensate for "the Fog of War" (human errors/enroute flight path changes/threat changes/pickup point changes)
Tiltrotors are more than simply "Twice as Fast," they provide Tactical, Operational and Strategic Flexibility
