In the 11th century, the Archbishop of Santiago and the King of Castille exchanged lands that now form the municipality of A Estrada. Since the 12th century, these lands were politically divided under different jurisdictions ruled by noblemen or the Archbishop. In 1837, all the jurisdictions were united under the single municipality of A Estrada. A Estrada is home to two famous festivals - the Festival of Salmon fishing and the Rapa das Bestas horse festival, which was declared a festival of touristic interest by UNESCO and originates from taming wild horses.
