3. A Brief History of Cartography
• These maps were inaccurate mainly:
– Majority of cartographers were mapping from
second hand information from explorers notes
or descriptions
– Or from the rocking decks of ships
– Instrumentation was in its infancy
– Unable to access large areas of land due to
poor road infrastructure.
5. Data Capture - Flight Plan
• The Flight Plan instructs the pilot, where to fly
(flight lines over the project area)
• It details GPS co-ordinates for each camera
event (shutter opening)
• Before GPS flight lines would have been
marked on a paper map and the pilot would
have followed instructions from the navigator
• The camera operator used a ‘bomb sight’
attached to the camera to collect the
photography
