Editor's Notes

  • #3 Prompt: Share your thoughts on the current state of affairs.
  • #6 With public sentiment that’s broadly supportive of arts and culture, and public officials that seem receptive to development of art and culture public policy, the environment is quite ripe for advancement of an arts and cultural agenda that ties to a broader civic agenda. So, I’d like to take some time to dig into the concept of advocacy strategies and tactics, and we’ll explore them through the following themes: What can nonprofits do? Building Internal Advocacy Structures Building Relationships with Policymakers Ongoing Communications
  • #7 Federal laws encourage charities to lobby within certain specified limits. Knowing what constitutes lobbying under the law and what the legal limits are is the key to being able to lobby legally and safely. Carrying on propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation may not constitute a “substantial part” of the activities of an organization exempt under Section 501(c)(3); exceeding the “substantial part” limit places an organization at risk of losing its exempt status.

  • #9 Prompt: Who makes policy in Cuyahoga County? Who makes policy that affects the arts? Many bodies make policy that affect the arts. Know them and follow them.
  • #10 It provides evidence for policy decisions. Don’t go overboard though…A few good data points that reinforce your message is much better than a lot of data that doesn’t directly advance your cause. Share the story of Remix Cleveland and it’s impact on the admissions tax dialogue and passage.
  • #11 What is advocacy? Educating and creating awareness about issues affecting the community and ensuring public policy addresses them. What is lobbying? A smaller subset of overall advocacy work. Attempts to influence specific legislation.
