2. The Candles There are five candles on the wreath. There are 4 colored candles on the Advent wreath ( the thing the candles are put on) and one white candle in the middle. The four candles mean hope, peace, joy, and love. There are four weeks in Advent (Christmas). Advent starts on the 4 th Sunday before Christmas. Every week on Sunday you light 1 candle. The middle candle is lit on Christmas day.

3. History Advent started about 1,600 years ago. For some reason they celebrated Jesus’ birthday in the year 400 and made the holiday. Each candle that represents 1 week actually is 1000 years. It was said that 4000 years ago Adam and Eve were born, so every week is 1000 years.

4. The Advent Calendar The Advent calendar is a calendar used for counting the days of Advent instead of using a regular calendar. There are 10-13 Advent calendars that have been made (10-14 because some have gone out of use). The Advent calendar was made by a few people in the mid and late 1800s, but they finally published and had the in stores in the early 1900s. The last kind of known Advent calendar was made in the 1970s and the earliest was in the 1920s.
