Sleep is an active state of unconsciousness where the brain and body functions continue. There are five phases of sleep that allow the body to feel rested, learn, strengthen the heart, release hormones, and fight sickness. The amount of sleep needed varies by age, from 16-18 hours for newborns to 7-8 hours for adults, and not getting enough sleep can negatively impact mood and increase health risks like high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

5. Depending on the age we must sleep:
• Newborns: 16-18 hours a day
• Preschool children: 11-12 hours a day
• School-age children: at least 10 hours a day
• Adolescents: 9-10 hours a day
• Adults (including older adults): 7-8 hours a day

7. Sleep deprivation can also affect your mood, causing:
• Irritability
• Relationship problems, especially for children and teens
• Depression
• Anxiety

9. It can also affect your physical health. Studies show that not getting
enough or poor sleep increases the risk of:
• High blood pressure
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Kidney disease
• Obesity
• Type 2 diabetes
