1. Adaptation
Adaptation- A trait that helps a species survive and reproduce.
3 types of adaptations:
1. Structural adaptation- a body part or coloring that aids survival
Examples: 2 types of camouflage:
protective coloration-A type of camouflage that enables organisms to
blend in with their surroundings by matching a color or pattern of their
background. E.g. a chameleon
protective resemblance- a type of camouflage where an organism
matches an object in its background. E.g. a stick caterpillar
Other examples of structural adaptations- hooves of horses, shell of a
turtle, spines of a cactus, thorns of a rose, feathers of birds, brightly
colored fish
2. Physiological adaptation- jobs of body parts controlling life processes that
aid survival.
Examples: seals can hold their breath for over 30 minutes while they hunt
for food, saltbrush grows in very salty soil that would poison many other plants
3. Behavioral adaptation- all the actions of an organism.
Examples: learned behaviors- walking, talking, riding a bike
Instincts- (things you are born knowing), like animals howling or puffer
fish puffing up as a protective response
Other examples: fight or flight response, mating rituals
