Developing the Next Generation Embedded HMIs – Phil Burr
With more and more people using smartphones it is no surprise that more and more people are demanding better HMIs in other products: whether it is in their set top box, refrigerator, or car, users have come to expect graphically rich dynamic HMIs. This is all very well, but what is a humble developer to do when confronted with the constraints of their embedded device. This presentation examines the options for embedded developers needing to implement these latest HMIs and looks at tools and techniques which can help developers meet or exceed their customer’s HMI expectations.

The FI-WARE project aims to build a common core platform for the future internet. It will develop a set of generic enablers that provide common functions around connectivity, data management, cloud hosting and more. These generic enablers will be open specifications that can have multiple compliant implementations. The platform will support the needs of app developers by enabling connections to physical systems, managing large data at scale, and ensuring privacy, security and trust. It will include a testbed and open innovation lab for validating apps built on the platform. The project has 26 partners and a budget of 66.4 million euros over three years to create a standardized, open and future-proof foundation for innovation.

For the first time, Marketers have the ability to collect and measure almost any data imaginable. As a result, too many of us find ourselves violating Robert McNamara’s maxim – we try to make what’s measurable important, vs. making the important measurable. How do we reach that elusive Goldilocks state of measuring not too much, not too little, but just the right things? Start with the executive management team. What metrics are they using to run the business, and how can you help?
This session will review real dashboards and reports you can use to communicate to stakeholders in sales and finance, inform long-term plans, and continually optimize execution. The result? Marketing’s credibility increases, your forecasts become more accurate even than those of Sales, and you assume your rightful place as indispensable consigliore to your C-levels.
Husco International implemented a business intelligence (BI) solution to provide a single version of the truth across their global operations and drive better decisions. They evaluated Actuate and Oracle BI and selected Actuate for its user self-service capabilities. Early benefits included reduced inventory levels and costs as users trusted the consolidated data. While culture change took time, users eventually relied on the consistent BI data over assembling information in spreadsheets. Lessons learned included starting small, leveraging professional services, and taking a phased approach to the implementation.
The document discusses how Utah's Division of Facilities and Construction Management uses open source business intelligence (BI) through Actuate BIRT to provide reports and analytics to both internal and external customers. It manages over 3,400 buildings totaling over 52 million square feet of space. It chose BIRT for its independence, public access, integration capabilities, and low costs. Sample reports shown include those for project managers, facilities information, and emergency plans. The division is working on mobile initiatives and dashboards to provide more reporting in the field.
This document discusses FirstBank's selection of a business intelligence (BI) platform. It describes FirstBank's goals of consolidating multiple BI systems onto a single platform to streamline development, reduce maintenance costs, and improve report performance. The document outlines FirstBank's evaluation and selection process, in which they tested Actuate and MicroStrategy and ultimately chose Actuate due to its scalability, performance, and support for Java and web services. Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
