This document describes five activities from edchange.org for building cultural competence in classrooms presented by Paul C. Gorski. The activities are:
1. A "respect" activity where students introduce themselves and discuss what respect means. This allows students to build community and reflect on cultural assumptions around respect.
2. A "knowing the community" activity where students share their names, backgrounds and traditions. This helps students learn about each other and find commonalities across differences.
3. A "who am I poem" activity where students write short poems with each line beginning "I am". This encourages self-reflection and opportunities for connections.
4. An "inclusion/exclusion" activity
