Editor's Notes

  • #2 What’s Your Story: An introduction to Crafting Scenes by Karl Malmberg
  • #3 So just what is a scene?
  • #4 A scene is a unit of conflict lived through by the point of view character
  • #5 But a dictionary definition still doesn’t tell us how to write a scene.
  • #6 Conflict may be external such as two people fighting or having an argument
  • #7 Or, conflict may be internal such as someone torn between two conflicting thoughts.
  • #8 But in order to actually write a scene we need to know what it’s made of
  • #9 A working scene consists of 4 elements
  • #10 A want: A want can be a person, place, or thing that the character wants
  • #11 An obstacle: An obstacle can be an external person or thing, or an internal thought or feeling that prevents the character from getting what they want
  • #12 An action: An action is what the character does about it, and how they do reveals what kind of character they are.
  • #13 A Resolution: A resolution is the end result of the scene, and it may be win, lose, or mixed victory.
  • #43 Thank you for watching. This concludes the how to write a scene presentation.
